OK,
Nov 22 is the next American Retro Cross Race. I plan on bringing my 72 6-Day to race that day, ready or not.
It has alot of rough edges, but its time. My goal for the day is to finish, without doing too much damage to the bike or ME!
I also plan on bringing my 69 SL70 for the Rodeo Clown Race later in the day. This one sounds like fun.
Bottom line, I jus wanna ride!!!! Hope to see all you So Cal Poggers there!!!

Garrett ,
We'll be gentle with you , as for the XR 75 clown class , cheating is encouraged , just have fun . [:p]

Mike.
Hope you'll be there on your Honda, I've got the Berkshire running good. Just running every morning to get in shape to have some fun.
I ask is your Honda a 4 stroke 100 cc motor? I would love to find one, as I know they are quite dependable and not as finicky as my Sachs.
Victor
The Honda " twins " should both be there .
Mike
Berkie boys,
Check out the rules for AHRMA 100cc vintage class.
http://www.ahrma.org/Z-2009/ahrma_2009_handbook.pdf
The size limit for 2 and 4 stroke is listed in the rules, plus other info for building a 100 class 2 or 4 stroke bike.
We race AHRMA legal bikes!!!
Building a two stroke is cheaper and can be made to go alot faster than a AHRMA legal four stroke. The rules lean more towards the two stroke bike(ie: reed vavle,28mm carb. The honda can't pull that large a carb.)
At the races, people ask all the time about wanting to get a Honda SL100 to race. After I tell them what it costs to build a race motor that will keep up with a two stroke, there replie is "Oh Never Mind"

AHRMA never has impressed me much anyway. The local clubs, ie., CALVMX and SVRG, aka ARX are not AHRMA Ruled. They are clear and simple on the bike class sizes, 100 cc is 100 cc, no mater if it is 2 stroke, 4 stroke, diesel or a Briggs and Stratton motor.
I believe AHRMA Rules requires me to race my 73 Jackpiner 175cc "like machine of 72 Jackpiner 175cc" in the 250 Sportsman MX Class........why not the 125 cc Sportsman MX Class or better yet the 125 cc Classic Class...no wonder AHRMA is dying off out here in So. Cal SW.
Oh yeah and the 73-74 Husky 125's can ride Classic MX 125....doesn't make sense to me.
Please correct me if I am mistaken, I would then apologize.:)
Let's be fair when we have fun, this is just for fun, isn't it?...:D
Just my 2 cents, or is it 3 cents for four strokes [}:)]!
Victor
Calvmx has 10 races in 2009. Five of those races are AHRMA regional. Hosted by Calvmx, AHRMA rules & Classes.
Calvmx & ARX were host to six Marty Tripes ioo races. I talked to Marty about the size of the Honda four strokes. For the first year we would go with the AHRMA rule.
I think I asked ARX early in the year if they would go with the AHRMA rule on Honda 125 and 100 four strokes. I recall they said yes.
I have only raced AHRMA regional or Marty Tripes races. So all the races I have been to I was welcome.
I race motorcycles for fun and to socialize with like mined people. I stir up the pot once in awhile to try and generate interest and excitement, ask the Hodaka group, they love me:-)
I am not into winning if I have to have a unfair avantage to do it. You do not know me, but there are people on this group or the Vinduro who do and can vouch for my comittmint to the sport of vintage motorcycle racing.
If I plan to race where the Honda SL100 is not welcome, I will bring out my Penda 100CR or my Suzuki TM100. Both are much faster than my Honda Foo-Foo bike!!:-)

In 1972-73, at Corona Raceway, I saw Rocket Rex Staten on a stock looking Honda 4 stroke Enduro with Lights, Turn Signals and a Horn race in the open pro class. They had him start 50ft behind everybody else, backwards and with the engine turned off. He used the Turn Signals for every turn, Beeped the Horn as he passed every rider and won the race by 1/2 a lap. THATS, when I learned 99% of racing is the rider and that I better stay in school.

Here's an ARX member response, I asked for a ruling today....fyi, maybe I'll just ride my Six Day and call it a 100cc bike or maybe I'll even ride my Jackpiner and put the Berkshire tank on it for fun !
Vic,
I am not the sole decision maker for ARX.
We are a loose band of interested parties/volunteers who all want the same thing, which is to put the fun back in racing.
To have a rule you don't enforce is counterproductive. We aren't going to have a tear down rule, fees or fines so unless it is blatantly obvious someone is cheating we are going to roll with it.
We are not AHRMA and we do not use AHRMA rules, so stick a 400 Penton motor in your 125 chassis and go kill the Honda boys, I'd say.
Rick
I am just having fun with you guys :)(back in 73 I was sneaking a Sachs 125 barrel in the 100 class on my Berkshire).....bring all the bikes, I like to just see the different machines from back then...today they all look the same, just different colors.
:D
Victor
Not to beat it up, but here is CALVMX's take on motor size....looks like size does matter ! :)
The following is a response from the CALVMX management:
calvmx rules!!! as far as AHRMA points work that out with Tami If you sign up in CALVMX classes then its easy
You know me Ohio boy I'll work with you
Victor
Enjoy your racing....it has kept me alive a bit longer. :D
Paul.
I apologize if you think I am being a "stinker"....my bad. I really like the looks of those Hondas and the sound, very cool.
Would live to see your Penda CR, I have heard much of them, but never had the chance to see one.
Please accept my apology if you were offended.
Sincerely,
Victor

Congrats on the new ride , don't thinks I've ever seen a Ford Raptor pre-runner .
Mike //www.americanretrocross.org
Ric,
Won't be able to make it to AZ. Will be at the Elsinore Grand Prix Nov 7&8. Come on out. If you need a vintage bike to ride, I can hook you up. http://tinyurl.com/ylczaga
Pablito
Ric,
I am planning on attending the 11/22/09 event at Competetive Edge. I have a 76/77 250 MC5 if you need a ride.

