Title: Neither snow, nor sleet...........................
Post by: Paul Danik on February 07, 2010, 08:44:24 AM
The meeting went on and there were many travel stories to be told.  Folks came from as far away as Mass., it was nice to have such a great day of fellowship and the day will be long remembered by all who attended, maybe for various reasons:D  The technical sessions were put on hold till a later date.

We have over twenty some inches here in Mars, PA.  When I parked the truck late last night to walk in my long lane the snow was up to my waist most all the way in. The Kubota is warming up as I type and I am heading out to plow.

Some folks are still traveling home and hopefully all are safe.

Paul

Will do the KTM engine session at Mid Ohio, what a crazy trip to the POG meeting.  First time I have ever ridden AA trails in my full sized van!  It was just as bad going home as Ohio doesn't have very good snow removal equipment[?]  Most of it was in the ditch![:0]

I'm glad to hear you guys made the round trip safely. I had planned to be there but the threat of heavy snow made me chicken out. Looking forward to the presentation at VMD so see you there !!

Before JP, Al Born, Jack, and I hit the road, I got into JP's snowplow and started cleaned out his driveway. There was about a 3' drift in the end of driveway, so without cleaning it out, we wouldn't get on the road.

When we left at JP's house at 8:00, we went about 20 to 35 miles per hour all the way to Ashland. There was at least 6" on the roads.

This afternoon I got into the snowplow and cleaned up JP's driveway, our shop's driveway. I had to shovel another 3' drift out of the back of the shop and got very tired!

But, it is still winter!

I sorry to hear that. Saturday was beautiful, there was a vintage race south of here about 3 1/2 hours away and there was a good turnout..300 plus...  I didn't go, my weekend to do Prison ministry... My wife says we sent you guys all of our snow flakes your way,, and wanted to know if you need a few more..flakes of a two legged type.:D It has been a very mild winter for us (warmest January on record), our biggest worry is will we have enough rain to keep the forests from burning... you would think that with all of the woods and mountain areas we have around here there would be plenty of riding areas but there is not, the closest place to ride in the woods is at least a couple hours away.... hope all made it home safe...

WOW!  Talk about a weekend adventure!   We (me, wife, and two young children) travelled in our Jeep Cherokee through the snow covered highways in Ohio at about 25 mph most of the way there.   Roads were unplowed and visibility was not very good Friday night.  Actually a nice drive once the wife and children fell asleep.   Hotel parking lot had about 12" of unplowed snow when we arrived, and when we left.  After my wife dropped me off at the AMA Museum for the POG meeting, she and the children headed to the COSI (Center of Science and Industry) in Columbus about 20 minutes away.  It was really nice to meet ALL the POG members whom I had previously known by name from the POG site.   Great idea, Kip Kern, for supplying KTM literature to review before the Mid-Ohio event.  Now I can be prepared for your presentation.   Dane, thank you for answering all the questions regarding ignitions and Moto-Plat.   Jack Penton, thank you for the behind the scene tour of the museum.  I especially liked your dad's 1964 Husky.  It was nice to listen to the stories which John Penton had to share.   Thanks to everyone who attended and made the event very enjoyable!  Looking forward to our next big meeting at Mid-Ohio to meet many more POG members.   joe

Joe someone finally showed up to plow Saturday night after everything re-froze. We left Sunday around 8 a.m. and arrived here on Cape Cod at 9 p.m., 1725 miles for the round trip. I won't be able to make Mid Ohio however Debbie is liking the idea of Lansing in July, although I do plan on riding in a NETRA event, Spring Challenge which is in Mass on the Honda.

Even with the crazy weather, we still had pretty close to 40 folks at the meeting, but the fact that 11 states were represented is still a bit of a shock to me.  According to " Big Al " Born the breakdown is as follows, Ohio 20, Michigan 5, Illinois 4, Maryland 2, Mass. 2, New York, West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and PA. 1 each.

Any of you folks who attended the 2003 ISDTRR will surely remember the beautiful Hollerich farm in Chesire, Mass where the event took place, and the fantastic collection of motorcycles that Jim Hollerich has, well Jim made the trip to Ohio for the meeting and we sure enjoyed having him around.

Dane and Kip had done their homework and were ready to do their technical presentations, but given the circumstances it was decided to hold their presentations at a later date, VMD 2010.

Jack Penton gave us a "behind the scenes" tour of the Museum that was quite an eye opener. Jack also was this month's "what's in your garage" presenter and he had some very interesting items to show.  He had some pictures that showed him on a very early Steel Tank Penton, turned out the Steel Tanker was the one off Puch powered Steel Tanker.

The day ended with Mike Scholl showing us a collection of slides that were taken in 1968 at the Inter-Am that took place on the Mathias property.  Lots of young guns in the pictures including Jack, Dane, Joel Robert,Torsten Hallman, Doug Wilford and many others.

All in all it was a great day, thanks to all of you folks who attended and helped to make this yearly event such a great time.

We had about 7 additional inches.  The Kubota L-35 makes quick work of snow removal even on our extremely long lane. So far the high winds have missed us, that is something we don't need.

The news reports of all the folks without electric for almost a week are sad, I wish all those folks and the workers trying to restore power to them the best.  Every day Judy and I comment often about how lucky we are.

Hope all you folks are doing well.

Paul

Last year, I hooked up a 10KW (10,000 watt) generator and am glad I did.  No more power outages for us!

Thursday brought us a blizzard here on the Cape, 55 MPH winds and a brief outage, didn't get a chance to wind up the genny though. The sad part is a snow-packed motocross track, no more practice for a while.
