Title: 77-80 6 fin 175 cylinder
Post by: Mike Lenz on February 23, 2010, 09:14:51 AM
I know this is a hard to come by item and am prepared to pay top dollar or trade for something else hard to come by I may have. A couple things that come to mind that I would be willing to part with for a good cyl and head are a NOS 79-81 tall seat or a NOS 1980 MX tank...or you name what you are looking for.
Thanks!
Mike

Garrett,
The 79-81 plastic tanks have the production date clock molded into the underside of the tank, which would help determine the exact date of the tank. Mike

My bike is down in Chino Hills and I'm up in Barstow for the week.  I saw the production clock on the tank you sent me and I don't recall seeing one on mine.  My tank is like a big watermelon, were as the tank you sent me is more modern looking.

Garrett,
The tank you have on your bike in the pics I have seen is an Enduro 79 tank. The one I sent you is a 9/79 dated, most likely early 1980 tank. They had 3 different sized tanks between 1980 and 1981. The smaller MX tank, a medium size Enduro tank, and a larger enduro tank, which was used for sure in 80-81 and has 4 holes drilled into the top for a tank bag and is quite a bit larger. I don't know if there were more than 2 tank sizes used in any one year according to the parts manuals but there are 3 noticeably different size tanks. Mike

For the 1981 model KTM's, there were 3 tanks available.  A 7.3 liter, an 8.3 liter and a 10 liter tank.  All of these tanks were compatible with all size bikes from the 125's through the 495's.

If I am not mistaken, I believe both the 79 and 80 models were different design tanks that the 81.

The only difference in the 81 tanks, besides the size choices, were that they had screw on KTM badges. I don't have an 81 manual, but the 79 125-400 manual only shows the MX and the extra large tank without the holes for the tank bag, and the 79 420 manual shows the MX tank and the medium sized tank, as well as a metal tank,(probably for foreign use, since they couldn't run plastic tanks in some countrys). The 80 manual shows only the medium size tank and the large tank with the holes for the tank bag. but I had a 80 MX small tank that is not listed in the manual, so it is pretty confusing what was actually available each year. 79 tanks had a distinctive different look to them. I will get a pict on here if I can.  The 80 MX tanks were very similer to the 81 MX tanks that have the metal badge.

Mike Lenz,
I would like to talk to you about some of your parts.  Can you email me at [email protected]?  I tried to reach you through this message board but I still don't think it's working.  Cheers.
