Title: 1978 MC5 Air Boot
Post by: Jeff Vlk on February 22, 2010, 04:01:07 PM
I was going to get the air boot for a 1978 MC5 250 remade. Part # 55.06.026.500.  I have found that these are hard to come by and I was unable to located any.  I have a good used one to have copied.  Does anyone have any idea on how many 78 250 had been made?  If that part number fits any other models, and is anyone else interested in getting one of these boots.  This is the one between the carb and airbox.

Check with Al first to see if he has any. There was someone that recently found a source at a good price if they actually came through. Hopefully they will post their findings. If it is the offset one like pictured on pg 10 of the 78 MC5 manual, I have a nos one with a little shelf scuffing available shipped for $40. Mike

Jeff,
The one I have is # 026 in the diagram on pg. 10 of the 78 MC5 manual, which doesn't angle inward. Are you are referring to # 326 in the 79 manual which does angle inward, but is a lot shorter? Parmabike usually sells both of these on eBay for $55. Mike

Mike,
It is Part # 55.06.026.500  #126 in the parts book.

#126 is for a 125 in the 79 Manual, and is listed as part # 51.06.026.500. #126 is not used in the 78 MC5 Manualn instead it is listed as #26. I thought that you were talking about one for a 1978 MC5 250? Mike

Garrett,
The one that Al lists as 1977 and sells for $40 is the same as one of the 2 versions that Parmabike sells for $55, and I didn't see that one listed currently on eBay, so Parmabike may be out of stock for the moment. If Al or Parmabike doesn't have any, my offer of $40 shipped still stands. Mike

I'm not sure what I have?  My airboot dim are as follows. I.D. on carb is around 51mm.  I.d. on airbox is around 72mm. Length is around 35 mm.  In the parts list I'm looking at it gives a p/n as 520.06.026.600 and the word (lange 62mm)  Whatever that means and whereever they got 62mm at?  I'll post a pic later today

What you have is #326 in the 79 Manual, part # 54.06.026.500. Lange is length, which is 34mm in this particular case. The one listed by Parmabike is the closest to the one like you have and his rough approximations of size are: diameter 75 mm to 50mm length 46mm, and will most likely work for you. The one I have is 70mm long and can only be cut down to 50-52mm in length. Mike

I will post a pic later of the air boot.  It is not the same as any listed or pictured on the vintage dirt bike web site.  I believe it is only for a 1978 250 MC5.  When you see the pic you will understand.  I have the longer one on the bike now but had to cut it down almost to the taper.  Makes it hard to put on and it bunches up a little. Getting back to my other question, how many 1978 250 mc5 have been made?  If I have these remade who would be interested in getting one.

Did you look on Al Buehners site on the suppiers page? He has the most common one listed as a 77 125-175 boot for $40, which in all reality should be listed as 125-400 with Bing carb, and may be the one you are referring to. Mike

The boot Jeff is referring to is for the 78 Only it appears  Part# 55 06 026 500 for the different shaped (plastic)air box than the 77's (Aluminum)   The one on Al's site is for the 77 125-175 Part# 51 06 026 100  or the 250-400 one Part# 55 03 026 000   I have personally  experienced this issue being that Jeff has my old bike and I have bought a 77 MC5 which requires a diff boot # 54 06 026 500 for the GS type carb setup on mine (figure that out )  All in All very confusing to say the least.    Anyone have a rear backing plate for the 77 that isn't all wobbled out at the brake arm pivot ?

This is off my 79KTM MC80 250cc, Its dry rot pretty bad. But I'm really not sure what my bike really is.  Vintage Dirt Bike parts .net calls this part a 80-81.  The Serial numbers on the engine and frame say it is a 79, but there has been some stuff that leads me to believe it could be a  78 bike.  Kinda reminds me of that Johnny cash song. where he takes 1 part out of the factory and has a 74, 75, 76, 77, 78,79,80 and 81 Penton/KTM 250.

What I am using right now is a UNI Dual stage  "tube/sock" airfilter until I get all the parts to make my airbox/airfilter complete.
The uni filter has a hard rubber flange that hose clamps onto the carb perfect.  I backfeed/snake the airfilter/carb assy thru the airbox until the carb will fit on the intake manifold.  Be careful not to kink the throttle cable.  I was at Terrycable this morning getting a new one.  If you go this route you have to get the 6 inch long one. the shorter one doesn't allow enough air for the motor.  It actually works pretty good out here in the desert.

My 72 6-day cage and no-toil airfilter fit perfectly in the 79whatever airbox, just need the airboot and need to make a little holding rod.

Here is a pic of what I am looking to have remade.  The part # is molded right in the side of it, 55.06.026.500 . In my KTM parts book this shows to be the right one for the 1978 MC5 250.  Does anyone want to have this made or do they have any to sell.  Jeff

Jeff,
What manual are you looking at? Can you send a pic of the front cover of the manual. That boot looks like one I had for a 81 250, but I don't have an 81 manual. My MC5/78 manual depicts the boot like I posted for that same part # on page 10, and no boot like you have is even depicted in my 78, 79 or 80 manuals that I have been able to find, although the one Garrett posted is shown in the 79 manual without the angle from what I can tell. Wow,
That is not the one pictured in the 78 MC5 chassis manual with the same part #. I do not have the engine manual for 78, but I have the chassis manuals from 74-80, and the engine manuals in 77, 79, and 80. I looked in my shop to see if I still had that particular boot, and I did not. The one I used on my 78 MC5 is more like the one I posted only the shorter version that does not angle inward. Application would all depend on which intake manifold was used, since there are a few variations. I wonder why the chassis manual depiction doesn't match the engine manual, as it is also printed in January 78?. I must have sold the boot I had like yours, since I did not use it on any of my 78-80 250's with the orange plastic air boxes. Rob Wager reproduced these among others until his place burned, so you might inquire with him through OZKTM to see if they were good sellers. Mike

Jeff,,  Mine is different than yours, so I would have to decline.  You know there was this guy in Australia,(I forgot his name) that use to make rubber parts for the Penton guys and all the vintage bikes.  I guess his shop burned down a couple of years ago. As far as I know he still isn't up and running.  A real sad story.  You go to his web-site and the list of POGers that donated old parts to make new ones is pretty long.  I figure most of the old rubber parts came from him and maybe the stock is about to run out.  If you have a source to get the stuff remade it might be helpful to the new POGer's and vintage bike guys.  I can't speak for the guys that sell the parts like AL B, or GenuineNOS, But VintageDirtBikeParts never returned my call so maybe he's out of my part.  Of course the investment would be high and sales, pretty slow, so this would be a real labor of love for anybody to get into.  Eventually the price of these parts woud go thru the roof.

Garrett,
That was Rob Wager. Jeff, I have an old email address for him from before his shop burned if you want to see what his opinion is on the sales figures for the different air boots that he made before the unfortunate tragedy. He made his air boots from UV resistant urethane that would outlast the tradition rubber compounds originally used. Mike

Rob Wagner is out of the business, however there is another individual who is making rubber parts in Australia.

He is FERNANDO FRANCO //[email protected]

I got an airboot for a Husky from him last September.

I know he has done some KTM air boots.  He may have what you are looking for.
