Title: My bike fell off my trailer Ahhh!!!
Post by: garrettccovington on January 26, 2010, 10:27:19 PM
It could have been alot worse.  Thank you O' Lord!!!  I took KTM out riding today, still working on why it won't idle, so I had my new side panels off and just dropped off the seat to get re-covered after riding, As I pulled into my little house in Barstow, the Bike was nowhere to be found.  Fortunatly it was right around the corner from the house laying in the middle of the street.  AHHHHH!!!!!
Right foot peg, front brake perch, lever and right side of the handle bars took the brunt of it.  Fortunatly, I picked up some spares from a guy in AZ today.
Besides being stupid and only putting on 2 straps instead of 4 like I always do, I rather be lucky than good.  Thank you Lord!!!

It could have been much worse, sitting in the middle of I-15 under an 18-wheeler.

That reminds me of going down the freeway about 20 years ago and seeing a bike trailer comming the other way on the other side of the freeway.  It was one of those 3 rail bike trailers that have the angle iron for the wheels to sit in.  Unfortunately, the rear wheel of one of the bikes had jumped out of the track and was dragging slightly sideways on the freeway.  The tire had completely shredded and it was on the rim.  It was about 4 miles until the next exit, no way for me to turn around and catch the guy.  I hope someone got his attention before the entire rearend of the bike ground away.

Gary, it sounds like only cosmetic damage.  Hang in there.

Something we would do is a lower crankcase pressure check to see if there are any leaks.  It is sort of like checking a car coolant system with a gage.  Remove exhaust and carb.  Plug either one, and pump air into the crankcase.  Check to see if it leaks air.  I think it is called a "leak-down" test.  Engines do not run well, especially IDLE, if the crankcase is not sealed well.  It can detect work crank seals, rings, et.al..  I think the mag side seal is more prone to wear due to possible dirt in that area.  The other side is usually lubed by the trans oil, sometimes.  Air leaks tend to make idle irregular...

I rented an enclosed trailer for a 12 hour trip from Michigan to Massachusetts.  The person there has a massive collection of Cheney's, Rickman's, and other forms of specialty bikes.  Thought it would be neet to take my bike for him to see.  Secured the Cheney down and headed for the gas station 7 miles away.  Opened the rear door and it had fallen over already.  Got to Ohio and hour away and over it had gone again.  Stopped at every rest stop along the way that night checking.  It went over 5 times before I got there with some very frazzled nerves.  Picked up another bike, loaded them both in, strung straps everywhere, and headed home.  Again, stopping at every rest stop initially, then every other, then spacing them out farther each time.  The Triumph moved but thankfully they didn't tangle with each other.  You can't imagine how happy I was when I finally arrived at the driveway, swung the door open, and saw everything was in one piece.[^]

You guys are RIGHT!!!! Those are bad stories.  note to self, FOUR STRAPS ALWAYS!!!!

Joe, I think thats where I'm headed, changing the main seal. I'm gonna de-carbonize the pipe (Its a mess inside there) add another ground from the motor to the coil/frame and pull of the motoplat and make sure there is a good clean ground behind it.  Try to make it thru the next round of the ARX races. If nothing is better then pull the seal.  In all reality, I can't believe the bike works as good as it does.  I figure by time I figure it out, I'll need a piston and rings

I have a very cool Three rail aluminum trailer...I am amazed how easy it is to pull. I have been on several long road trips with it and everytime I do it scares me a bit for fear of loosing a bike. I came close when the rear wheel came loose and was dragging on the ground. I caught it before it did any real damage. but when I use it I do go to alot of extra lengths to keep my bikes safe... still I worry....It is one of the reason I use my enclosed trailer most of the time even though it cost me more money...

I use a 12' flatbed like many lawn care specialists use.  I can get 6 bikes on it.  One time a bike on the outside broke a tie down, but fortunately it was the outside strap and it leaned to the inside.  Ever since then I always double strap the outside bikes and use old tires between the bikes for cushion.

War story.

Back in the day (early 70's) I had a home made open 3 rail trailer with no springs and I hauled bikes all over the central east coast and made 3 round trips to LA from Baltimore.  I probably logged 15,000 miles or more with that setup.

Fortunately, I never had a problem with a bike falling or breaking a tiedown. 2 tiedowns on the forks and a military fabric strap with buckle attached that I used to tiedown the rear wheel to the rail.  It never failed.  I would be suspect of any bungee cords or rubber straps for rear wheel tiedowns.

I did see a rider driving into a race with a Bultaco on his open trailer and rear end bounced off the trailer, caused some sparks which ignited fuel that was leaking from the carb and burnt up both bike and trailer.

Like Mick, we use a 12' landscape trailer, easy on and off and always use two sets of straps. I'm thinking of adding some lock chocks up front for stability and making tie down easier.

By buddy Big Mac picked up a trailer a few weeks ago. It was a Hi point rig... I have only seen a few but this was different than any others, It was only cab height. It looked like you could put three bikes in pretty easy. with that height, it would go down the road pretty easy and it looked like it was fairly light too... I like my trailer but some times I think it is overkill...Did Hipoint make several models?

I've become a HiPoint fan...1100 lbs empty, tows at 65mph in OD on the flats with a just a V-6, rolls around by hand easy, fits under a standard garage door. Have to stoop quite a bit when inside, but there's no fun being inside a trailer anyway.

When I joined POG, I had no intentions of going dirt bike riding, Even though I live smack dab in the middle of the desert.  I just wanted to fix up my bike and keep it in the living room of my little house and to keep my childhood bike from ending up in the dump.

Well 1 thing led to another, now I have 2 vintage bikes and I'm racing them.  They don't look or run the best at the track, but thats ok, neither do I.  1 thing I know I'm having a blast and need a truck to go to the races with both of my bikes.

This is a picture of my 6-day before I started working on it.(http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/zz38/garrettccovington/Picture593.jpg)
