What year is this - did'nt they make real helmets by then ?

The bike looks like the prototype 250 that was raced in Europe in 1971 & 1972. It was brought to the US in the later part of 1972 and Jack Penton rode it in a couple of MX races.

Jack and Dane would know more about it and provide more details.

I went to the KTM web site and clicked on the history selection. In selecting the year 1970, this photo appears and there is a caption stating that Manfred Klerr wins Austrian National Championships on newly developed 250cc bike.

So, since the 250's were not available to buy until 1973, this is a prototype bike that was being raced to sort the "bugs" out.

Also, they didn't start making "real" helmets until 1971.
