"Mick, My daughter just finished up 4 years in the USMC doing aviation electronics. Came out with three stripes and a lot of maturity she needed when she went in. She's taking advantage of the GI Bill and going to UNC-Wilmington now, studying physical theraphy/rehab/sports medicine. Yup, I'm a proud dad, just like you!"
Jeff DeBellJeff...I've lived in Wilmington, NC for 30+ years and can tell you UNCW is a great school. Get in touch if I can do anything to help out your daughter.

Thanks, Steve!
She and my grandson live in Hubert at the moment but hope to sell the house when the market strengthens a bit. Long commute but she is very positive about school and loving it. Funny to hear this "wise old 24-yr old" talking about how immature the rest of the college kids are! :)

This is the best deal going for kids today, I am trying to talk my 20 year old niece into joining the Army (Mass National Guard), one of my largest contracts. She has two years at UMass Amherst with no money to continue making this a logical choice, and the military pays well and leaves the door open to a world of government jobs.

While military service was somewhat frowned and looked down upon when I got out of high school in the immediate post-Viet Nam era, these days the various services offer some real opportunities for young people, one of the most important being given the post-high school life experience needed to mature into a reasonably thinking young adult. I know I would have benefitted greatly and saved myself some painful lessons in the school of hard knocks!
I know several guys who have done 20 in the military and "retired" at 38 to second careers doing related work. One guy was EOD and the police bomb squad couldn't wait to get their hands on him! Another guy retired on a Friday and went back to work the following Monday doing the exact same job as a civilian contractor making double his military salary...and they keep great benefits, a decent retirement, etc. Sometimes I think we should be like Switzerland or Isreal and require two years of military duty at the age of 18. Who among us at 18 knew what we wanted to do for the rest of our careers (except ride motorcycles?)
My daughter went into the USMC as an immature 18-yr old know-it-all and came out an honest, hard-working, sane young lady. I would heartily encourage the Marines to any of your kids! Just my 2 cents worth and sorry to ramble off track so long....back to Pentons now!
