Title: Matching engine # to frame
Post by: Doug Bridges on November 18, 2009, 12:40:14 PM
This is just a question of curiosity. I know that there was never matching numbers on KTM frames and engines other than dates. My Jackpiner frame was made in March 73. The engine is a 72. Were there ever left over engines from previous production years put in to the next years frame? Should I assume that this engine did not come in this frame?
Thanks

i have seen engine cases on the early penton ktm's that each case half was made in different months yet the serial #'s matched. they could take a left and a right, machine them and put them together.  i've seen a 74 harescrambler with a stock motor where the factory painted silver over the black cylinder. they weren't going to throw them away because the model year changed, almost any combination could have been possible, especially close to a model change time. so i would say not it is not safe to assume that the motor did not come with the bike, but its possible that they were from two different bikes. i could  be wrong though, and if i am, someone will chime in. thats the good thing on this message board. there are a lot of people who know a lot about these bikes. chicago jerry
