Title: Broken mount on 250
Post by: Britt Boyette on December 07, 2009, 11:28:59 PM
Is this busted off mount repairable? It looks like it may have been over tightened and snapped off the top part which is long gone.

It is repairable.  Weld it solid and larger than original, use a die grinder and files on the weld, then redrill it carefully.   The question is, should it be welded with the engine together so that it does not warp, or should the engine cases be split and emptied?   I hear that Dane Leimbach is very good and experienced at all repairs.

Britt,
This on your 125? Unless you're restoring it for show, I'd forget about it and go without the brace. Not sure you're giving up strength you'll need or notice and the brace gets in the way of carb adjustments and are generally a pain in the arse.

Have yet to hear of anyone who's had a cracked frame or other problems due to no braces, maybe others have stories.

Mac,
This is a 250 according to the topic heading of the post.
Since from previous posts about the conversion, I am assuming that this is intended to be installed in your 125/175 MC5 chassis with no lower engine mounts. Unless you plan on adding the lower mounts, I would not discount the importance of the brace, especially when it comes to engine vibration, which will be a lot more than your 125 engine. You may wind up breaking engine mount brackets from the frame, or worse. keep in mind any welding done to the broken case strut mount should be for Magnesium and an expert welder is recommended.
BTW, Brit, did you see that I have a 1981 KTM 250 torque pipe for sale that would fit your 125/175 frame with a 250 engine? Mike

Actually, I'm going to build up another MC5 from parts and leave the 125 as is. It's just too nice a bike to fiddle with like that. This morning, I was looking at the bike this engine is installed in and maybe I should go in a different dirrection and build it instead.

het britt. i just had a set of cases welded up that had this same lug broken off. it turned out pretty well. you have to have a competent welder though. i may have a set of cases that are too far gone from mag rot that still has this lug attached. if so, i can cut off a larger section around the lug to use to fix that one that you have. that red bike that you have pictured is a good staring point for a potent vintage weapon. a lot of the bikes that i have built for guys started out looking worse than that.    chi jer

Thanks Jerry, that would be great! With this bike, everytime I look at it I wonder why would I part it out. I was checking out the forks and no rust pitting or anything. Then, I was looking at the frame and it has no rock damage, and the tank looks great and just needs new decals. Don't get me wrong, it still needs a bunch of bits and peices but hay, I enjoy buying stuff from AB. Is that the correct color for this frame? It looks factory to me but I don't recall seeing a 75 in any color other than silver.

the frame should have been silver unless they were doing something different on the west coast that i am unaware of. the rattlecan color that i have been using on frames is available at lowes. its a rustoleum product and the color is matte nickel and then i clear over that.

The only way this red could have been shot was to a stripped frame because that's the only paint on the frame plus it a automotive grade paint. It appears to be orginial because of the wear and age.

How hard is it to find usable cases for a 250 that doesn't cost more than a complete engine? These cases may be toast.
