Title: Powder Coating Paint ID?
Post by: wfopete on January 13, 2010, 06:01:04 AM
I'm getting ready to get my 1981 GS250 frame (orange) powder coated.

Is there a correct powder coating paint number that anyone is aware of?

I'll take a stab. It appears that the early KTM's were painted with popular German car colors of the era, even the Jackpiners (Petty Blue is close). Look at '73 VW bright orange code L20B/E1.

I matched my 1980 KTM frame using the tab on the frame that was under the Motoplat top coil when I had it powdercoated a few years back. I believe it was very close to Hemi Orange. When you visit a powdercoater they will have many shades of orange in the "powder chip" book. I am real happy with the color of my frame and it is easy to find matching paint for those items that missed the powdercoat process. I don't powdercoat aluminum or magnesium items as the temps are detrimental to the alloy's mechanical properties as they can change the heat treatment that may have been used.

Thanks I'll call the shop and see if they have any of those chips.

I think Ford called it Poppy Red on the early Mustangs. Chevy's engine orange may be close too. A trip to Auto Zone to get a few different cans of orange may clear that one up. For the JP people, Petty blue and Ford's Grabber Blue are very close.

I was going to call Kyle and see if he could give me the Petty Blue paint code. The GS orange is Dupont YS017 and PPG 61456.  KTM used Porsche riviera blue, code 39E.
Speaking of Nascar, Hendrick Motorsports is currently running a Saab 2000 (N509RH) in and of Haiti in the relief effort. Thanks Rick.

You will find loads of info via the search function with Alumablast being a sort of front runner for the frame silver. I've always thought the codes should be systematically collected and listed on the home page. Tom Brosius has on his site the best single collection I've seen listed.

Thanks I compiled quite a few above, and the local DuPont dealer
was able to cross several numbers for me. I'll put a chart together at some point that should prove useful.
