Title: magneto wire
Post by: harrO on April 14, 2010, 06:49:19 PM
What size wire should be used from the magneto to the connector block  on a '69 steel tank? Any electricians out there? Thanks.  HO

18 gauge will be fine or you can use 16 if you want.  I wouldn't go larger than 16 though.  Use automotive wiring available in auto stores (small spools), it will look original and flex better.  Have fun!

When gaging electrical wire, the larger the number, the smaller the diameter.  ie. 18 gage is a smaller diameter than 16 gage wire.  Electricity flows like water; the larger the diameter, the easier the flow.  Resistance increases from too small diameter or too long of run.  I used 75 feet of 6 gage electrical wire to run to my garage to use items like (220)arc welder, (220)mig welder, (220)air compressor, power tools, garage door opener, lights, et.al.   Take Kip's advice....   Joe
