Hello All,
My name is Mike Scholl and as of few days ago I finally became a POG member.I have many reasons for wanting to belong to this group and for some reason I never took the steps to join. One of the main reasons is the fact that my parents Tom and Judy Scholl owned and operated a Penton,Husqvarna,Rokon,Herculees Dealership in the small town of Lithopolis,Ohio which was just ten minutes southeast of Columbus,Ohio The name of the buisness was J&J Cycle Sales. The dealership lasted over eleven years and was very successful. In the beginning my uncle Jim Fogle was part of the buisness but he soon became a Factory Rokon ISDT rider and Rep for the company. I still have the picture of my father and uncle Jim standing behind a 125 Six Days shaking John Pentons hand when they became a Penton dealer. In 1974 the buisness was recognized for its sales in both Penton and Husqvarna motorcycles and rewarded with a trip to the ISDT in Italy and then on to Sweden for tour of the Husqvarna factory. My own personal goal now is to restore my Berkshire 100 that was originally sold thru the buisness and now I own! Hi Jeff,
I actually have contacted uncle Jim and offered my modern KTM for him to ride,he also said that Jim Simmons might come also, but he is not riding.I also met you in 2002 at the Reunion Ride,I was the "Big Guy" on the Husky that you rode with on day two.

Well Mike, there's 3 stories that stick in my mind.
1. How about while riding the Enduro Riders vintage Enduro, you left a reset on time, then literally went around the corner, and timed yourself into a checkpoint...LATE !!
2. Then there was the time at a Hocking Valley Motorcycle Club event, instead of using arrows, you marked part of the course with pictures from magazines. (No comment on the type of magazines that were used - just that NO ONE got lost in that section!)
3. But I think everyone would like to hear why you showed up at a race wearing a dress, blonde wig, and fake boobs.
All joking aside, Mike is one of the nicest guys you'll meet. Always smiling, and always welcome to help out. Mike is also a very good rider, and always a threat for the win anytime he's sitting on the starting line.
I was young when J&J Cycle Sales was in business, but I can still remember the infamous yellow J&J van that was always at the races. Just like Mike, his Dad was always smiling, and willing to give a helping hand.

Mike Scholl (31J, above) and Dave Lamberth (33J, below) took the Vintage and Post-Vintage wins, respectively, to cap off a picture-perfect day of racing at AHRMA's Ohio round of the Penton Owner's Group Cross Country Series in Windham, Ohio.

1. This would be a "DA"attack and the fact that I was using Dads old railroad pocket watch in a Bullseye holder,Dad had the hour hand removed from the watch, so all I had was the minute & second hands,and it rotated on me!
2. The correct answer is: I ran out of arrows to hang!
3. If you cant beat em' Ride the Powder Puff Class! or just dress up as the Budwieser Ugly Women,receive "Free Beer" and star in the Mud-Sweat-Gears Video!

My Dad is on the left and my Uncle Jim is shaking John's hand,I have been trying to find out what the tie tacks that their wearing are? I recall when I would go with Dad to pick up bikes,oil, accessories, that the building or atleast one of the buildings that this picture was taken in was a Roller Skating Rink(Ring).

That picture was taken on Monday Febrary 12, 1973 during the morning session of the first day of Penton Dealer School. The picture that I have shows a road weary guy in a flannel shirt shaking John's hand in basically the same pose, I think the guy in the flannel shirt probably was in need of a good shower...after a rather busy 24 hours. I will explain below....
And yes the building was formerly a roller rink, here is a picture of it taken at the POG 40/10 event last year.

