Here's ol' Steve.  Pretty cool, huh?  Too bad his Triumph isn't in the pics.

Hi Ted,

Those are some cool photos. Toni is a big Steve McQueen fan, and here are some additional photos that we have saved.

Troy Lee Designs announced this week that they are going to produce a Steve McQueen helmet line. Toni is lovin' this!

They also have a Malcolm Smith helmet.

The book " 40 Summers Ago...Hollywood Behind the Iron Curtain" has an awesome amount of photos that are used to tell the story of the 1964 US ISDT Team.  Bud and Dave Ekins, Steve McQueen, Cliff Coleman, John Steen and several others are followed pretty closely in this great pictorial.

The book includes a 20 X 25 poster of Steve sitting on his Triumph at what might be a check point with a cigarette dangling from his mouth.

I am sure that Toni already has the book and has possibly almost worn it out :)

For some trivia, was it Bud Ekins who made the famous jump scene in "The Great Escape" Maybe they were closer than we know? In any event SM is sorley missed.

Hey, I think Kipper is right - it appears Steve's bike is the one just across the fence from him in the first photo.  His number did end in "8".  Man, doesn't the Triumph just look like a street bike?  How'd you like to have to herd that thing around in the muck?

I saw the Great Escape again recently, and was amazed at how agressively Steve threw the Triumph around in the scenes where he was attempting to elude his pursuers.  I would appear that was his style; very agressive - a lot of energy expelled.

Does everyone but me know the purpose for what looks like a pressure bottle attached to the left rear frame tube with a tube running under the seat? The bike in the background seems to have a similar setup on the right side. Is it maybe for tire airing?

Yeah Tom, it was Bud who made the jump, and they were friends.

Paul,

You're right about that!

We also have this book, which is pretty cool too:

But I've been able to locate this book. It's also photos from the '64 ISDT.

As Paul mentioned, the book, "40 Summers Ago...Hollywood Behind the Iron Curtain", is one best books that you'll ever find. It's 192 pages, and almost every page has a photo on it, and most of those are full page.

Hi Nelson,

You're exactly right. In the book "40 Summer Ago...", they show some modifications that was done to Steve's bike, and it's states that it's a, "Air bottle for rapid puncture repair".

The hose coming off of the bottle is long and wraps all around the underside of the seat, and the bungie cord that's going across the seat is holding the hose from falling down.

Steve also did one heck of a job driving the Mustang in the chase scene in the movie Bullitt, or did he?

Hold up, now.  While it is true that Bud Ekins did some of the hairer driving in those famous chase scenes in Bullitt (like the jumps), most if it was all Steve.  Look closely at the movie in high-resolution and you can see it is indeed SM in the car.  Interesting also, are the oversights.  For example, you can see the in-car cameras and the camera mounts in certain scenes.  Plus, there were some errors, which nonetheless made the final cut.  At one point in the chase for example, a parked car is sideswiped.  Not in the script.  It just happened.  Also, at one point Steve blows a turn while chasing the black Charger.  He stops, slams the Mustang into reverse, and smokes it backwards big-time, before taking off again.  Again, not in the script.  Steve just overshot his braking point.  Note, that's one of the scenes where you can clearly see a camera in the back of the Mustang.

Besides, the "air" shots in Bullitt, Bud also was the guy on the Triumph street bike who lowsided as the Mustang and Charger raced by in the opposite direction.

All in all, much credit to both McQueen and Bud Ekins, both of whom did some real-world, old-school, hard driving, in virtually stock automobiles.  No special effects and no computer graphics in '68.

I see that Triumph is making a "Steve McQueen Inspired Motorcycle". Here's a link to the story: http://www.amadirectlink.com/news/story.asp?id=1504

Troy Lee Designs is also making clothing to go along with their Steve McQueen helmet: http://www.racerxonline.com/video/TLD_A1.aspx

Don't forget Steve had quite a stable of airplanes later on including a mint Piper Cub, and a Cessna 170B. Steve passed away right about the time I got my instrument rating.
