Title: Transport/storage from Iowa east...to Maine
Post by: bkinnon on August 29, 2010, 10:13:33 AM
Pulled a really dumb move yesterday. I have been watching the '68 Berkshire on ebay. I have bought a lot of bikes on ebay over the past 12 years and have seen just one other steel tank Berkshire. I wanted that other one so bad, but timing wasn't right. I thought this bike was going to be snapped up by Powersnipers, and I watched it click down to 1 minute. I had no plan to bid, just watch. At 30 seconds, I threw in a bid just to watch the sniping ring it up. It didn't, and I won. I just bought a '68 Berkshire in Iowa, and had no intention of winning. $1000 for it too.
I will be glad to have it and line it up with its bigger brothers, but I have no idea on getting it picked up, much less getting it here. All of the questions a responsible buyer asks up front were not asked. I will do anything possible to keep from paying a commercial shipper more than the bike is worth to get it here. I have a couple of acquaintances who have trucking companies, but I will need some time to arrange it. I am not opposed to a long drive west, but would like to make it as feasible as possible. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for any consideration,
Bill

Bill, I suppose it's not for me to say, but I'd give Joe Murphy a call.

Try:  uship.com
or find someone headed this way.
I did the same thing with a Tyran just before Mid Ohio, turned out I was the only bidder, but got it shipped on a pallet for $150 . Less than $250 for a really nice Tyran. Doesn't happen often, but some times you just luck out.

Yeah, I once made a ebay bid on a '70 Penton, with the belief I never had a chance to win it. Before the auction ended I took off for a long weekend of racing. When I got back home and checked my emails, for sure - "CONGRATULATIONS YOU WON".
Oh #@*!, now I had to drive to Minneapolis to pick it up. [:0]
Great thing about it was, he also had a few more Pentons stuck away - so I came home with three.

The bike is in Coralville, IA. I am not sure if this auction was a scam. I have sent two emails for an address and info, I have not heard from the seller at all. There was no feedback, and little seller info on the auction page. I have not paid for it yet, and have contacted ebay for his contact info. Could be a newbie, but I am suspicious. Thanks for the offer and feedback. I will keep everyone posted.

Well I finally heard from the Berkshire owner. He assumed the bike wasn't going to sell as there were no bids, and left on his honeymoon without checking the auction. For many reasons,I am not going to buy this steel tank, so if anyone here wants it for the $1000 winning bid, let me know. He seems to be a regular guy, and is hoping to complete the transaction, but understands if I just say no.
Joe, thank you for your offer to help. Much appreciated.
