Title: Bing 54-1 Slide Question

So in talking to Bing, I've found that the slide for my Bing (1975 KTM MX) is only made on a limited production type basis and goes for about $125-$150. I've found a number of slides that mic out to be the same, or appear to be, the only real difference I can see is in that the cutout/hole on the bottom side of the slide that is for the choke slide isn't there. Has anyone attempted it, or does anyone know if it's possible to just have the hold machined out of the bottom of a slide with the right channels for the choke slide? My intent is to keep the Bing on the bike, not looking to go Lectron or Mikuni. Least NOT YET!

 Iam going to do the same on my slide for a 30mm Bing, just make sure that the intake angle is the same on the new slide.  I ran the ISDTRR at Tulsa with a BMW slide and had no choke or idle and it worked fine.

Yes you can. But be careful with the taper on the slide since that will affect jetting if you plan to use another slide altogether.

Sounds good, will do. So not knowing what's considered acceptable and what would constitute needing to replace, I thought I'd just go ahead and post the pix of my slide and see if I could get some feedback. Maybe a 1-10 rating? My gut says replace but maybe it's not as bad as I'm making it out to be?

My Slide on my 250 had alot more scuffs on it than yours and after I changed the Needle Jet, Jet Needle, Idle jet and main jet the bike works flawless.

Does your carb have a tickler?  Even when my carb was all messed up, with the ticker, It started right up.  I was wondering why you would even bother with a choke.

I agree with Larry that the slide looks pretty good...As for the choke system, it might not be needed to start the bike, but it sure is handy if you ride enduros and come up on a long section with high, constant RPMs...like a fire road or paved section. You can apply the choke slightly to keep from seizing the motor. The instructions in a manual I have says to apply the choke (at speed) untill the motor blubbers and back it off a hair till it clears up....Just remember to change it back at the end of that section.

In emergencies, or on long road sections,and you don't have a choke, you can hit the kill switch and it will lube the 2 ST top end also.

Great info, thanks guys. I did/am replacing the needle Jet, Jet Needle, Idle jet and main jet so if all goes according to plan, we'll be in good shape. Oh, and yes, the carb does have a tickler. That's a new concept... What's that all about? Just hold it till gas seeps out the overflow before trying to fire it up? What's the purpose, simply to fill the bowl? Curious as to why newer bikes don't have such a thing in comparison.
