Title: 74 Harescrambler Differences?
Post by: Tim McKinney on November 11, 2010, 03:02:08 PM
Hi guys, can anybody tell me if there is a difference motor wise between a 74 HS that is set up for MX vs. the ones set up for Enduro etc. with the larger tank and lights etc. or are the motors the same? Thanks for all the knowledge.

Not really in the motor.  The two different pipes changed the power a bit and some enduro guys timed the ignition a bit different but all in all the motors were the same.

Tim, the enduro's were set up with more Deck heigth and of course the MX bikes had first gear locked out. so they are just a 5 speed

Of all the KTM engines that I have owned, I have yet to find one that actually had the first gear blocked out. All have been 6 speeds, even though they could have had the first gear blocked. I think it was very rare to have that done from the factory, or maybe it was more common for it to be changed before the bike was sold if they were blocked from the factory. Mike

I had two 74 Penton 250's, one with the MX pipe, one w/enduro pipe.  I could not believe the difference in power with the MX pipe.  It was pipey and would wheelie extremely easily.

My 74.5 HS has 5 speeds.  The bike was origianlly owned by Rick Walsworth out of Buck's Cycle in Valparaiso, Indiana, and he raced pro motocross with it, so I suppose he and dad changed it for that purpose.

I wonder if it has something to do with what coast they were shipped to, on the west coast I have never seen one that did not have 1st gear blocked out.. my MC5 came as a 5 speed. In fact I was disappointed when I found it didn't years later I found out that all of those motors had 6 gears and that first was blocked out and would be too low for any use on a MX track... so I quess I am not disappointed anymore.