I'll be at the Nov. 22nd race too with my 6-Day and SL70. This will be the 1st real ride for my 6-day in 25 + years. I figure I can drive around and have some fun. I've done some test rides around the Barstow house, but I'm trying to save it for Competitive edge.

Hi Guys,Wow,thanks for the generous offers, but i think my bikes will be done in time, except for a 100 class bike(time is getting tight on getting a berkshire done but i'm gonna try).I didn't mean to sound like i had no bike to ride, just don't know which ones i'm bringing and if i'll have room for the sl70.I'd love to take a lap or 2 on one of the green SL 100's though.I was sponsored on one from late 70 to 72 and have great memories from it(ands stories/accusations of overbores, protests, etc. It was std. bore with the normal mods.+ tricks but ran good, still it was slower than most bikes in 100 Ex. class, but i still got protested a lot(never lost one),and won my share with it anyway-i think it being slower made me faster).Rode the first 4 stroke Nats. at Carlsbad on one too.Someday i'll build another SL.The 100 class was so much fun.
Pablito-Elsinore sounds like mucho fun and thanks for offering a ride, but i'm going to hit ACP nov.7+8.
Mike-I'll be looking for you at ACP,hope to meet you there! The Raptor is an F150 set up for the Dez.Mine is blue with cobalt graphics(not sure the graphics will stay on i have mixed opinion on there looks).
Lloyld-Thanks for the offer on the MC5 but i'll be riding my 75 250 and 72 Mettco 6 days and a smaller bike as well if all goes well.Hope to see you at Competitive Edge and thanks again.
Garrett-Rodeo Clown race?Tell me more-mini/fun class???Hope to see ya there! Is Comp.Edge the only Nov. race?
Oh yeah-Does the 100 class run with the 125's?That will factor in which bikes i bring to cal. races.
Vic-hope you're doing ok and to see you there too. Thanks Again and see ya at the races!

They have a XR75 race at the end of the day. I've never seen it, but, there is a lot of little bikes there. Everybody says its a hoot. Nothing serious.

Thanks for the well wishes and I hope to be there, at least to watch. Yes they run the 100's and 125's together....so last ride on my Berkshire I had to start the second gate so as to collect my points in the 125 cc.
Anyway it is always fun with the ARX group. Everybody wins something.
Victor
Are you going to be able to fit into those green leathers I sold you a few years ago? :)

No comp. edge either for me.my other knee(not the one i just had recontructed)swelled up big last night and i can't put any weight on it.I was thinking i could ride with my brace but the ride to Socal would be too long and painful.Looks like this one get total knee replacement soon.Hope you guys have fun and please post how you did.
I'm really bummed. Ric

Nice set of photos..it's great that our sport has these photographers that show up and capture our action - we can show these to our friends to prove we really aren't crazy and that we really do race! And the photo guys are very reasonable.
Nice diversity of bikes at the event too...
Congrats on your "re-awakening", Garrett. Looks like you're having just as much fun as I am..I just got back into it last year (2008) after 20+ years away from dirt bikes. First a Six Day, and then I too went to a later model (MC5) for a little more displacement and suspension.
Love the old school handlebars -but be forewarned - old handlebars BREAK...probably just because they are old. Check out my story here (sorry if its a bit longwinded...):

I'm sure there are different schools of thought here, but I go with modern aluminum bars (not fat bars) just for the security and I think the aluminum bars may be a little more forgiving on the body. There are some very reasonable ($$) bargains around if you look around.
You SoCal folks are lucky. Long season. Have a blast, Mr. Covington!
Words can not describe how happy I was to take out that bike. I was 15 again only I weighed 60 lbs more. I was shocked at how good it worked after all these years of complete neglect. My Boss showed up to the race and he wants to get into it again and some of the guys at work have old bikes laying around and they want to get into it too. I think the 1 thing that really topped it off was how great everybody has been. 1st. My wife and kids (They realized I had reached a point of no return and nothing was going to get in my way and they stood by me) 2nd the POGer's. With out your help, forget it. And last but not least The people at the Race. ARX is so well run it is amazing, and all the people are there for the shear love of it all.
I need to do some more work on the bike. Correct fork oil level, adjust the shifting and the bars, raise the needle jet 1 notch, new tires blah blah blah
Can't wait.

Hey Victor, I've got an idea.... I have a couple of SL-100's, one SL-125 (I think it is an SL), an XL-175, and an XR-200. Just take them all apart, and reassemble one real fast Honda. joe
