Title: New to POG / First Penton
Post by: Matthew McPhail on March 02, 2010, 08:23:01 AM
Hey all!

I'm new to POG and also just purchased my first Penton project.  At 30, most of these bikes are older than me.  My dad raced Pentons in the FTR enduro series here in FL back in the early 70's and I grew up watching him move his run down, rusty old Pentons around the garage as they got in the way time after time.  He didn't ride after my brother and I were born and I didn't start riding until about 5 years ago.

About 3 or 4 years ago those two old rust buckets that I always saw in the garage were donated to Ted Guthrie (OhioTed).  One became the beautiful Six Days that I'm sure many of you have seen pics of or may have even seen in person at one of the rallies.  The other is a Bershire 100 that is still in need of some real TLC to my knowledge.

I've always had a love for vintage bikes.  The simple mechanical and artistic nature of them is much more appreciable than the new bikes.  The fact that I've ridden KTMs and my dad's love for Pentons has given me a little brand bias!

A couple weeks ago I bought my first Penton. A Mint 400 from Chuck Purinton.  Chuck and Ted have directed me already to some names here and some great resources here at POG for my project. I basically have the entire motor, frame, swing arm, tank, clamps, forks, and a few other odds and ends, so I've got a good start.

This all leads me to my first question of the brain trust that is POG.  Is there a complete listing of parts for the Mint 400 outside of the engine.  I have the owners and parts manuals with all the engine detail I could ever need.  I need to know what I'm missing though in the way of things like, chain guides, rear brake rods, fastener sizes, etc.  I'm trying to take an inventory of the parts I still need to collect.

I look forward to sharing this build with you guys and learning a lot from all of you.

Thanks!

Great!  I ordered my owner/repair manual from Al.  I guess I didn't look down the page far enough to find this!

Welcome to the group. Pentons are a thing of beauty.
  A couple of hints.
1st take a before pic. then post it.  The rattier the better.

2nd. If you have any questions, learn how to search the "Message Board"  everything that needs to be asked has been asked and answered in greater detail than you can imagine.  Everything from paint codes, fuel, how to post a pic.

3rd. Post the after pic.  We love to see the Bikes come back to life.

4th. Welcome again and ask any question, no matter how dumb.  I've asked some of the dumbest.

Matt,
Welcome to "Pentonville". There is a wealth of knowledge here from a great group of folks so basically all you have to do is ask the question and someone is sure to respond. I restored a 74.5 Mint 400 a few years ago and if I can be of help just let me know. I may even have some parts leftover from my project so if there is something specific you need I'll take a look. Once again welcome to the group !!
