Title: Another gas question
Post by: Mike Hufnagel on July 05, 2010, 07:36:04 AM
I normally use 100% Sunoco 110 unleaded race gas @ 40:1 For some reason I left the lid off the gas can (got distracted I guess). Did'nt mix the oil yet, but the cap was off for about 5-7 days. Think it would be ok to use or do I dump it in my truck?

Whenever, I'm in doubt, I would dump the gas in my old 71 chevy pickup.  Just sold the p/u last week, so I can't do that anymore.  I never run unleaded in my 6-day or 250.

Hello Mike,  Where was the gas can stored?  I would be concerned about the temperature at which the gas has been exposed to for the past week.  If it was outside in the sun cooking off all the organic compounds, better pour it into the truck gas tank.  If the gas can was sitting in a ventilated garage or in the shade, I would recommend using the fuel.  This is my logic.   It would be no different than leaving the premix in your motorcycle gas tank with a vented gas cap.   We do that all the time....   Also, local caves have a year-round temperature of about 55 degrees.  I assume the underground gas tanks have a similar temperature.  It has been about 80 locally, so that is only 25 degrees higher temperature which the gas was exposed to if stored in shaded areas. It was stored in a corner of  my garage so no real heat or sun got to it. It's about maybe no more than 10' cooler in the garage then ambient temp. So I probably will use it.

Besides at $6+ a gallon I don;t really want to dump it in my truck. My TRL 200 or lawn mower maybe. Then again how many lawns could I cut with 6 gallons of race gas?

PS.

With Mid ohio coming up next weekend and I don't have the Penton completed as of this minute (hopefully no later than tonight) I;m getting a little worried about the last minute BS

I have used straight (high octane) racing gas in the lawnmower when I had run out of regular gas before the yard was finished.  It really cuts through the deeper grass without bogging down.

Probably lost some Toluene from the mix. This light aromatic evaporates fairly quickly.  I would probably add 10oz Toluene and run it.  OR,  Better yet just go get some more and mix it together and it will be fine.
IMO,
