Title: Once again a Penton owner
Post by: Bob Bean on April 26, 2010, 09:04:54 PM
Well, my First penton was a 68 steel tanker. one of the first batchs sold. My 2nd one was aquired back in 87. A 74 1/4 white tank 400 with only 340 miles on it.  Had to let it and my 76 250 Penton go in 2001 when we had to move our shop.  Barry Higgins and Kirk Cannelli were very lucky people then....  2 show room mint conditions Pentons..

After riding last years ISDT reunion ride and meeting a ton of old friends and future new friends, it got me wishing I had never sold them..    So the hunt  began for another Penton.   Today, I picked up a decent condition 74 250 harescrambler.  I have to check numbers to make sure.

It had sat for years, as the owner could never get it started without push starting it.   Today, went there and we mixed up some fresh gas for it.  Tickled till she leaked.  Choke on.  one primer kick.  Fired right up on the 2nd kick..   The old owner just about fainted...     I told him, it was just an aquired trait from an old Husky/penton rider...   Stonger right leg you know...<G> Jap riders never could get the hang of it... LOL..

Ran good.  little lean on bottom.  Shifts good.  Shocks suck.
some RM shocks on it ..  They modified the Swing Arm to lay down the shocks.  So gonna have to do some repair there. Front forks need re-done. The clutch drags a little.
also needs a air cleaner, fenders, new cables and a few other odds and ends.  No trailer queen here for sure...

But a good strong base to start with...  Just hope I can find the time to do the things it needs so I can ride it this year..
My wife already complains she dont see me that much..

Took pictures today, will try and post them tomorrow, when I get them downloaded.

Bob.

ps,
what was that frame color paint ?
LOL

looks like a good bike, you might think about replacing the things that need to be changed and don't worry so much about paint... If the motor is in good shape the very least you need to do is replace the seals... Believe it or not, pulling the motor down to do a full inspection can be done on a Saturday... Another thing to look at is wheel bearings and the steering head bearings too... Then once it is in good mechanical shape go ride it, then next winter do a full restore.

Hello,  You have acquired a very nice 74 Penton!  The layed-down shocks are very period correct for about 1975-1976 and later.  It was a common suspension modification for the fast guys.  If you do not like the look, and would prefer the more stock look, you might consider removing the lower shock mount, but maintain the swing arm added bracing.  I believe that might be a current swing arm modification.  Someone did a good job fabricating it.   joe

That is nice!  Looks like you could just bolt on some good shocks in the correct location and you'd be ready to go.  Checking the wheel bearings is a good idea. On my desert fresh 250 I had a bear of a time getting the axle's out. After clean up I followed some of the POGer's adviced and reassebled with a lite coat of anti-seize compound.

The MX versions without lights had a pickle end pipe, and the Enduro versions usually had the large shrouded end pipe with the chrome tip. Maybe someone swapped the pipe, or it may have even came that way. Nothing was ever set in stone, but from the look of the bracket under the tank, that is the right year pipe, just the MX version. Hey Bob, thanks for posting the pictures!  There is one of the large enduro pickle pipes on ebay right now.  Looks pretty nice but somewhat expensive.  Seller will accept offers however.  Just type "Penton Pipe" into ebay if interested.  Regards, John

Bob,

Would you be interested in swapping that MX pipe for the correct enduro pipe?  You may not see this till after ISDTRR but let me know if interested.

Hi Larry,
I think this pipe is the better performer, from what I hear,
and thats the one that came on it and it is in perfect shape, so I best just keep it on there.

I have an early '74 red tank 250 HS and it has the MX pipe, but the silencer end had been broken off and replaced with one similar to ones I have seen on Hodaka's. The sound of the MX pipe combined with the less weight is hard to beat! Mike
