Title: Bolt/screw under crankcase
Post by: Mike Hufnagel on November 24, 2010, 10:13:15 AM
There is a small bolt on the bottom of my 250 crankcase that appears to be in line with the crank, (directly in the middle) I am assuming that this bolt/screw is a crank case drain bolt. That I can drain the crank in case of flooding (water or gas). Am I right on this ? Or is it something else?

I flooded it pretty good when finally hooking up a mikuni (floats were way off & hopefully corrected now)

Regardless of the bolt function, most suggest that any bolt which has not already been removed, be either left alone or removed with extreme caution.  Stripped threads is not what anyone would want on their vintage motorcycle.  Magnesium and Aluminum are more of a problem because of the oxidation.   Sorry I am not familiar with that specific bolt function.   I suggest you leave any bolt in place until you know for sure what it's function is, and unless it extracts easily, otherwise wait until a convenient time to remove it in case a thread repair needs to be done.  On some engines, removal of a oil drain plug "looking" bolt can release the kick-starter recoil spring.   Joe

Mike

You are correct, it is a drain bolt for the crank area.  I use it to check for corrosion when shopping for KTM engines.  If removed, don't lose the gasket when reinstalling.Ciao!

Forgot!  It should be a small allen head with gasket under it directly beneath the crank.

Kip is quite right, but do be careful putting it back in, it is pretty easy to strip out because it feels like it is not straight under crank, I stripped mine here ealier this year and I was able to Helicoil it.. it is trick though because it is right underneath one of the crank halves and once instaled you need to be able to break off the little tang that allows you to install the coil, careful because you do want that inside the crank area..
I flooded my bike here a couple weeks ago I removed that screw and out came at least a cup of fuel, I had left the petcock on over night...

Thanks to all!!!

Thats a relief!!!! I remember back in the day while drag racing a Yamaha TZ and trying to figure out a proper set up for some Lectron carbs from scratch. The crank case would fill up & the expansion chambers would flood. Wish I had a drain plug back then.
