Title: '73 Jackpiner - Look Honey what I bought!
Post by: Dale Fisher on September 04, 2010, 05:09:19 PM
Another Penton has been rescued from most certain doom.  I may have gone beyond my comfort zone with the latest treasure which now calls my garage it's home.  It was originally purchased at Suzuki Ann Arbor, Mi. in March '73 for $1,000.  His daughter was selling what appears to be a low mileage machine given the Metzler tires still have some of the nubs showing.  The tank is pristine with only one tiny chip at the bottom. Everything else is another story.  With the bike came an owner's manual, parts list, almost three years worth of Keeping Track newsletters, some Penton patches, and an Amal conversion kit.  Anyone know a good psychiatrist?

Hey Dale,
That's not bad at all, a bit rusty, but looks like it has'nt been ridden much.
It's a seat breather frame, correct ?
I'm sure it originally would have had a RH metal number plate, and metal heat shield on the pipe - in place of the side panel.
By the looks of the earlier front fender bracket on a plastic fender (which I've never seen before, but kinda cool) - it may have had
 aluminum fenders as well.
You will probably tell when you take the fenders off - if they were drilled and mounted by the average individual, you'll may
find evidence they don't look as clean as from the factory.
Anyway, cool man - nice 'Piner. :D

Ron,

i have that same patch and it is in an origional Made in England  "Wassell" clear bag made to size for the patch,
could this be the Wassell/Penton Crest ??
great patch any how !!!

Dale,
great project,
that fluid mark across the flywheel looks more like old pre-mix,
most likly the fuel taps leaked and filled the bottom end with pre-mix and then it finally made it's way past the r/crank seal to fill that side and what you see is the residue left from the oil ??
just a thought !!
i would rather see that then rust from the cases being filled with water !!

good luck,
keep a few progress pics coming,
regards,

Mike Gallagher, NJ.

Dale, Be thankful that the oil level was 1/2 in the mag cover.   My new (non-Penton) Sachs related motorcycle has 1/2 water level in the trans and mag cover.   Not sure what the water level is in the crankcase, yet.  Need to remove the cylinder and that is not fun with stuck rings.  When is a deal not a deal?   joe

Big Mike,
I have always just considered this a early Penton Crest?  Maybe Dane could pitch in...

Mike,

I think it is old premix on the flywheel but I bet it came through a bad crank seal.
