How do I tell which exact cases I have? 5A vs 6A? Anyone know? They have a hole, not a slot for ignition wiring. thanks, Ted

Look at the counter shaft bearing. If you have a 6A engine , it will be 16005 instead of a 16004 . The selector lever will be 2 parts also.
The selector rod will be one piece like the B engines. The old 5 A engines use a selector rod that is threaded on the end and a grooved Nut
to adjust the shift key engagement.
Sachs did make 5A engine's with the larger bearings and 2 piece selector lever. I don't think any Penton's came with that engine though. I made one up for the Sachs 175 motor because of the larger bearings and the bigger shift key.

John, You sound like a talking book on Pentons. I have owned several 5A engines, many 6B engines, but only ONE 6A engine. I believe the 6A was in an early 1972 Penton 100. I set that bike up exclusively for hare scrambles: big enduro tank, layed down KONI shocks, narrowed handle bars, et.al. I really liked that 6A SACHS. Real torquey engine.

I will look at what I have (side covers), but I have only owned a 6A/125. The 6A/100 you had sounds neat with the larger crank.
