Title: Original GS6
Post by: rob w on March 11, 2010, 12:00:02 AM
How about this one.
1977 Penton GS6 400 - guarantee 100% original to the day it was new - 241 Total miles.

Mike Winter - You tell me I should take some pictures before I start a project, here they are.
Has a horn, and compression release.
Haven't even wiped the dust off yet, looks like it'll need a rear fender, and....
But, not too shabby eh?

Nice! What carb? And is the compression release via extra plug hole or through a port in the back of the cyl? Looks like sidestand--any mounts for center? Whenever you get around to it more pics and closeups of pipe, etc would be great-- Congrats!

Very cool!  I had one just like it, sold it in 2003 on ebay to a guy from PA.  What a find, where did it come from?

John, OEM 38mm Bing carb - compression release is through horizonal  port provided in right side, rear of head.
Will take pics of whatever you want, and will look for center stand mounts today.
Kurt, I bought both this one and a 77 MC5 400 (see "clean machine" now on page 7) about 5 or 6 years ago. Both bikes were purchased new in 1989 from Flint Indian Sales - Flint, MI. This one has a 1991 Michigan ORV sticker on it.
Neither bike belongs to me today.
Cool is'nt it, should be a real fun project.

Cool beans!
So, was the supertrapp exhaust tip an optional item when they were new. All the GS-6 bikes I have seen pics of have the large enduro silencer. That rear pipe section looks more like an MX pipe. Mike

Rob,

DC Plastics is in the process of duplicating the original Falk rear fender that I sent to them.  My guess is it should be available very soon.  I'll keep you advised.

I have the same bike except it is a 250, but it has 1500 miles on it.

Mike, I've seen that same pipe set-up around these parts several times before. The only GS I've ever run across with the bazooka/enormous pipe, was a 125.

Don't you just love that original patina of the front Marzocchi forks? It is a shame that there isn't any exact color paint to match it. I decided to leave the fork lowers on my 76 MC5 400 original, but since my shop isn't heated all of the time, they have begun to oxidize and I will have to paint or clear coat them anyway. I may have to resort to having some paint custom mixed to match the original. There have been a lot of "close matches" by POG members, but I don't think anything has ever been found to match exactly.
Did you see this NOS set of Ceriani forks that sold on eBay a while back with a somewhat similar finish? Mike

Nice bike Rob. I've got one just like it with minimum mileage (speedo missing when I bought it). I'm missing the horn but haven't really looked for one either. Mine has the MC exhaust tip and a Lectron carb. I added a decompressor. The bars were tweaked and the right side foot peg bent. I suspect the owner let this beast get away from him and he parked it for purposes of self preservation. It's a HOOT when I take it out to the club I belong to, the younger guys don't know what it is and the older guys just stand there with their mouths open remembering the good old days. I get the same response when I take my '72 Six Days (it's in great, original shape also).

Very interesting,  I had a '78 KTM 400 MC5 that was also bought new from the same Flint Indian auction.  The MC5 was brand new, never had fuel in the tank.  I had it in my living room.  Never started it, sold it to a guy in Rhode Island in 2000

When is the last time that you saw one of those rubber frame to air cleaner boots in good shape? Most of them usualy wind up being wrapped with duct tape. Mike

I think it's just a cross section piece of inner tube.

It's the most water resistant Penton I've ever seen. The inner rear mud flap covers a wide area, and goes all the way down to the top of the swingarm.

Ron, Absolutely - Do you mean the engine's side cases, or the plastic side panels ?

Bob,
That air cleaner to frame rubber has an actual part # 55.06.005.000 for 125-400, referred to as a "rubber" but an inner tube would definitely work. Mike

Riddle me this Batman...the plastic cover on the side opening of the air filter box -would it fit on the side opening of the MC5 air filter box also or are they physically different?  My MC5 doesn't have such a cover for the opening and it seems to invite all kinds of foreign material. The side cover on that side of the bike does not EVEN seal up well against the box. I am probably going to make some kind of seal on the inside of the side cover OR make myself a nice duct tape cover. [}:)]

If the answer is yes it will fit, you can already anticipate my next question, El Poggero's. [:I]

Nice GS400 "project". And what a great (side)story about an auction selling brand new bikes 10 years later.

Post by: 454MRW on March 13, 2010, 08:16:58 PM
Yes, The MC5 airbox is the same, and Al Buehner probably has the covers in stock. You will probably have to call and ask him, since I don't see them on his website. I gave one to Don at DC Plastics to reproduce, but I don't think that he ever got around to it. The MC5 and GS6 models without the cover in place that I have seen usually had a foam seal glued to the side panel that helped keep the dirt out. Mike

Many thanks! Great pix.  Is there a rubber insulating ring for the headlight inside the nacelle?

Has anyone picked up on the 250 GS6 in Atlanta?  Looks pretty original too?

John,
The chassis manual does not show a rubber ring of any kind around the headlight, only a bracket and coil above the headlight and a pvc bracket under it to clamp it in place. I know that the earlier metal headlight housings had the rubber insulating ring around the headlight. Mike

Who says Pentons cannot be a good investment? Better than flipping clapped out houses. Find yourself a Penton and a little hi-temp paint and voila, you are in business. And if your avarice knows no boundaries then a $4k BIN seems like a good idea too. Of course this is a free country and free market so I would not have it any other way. This is to keep the story sort of open. Caveat emptor.

Your absolutely right here Mike, think of a Penton, or several other makes for that matter, as a mutual fund
you can ride. You can even put your IRA contribution for 2009 in the tool bag, probably safer there.

With 241 miles, and no evidence of ever being involved in a crash, I don't know why anyone would swap out exhaust pipes.....
BUT, I have the vehicle's title with the original owners name and address on it. So I'll try to contact him, and follow up on the entire bike's past history.

Bob...the original pipe on my 1977 400GS6 has a capped end held on with 2 springs....A replacement pipe I bought later has a Supertrapp welded on the end. I don't know if the Supertrapp was added by the previous owner but I'm positive the capped end with the springs was stock. I'm sure of that....I'm the original owner.

From the photos I have seen of the 77 models, the GS had the large silencer and the MC's used a smaller silencer similar to the one in Rob W's photo.  But as we all know KTM didn't always do things the same way all the time.

On my 77 GS, the end cap is held on with 3 bolts, no springs.

Other than it is missing the black plastic chain guard used on the GS6 models, the only other things I notice is that the speedometer should be mounted in front of the handlebars, not behind, and it has a Preston Petty rear fender and tail light. The pics that Bob has posted in the beginning of this topic shows a bike with an original rear fender and tail light as supplied by KTM. Often bikes that were converted to Enduro trim by dealers utilized the Enduro kit which often offered a Preston Petty headlight and rear fender/tail light combination, but most complete KTM supplied bikes such as GS6 models had the previously mentioned fender/tail light combination with a Falk style rear fender. If it was that 250 from Atlanta it looks like there was a serious irregularity in that the bids have been mysteriously wiped out and it was being offered at more than 3x the buyer's cost so it seemed.

I would just imagine that someone made the seller an offer and he cancelled all of the bids and ended the auction, since it didn't look like it would meet the high reserve. I have seen this happen a lot. Mike

Mike thanks for the DC link on the chain guard . I am going to hold off and try and find an original guard because the bike is so original and nice and clean . Maybe someone who is going to restore a bike and will have to paint the guard to match the rest of the bike will part with one or maybe someone will have one in the garage in a box of parts. Im in no rush.
Again thank you Mike