I think the tie tacks that you asked about are buttons that say "Penton Built For Champions" on them.
If you bore easily turn channels now as I have been thinking about this all day after seeing Mike's picture this morning. The Little Harpeth National Enduro was run the day before dealer school in the Nashville, area. I had talked a high school buddy by the name of Ed Ferree into riding the national with me, he had a Penton Berkshire at the time. Ed is an entire story in himself and I will address him a bit later. Ed's Dad had done well in business and Ed had use of his families motorhome and enclosed trailer, plus a company gas card, obviously a good choice for a riding and traveling buddy..
We entered the event and rode together on the same minute, at one point we came to a long powerline section where you could see about a mile ahead from the plateau that we were on to another plateau at the far end of the section. Down below we could see riders working the trail going through a creek and slowly getting smaller as they became farther away, it was a pretty neat view. Ed said for me to lead so off I went making my way through the slightly technical section of trail, at the other end the trail rose rather sharply onto the plateau, as I gassed my Six-Day and climbed the grade I did a double take as I saw Ed sitting there waiting for me. I stopped beside him and asked him where he had passed me at because I thought I was running pretty good and I sure didn't see him go by, in normal Ed fashion he laughed out loud and said I was crazy to ride through all of that mud and water when there was a nice gravel road just off to the right of the trail about a hundred yards.....we both sat there and laughed for awhile at that one.
At the end of the enduro Jack asked if I was staying around for the results and trophy presentation, he said that he and the rest of the Penton guys from Amherst had to get going and get things ready for dealer school the next morning and asked if I would pick up their awards and deliver them to Amherst, obviously I agreed to do so, with great pride I must admit. I picked up their awards along with the silver tray that I had won, when I got back to the motor home Ed was already showered and in bed, he had hurt his ankle and was in need of some rest.
I drove into the night and was determined to not miss one minute of dealer school the next morning. Ed woke up several times during the night, mostly at gas stops, I asked if he was ready to drive to which he would answer that I ought to park and get some sleep like he was doing. I would mention about Dealer School and his answer was for me to keep driving if I wanted to get there so bad, his ankle was hurting and he was going to sleep. So keep driving I did, making Lorain just in time for the start of Dealer School, but a bit weary and as I said before, needing a shower.
I am not ashamed to say that I was very proud to walk in and have Jack and John come over to see what all I had hauled back from Nashville, next thing I knew John said for me and my local dealer to stand and get our picture taken with him behind a brand new CMF 125, behind us was a map of the Untied States with pins showing the location of Penton dealers, the same pose that is shown in Mike's picture...
Ed went on to race Jeeps and I stayed with the motorcycles, we decided one time to try our luck together in a Jeep at the Baja and decided to fly out check out the event. His dad sponsored our trip and we had a great time in our rented Chevy Luv truck checking out the event. We soon realized that for us to actually put together an entry was more than we really wanted to get into. Ed later got into stock car racing and eventually put together a NASCAR team and drove in the Busch Series for a time. I think he eventually put Shawna Robinson in the car. If any of you guys follow dirt racing or were into the Busch series stuff a few years back you might know Ed, he is a first class guy and I think his ankle still hurts him once in awhile.
Thanks Mike for posting your picture and allowing me to enjoy some fond memories all day long as I thought about all this stuff. Sorry to ramble..but I warned ya...

Thats amazing, I met Ed a few years back racing Dirt late models at Pennsylvania Motor speedway Just outside of Pittsburgh. I think he was building and selling Quik change rearends for the LMs. He was hard to beat there and at Challenger Speedway.

No, I wasn't in on the racing inside the building. Jack usually tells that story, I don't know if Dane was in on that or not, maybe he will chime in.
Do you remember the names of all the guys in your race team photo?
I see your Dad, is Jim behind the Rokon? Do you still have the shop sign ? I love old shop signs, fortunately I have been able to snag a few.

Starting from the left, Ronnie Smith is behind the Rokon,He and Uncle Jim always battled each other for the win in Disrict 11 Enduros. If im not mistaken I believe Ronnie won a Stone Mountain National Enduro? Ronnie's son still races Enduros,HS,GNCC. Then Dad,What more can I say about him! A Legend & Hero in my mind! Next is Danny James,He would race everywhere! and often on a different make & model,Penton/KTM,Husky,Rokon. Then the last one is Berman "The Glassman" Thompson. He was are Senior rider that could whip most of the young pups! Missing from the picture was Larry Taylor,he rode the wheels off a 125 Six Days. There are several pictures of him in the Penton Photos! Uncle Jim was already riding for Rokon and was not in town when the picture was taken. As for the sign,the one that is in the picture, I have it, along with some other goodies that came from the shop.

Paul and Mike, some great photos and history. We sure were lucky to grow up in that era of motorcycling, weren't we. Mike, I remember you on your Husky now. You definitely know how to move it quickly down the trail! Keep talking up the Reunion to your Uncle Jim. If you have a current email address for him, shoot it to me off line at

Jim Simmons has been to several of the Reunions. All those guys are my heroes from 1973!

The picture of your race team is awesome, it tells so much about that era, thanks for posting it. Just look at the differences in the machinery, in my opinion that era was truly the golden era of dirt bike riding and racing with the constant development and introduction of truly significant changes in the bikes. I can remember sitting along a trail in those days and being able to tell what make of bike was coming towards us just by the sound, maybe its just me but I couldn't do that today.
That picture reminds me of one of the great things about the ISDTRR, seeing all of those various machines at work in their element. I always enjoy the time we get to spend at the checkpoints out on the trails, it is like a traveling museum display.
Is that a 125 Husky in the picture? If so John Penton always says that if Husky would have built a 125 when he asked them to that the Penton never would have come into existence.

Hi Paul,
To answer your question,yes that is a 1974 Husqvarna 125 CR. I am very thankful that they did not have a "race" version in the late sixties otherwise as you said there might not have been a Penton motorcycle developed. Mr Penton actually makes this statement in the POG Volume 2 DVD. I also wanted to share a photo of my Dad's 74 Husky 125. How many Penton part's can you find on it?
