Title: D&R Cycle in Westminster CA
Post by: desmond197 on November 08, 2010, 06:15:25 AM
I bought a Jackpiner tank on ebay a couple weeks ago. It is riveted like a Metco Penton tank and has D&R Cycle painted on the tank. I know this shop used to sell Monarks. Any info on Penton history of this shop?

My cousin bought a '72 Jackpiner out of SoCal a few years ago that had a riveted tank, but no shop decal.

Tom White would know. He and his brother worked the parts counter of a Westminster cycle dealer around '70. Ask him.

This tank has Sponsored by D&R Cycle hand painted on the tank sign painter style.

I use to ride my Sting Ray Bike to Collins and Sons for parts.  I think they were in Fullerton or Anaheim.  Westminster wouldn't have been that much farther and I never heard of them.

Victor Monz had rivets around his tank.  I figured he just made it that way.

6 Day tanks had a habit of splitting so the folks at Metco put rivets on the edges of the tanks where the two parts were joined together. I do not know how well it works but it looks trick as we used to say.

The rivets worked well.

At that time, most Jackpiners were being used for desert racing. I suspect that the tank originally belonged to someone racing District 37. They were the only real Orange County Penton shop and I remember them from purchasing a new head for my bike since my other had cracked in half at Viewfinders Grand Prix at Indian Dunes (out by what is now Magic Mountain).

I sold a riveted Penton tank on ebay about 5 years ago.
It came on a bike I picked up in Southbay.
I already had another nicer tank and thought the riveted one was somebody's attempt at a repair job.
Got this cylinder and head on the same bike.
Maybe a Metco? Notice the carb mounting flange? It's bored to 30mm and blends nicely into the intake port. Somebody did a good job on it.
The bike would be really fast if it wasn't hauling my 235lbs.
