Post by: firstturn on November 30, 2010, 10:08:52 AM
This week Big Mike will under go some very serious surgery on his shoulder to be followed up in some 8 weeks later with neck surgery.  It involves a on the job injury and has been very painful for Mike.  Please keep him in your Prayers and help him get through this tough process of healing.

Hi to all my wonderful POG family,

i am home from the hospital, still a bit groggy and the nerve block to the rotator is wearing off, now the true pain is setting in !!!
hopefully the percocets will do the job !!

i am told the rotator cuff is a slow painful recovery, if anyone can give me a few pointers on the recovery details i would be grateful,

OK, i want to thank each and everyone of you guys for the warm thoughts and prayers, this is a great family of brothers and sisters !!!

i will keep everyone in the loop as to how my recovery is progressing and then the cervical spine surgery to follow,

   thanks again,
  regards,

Mike Gallagher, NJ.

Mike, Like I told you before. Do what you're told. Do nothing with that arm. Listen to the physical therapist. And at this time of the year, don't even think about walking anywhere near ice. Sounds dumb, but one of the guys I was doing PT with just went to get the mail and slipped at the end of his driveway. He tore everything apart and had to go back in for surgery. Let other people help you.
Meanwhile, The Husky is bankrupting me!!

Well, I'm a potter so rotators and carpel tunnel problems are the cost of the trade. We all get together from time to time to show off the new scars.

Physical therapy is what it is all about. Do exactly what they say, no more or no less, and communicate. There is the right pain and there is the wrong pain, so talk through it until you are both on the same page. And the good news is that the pain will pass one day (and not a day too soon ).

I agree 100 percent! My left pec was severed from my shoulder and upper arm bicep area and surgery/recovery was long and painful. I was actually scared when I started rehab because I worried that I would tear the repair apart.  My pHysical therapist(who is also an amputee and in good shape)reassured me and got me started safely. He kept me focused through the pain and soreness. They know works-there is a lot science and good medicene in rehab.

Ditto to the above, Big Mike.  I've had great rehab guys for both my knees.  Trust their instructions and limits.  After a while it will be tempting to "push" the limits but listen to these people.  They know what they're talking about.  When the time is right, they'll move you to the next square.
God bless, bro!

HI Mike been talking to the guys that have torn there's you need to stay on that ice machine that pumps COLD water to the pack that is wrapped around your shoulder and don't move it for a week. You need something stronger than what you are taking the guys hear used morphine or demoral tablets watch out you don't get hooked. As soon as you feel better start your physical therapy ASAP not like here Mike my friends got there's cut from 30 to 6 not enough! I work in industry were it is easy for just about any type of injury but most of the ones are knee and shoulder. To bad Conan the Barbarian in are state rely put it to us and now we can't even get any real help when we get hurt the best thing is don't get hurt at work! Take care Mike,Ed

Hey guys,

it's been just over 1 week since the surgery,
i go back to the Dr's on the 15th,
lets just say i didn't realize how much pain one could indure,
i hate the meds because they bring me to a dark space from my past so i use them spareingly !!!
i just suck it up and try to keep my mind off the pain, alot of this can be a mental thing if you don't take control of yourself !!

OK, i want to thank everyone again for the great advice and your support and Prayers.

regards,

Mike Gallagher, NJ.

Mikey,
From another Irishman to you, don't mean this to sound weird or "too much info" for this column, but the pain meds stopped me up like a bag of quick-dry cement.  I weaned myself off them as fast as I could,  lived with the pain during the day and took half a pill at night to knock the edge off so I could sleep...and when I took the half pill I also took a stool softener which helped a lot.  Don't mean to get overly graphic...and it may not affect you that way...but it sure made me miserable!  Hope you ain't!

Mike,
Passing along some medicine (humor)

Seems 2 Irishmen were shipwrecked and floating in the Atlantic in a rowboat, something floats past the bow, fellow pulls it into the boat, turns out to be a magic lamp. He rubs it, the genie pops out and declares, "OK fellows, one wish." Irishman in the rear says "turn
this bloody ocean into beer!" "Done" says the genie, snapping his fingers.
First fellow turns around, looks at his partner and says, "Great! Now we have to piss in the boat!"

Ho Ho Ho to all of us Pentonites.

Hey guys - HAPPY NEW YEAR -

Tony this is too funny, i was going to update this post this evening,

last Wed. the Dr. told me not to ware the air cast/sling anymore and to start Phy. Therapy,

today was my 1st day of therapy, they just looked things over and did measurements on how far i could move the arm, at this point i only have about 10% movement, they say i have a long way to go to build the strength back, now the fun begins - OUCH - 3 days a week until i get back to full capacity, hopefully by the summer !!

OK, i want to thank every one who has given me the support and prayers to tackle this endevor, you are a great family !!!

regards,

Mike Gallagher, NJ.

Mike,
It's good to hear about the positive progress! Remember that this is a slow process and not to rush things past what the doctor recommends. Thanks for the update. BTW I won the MX3 ad. Mike
