Title: KTM 250 mc30 What is it???
Post by: garrettccovington on November 22, 2009, 07:13:54 PM
When i was Leaving the Race today I saw a KTM in the back of a Pick up. It was complete and look pretty good.  Front Fender aged and the back fender broken.  It had good compresion and generally look to be in good condition.  Still had the leather magura covers on the clutch and front brake.  Any ways the decal on the side says mc30  (?)250cc and the guy says it was a 1978.

Frame Vin # is 901 02491 eng 9-5421036  I think it is a 79 , but I can't find anything on mc30???

Any help would be appreciated.

It probably said MC80, and is a 1979 from the #'s you gave. Mike

Thanks for the info, The guy wanted $400.00 buck for it and except for the fenders it looked pretty good. It doesn't get spark, so the motoplat is out.  As soon as the sun comes up here, I'll send some Pics.

Hi Garrett,

I'll confirm what Michael Winter wrote. It is a 1979 KTM MC80.

In 1979 KTM did away with the GS6 frame and went back to just one frame style (the MC80). To convert the bike to an enduro model (a GS80), a seperate rear frame loop was (and still is) available to bolt onto the back part of the frame. The MC has a beefy aluminum swing arm, the GS has the 1976-77 style swing arm with a center stand. The only other differences between the MC80 and GS80 are the pipes, side panels, rear fenders, size of gas tanks, and head light.

Well, I was going to take a picture of the bike, but I loaded up the 6-day to wash it and decided to go out riding instead, just got back from washing the 6-day and its to dark to take any pics,  I'll do it tommorrow.  Looks like Al B will get a bunch of new orders 1 week at a time from me again.

A great find ! I have a 1980 of the same. Read somewhere that the 79-80 would turn . I think you have the larger gas tank. LG

Definitely a 1979 250 MC80. That will make a very nice, and fast,  bike. DC plastics has reproduction fenders. Congratulations! Mike

I'm pretty stoked about the whole deal.  After taking my 6-Day out to the desert yesterday with the Kids at work  Something a little bigger with newer suspension, might be a little easier to navigate.
I'm still very very happy with the 6-Day. This will be with me forever. After all these years I can not beleive how good it works and the Looks are Timeless.  My co-workers were blown away!

Cleaned up your '79 will look much like my '80 KTM 250.  I guarantee you will love it - they're great machines!

I showed pketchum's photo of his bike. She really liked it.  She is in a quandry about what color gear  (Green/Orange) she is going to get me for xmas.  To her, everything is a fashion statement.

Garrett,
Here is a pic of the 1979 GS80, with the Enduro kit from an original brochure showing the original decals and color combinations. Tom Brosius offers the decals on his website. Mike

Thanks for the Picture!!  I was wondering what the bike looked like stock.  You don't know how many hours I looked at the 1 side panel, trying to figure out what the MC80 was.  I would rotate it trying to catch a glimps of the old decal sheene. MC ? and kept coming up with MC30.  Then I do a search for KTM MC30 and nothing.
1st I plan on verifying its not stolen with the Barstow PD and then working on the Motoplat.  Then the looks.

Nice find. You may already know this but if not, speak with Dane about the Motoplat...He's the expert and can test it and advise.
