Too much of a good thing? I think NOT!
I had no idea i had so much money just laying around in my shop, guys like this come and go, over the years I have bought very little on e bay for this very reason, I seem to do alot better with dealing my my friends who treat me right. And in return I try to do right by them too...

Just like bikes, asking and getting is 2 different things. If it does not sell; and these items probably won't, it is just a mental exercise not a statement on REAL prices.

I have some magazines published by Penton publishing. They're all about the latest in high-volume food processing. Good shape except for the corn oil stains and confetti from the trade show. I'll take $10 gazillion for the lot.
Some are obviously in it for the money... period!
I have purchased some items from this seller at reasonable prices from time to time. They must think that some things are made of gold while others are just run of the mill. There is no rhyme or reason to their pricing. Mike

A dirty seat base for $400. The seller is what they would reffer to as an "utter prat" in Great Britain.
I just don't like when people set their prices to an unrealistic value just because there are few pieces around. That's blackmailing and a certain way to make the customer unhappy and left with a feeling of having been cheated.
Everytime I see this stuff it causes me to go into panic mode, throw a couple of more chains and locks on the bikes and start adding up my new found wealth. The closer it gets to race day, sanity prevails and all caution is thown to the wind.
I often wonder about those guys that came out to Barstow from Texas (Austin)last year and "picked" all those vintage bikes. They picked about 50 CZ's Penton's, Can-Ams, Huskies, Bultaco's, Ossa's Montessa's, Sach's, DKW's, KTM's. I think, as I recall, Their e-bay site was something along the lines of My trash your treasure. They had so many bikes, they needed a Semi and a huge 5th wheel flat bed to haul them back.
I've been checking their store and haven't really ssen anything for sale that they picked up. So, I figured Ron C got it all.
They Posted a notice on the POG Site "Bike hauling from Austin to Barstow" or something like that. At these prices they had a million bucks worth.

I sell on ebay, and hopefully I'm not one of the bad guys, but things are about to change for online buyers and sellers alike... for the worse. Thanks to a hidden element of our president's new healthcare bill, we now have the new 6050W Tax Law. Starting January 1st 2011, anyone that does over 200 online banking sales transactions per calendar year, of over $20,000.00 in online banking sales per calendar year, now has their info submitted directly to the IRS. Experts anticipate a mass departure of garage-seller types away from ebay and other websites. What does it mean? ...less product available, which drives prices even higher. Bad for the seller and buyer alike... everyone pays more. Crazier yet, starting in 2012, anyone that sells something for more than $600.00, online or not, will be required by law to submit a 1099 for each transaction, for all 50 States. This law is so crazy that experts claim that the added paperwork will put many small businesses out of business. We all pay our taxes, but soon everyone will be under the microscope. No... I did not vote for him either!
I would propose some rather restrictive rules (covenants?) on the ownership (stewardship, make that) of certain items, Penton motorcycles and parts among them, some solemn oath that must be sworn in blood before any transaction involving this stuff. It could quite easily kill the true enjoyment of Penton bikes if the spares market were to be cornered by base profiteers. I confess, I have bought stuff from E-bay-hemoth, but it almost never "felt right". Posting a for sale or wanted on POG is like dealing with family, a statement which I am totally unqualified to make being so new to the group maybe. Whatever, half the time I'm on Ebay it's just to rescue some stuff from the hands of infidels. I can imagine my garage if I had unlimited funds.
Yikes Reverend! ...how do you really feel?

In a nutshell... it affects everyone that sells and accepts PayPal payments for selling over 200+ items per calendar year, or that sells and accepts PayPal payments for $20,000.00+ of merchandise per calendar year. Word has it that Ebay will lose tons because of the PayPal connection and Craigslist will grow for just the opposite reason. Only time will tell I guess.
The government will make criminals out of us all. How many large businesses have resorted to underhanded practices? It's just a matter of time before it trickles down to us small fish. In my small construction business I have to jump through so many hoops its ridiculous while here in Chattanooga Blue Cross/Blue Shield was able to build on a historic Civil War sight. We have way too much government and way too many lobbyists backed with unlimited budgets.
I spent a major part of my life tracking the punks, tyrants, and garbage of the world and we have allowed them into our wire. They are in our DOJ and the WH and they do not believe in the Constitution and American values. They have even stated that numerous times. Gentlemen, theywant to JAIL us for not buying health insurance! They are hiring and training thousands of new "agents" at the IRS to terrorize Americans and I believe we haven't seen anything yet from the unaccomplished community organizing punks. They are coming after the "underground economy" and anything that raises a "flag" on a 1040 will trigger an audit. They will start looking at the E-bay transactions and I think they will start tearing apart these flea markets and swap meets where cash trades hands with little to no paperwork. And gentlemen, the left wants new "value added taxes(VAT)" on goods, services, and transactions so we can be "just like Europe". They look at the hundreds of millions of ebay and swap meet transactions and wring their evil greedy hands like the weasel on a Foghorn Leghorn Warner Brothers cartoon.
Anyway, I realize this isn't a political site but you know, Pentons and motorcycling are about freedom and American values and enterprise. The restorations you all do are awe inspiring and I'm afraid the Marxists are coming after one of the vehicles that makes obtaining parts easier: the Internet/E-Bay. God only knows what plans they have for speech and total control of the net after Wilkileaks...
Anyway gentlemen,in the spirit of the Sons of Liberty and Issac Sears, keep your powder and vintage motorcycles dry.
Taxes are what keeps this country running. I am not for more paperwork, small and large business already have more than enough. If we could simplify the tax codes we would not need all the IRS agents. I have no problem with sales tax being collected on internet transactions. Come on, we pay taxes on everything we buy in a store why should internet sales be banned? Make it simple though, let Ebay collect and report it, after all they are profiting from the transactions.
When you cheat, you are just saying your not willing to completely support this country financially. Why over 20K, why not all sales?
Ok guys let fly!

I am all for this country but when is enough enough? I hunt and find this stuff, pay money for it, haul it, sort it, research it, store it, sometimes clean it up, take pictures of it, write up the auction, answer questions, invoice it, package it, sometimes make a box for it, and ship it. Then the government wants a piece of it and they want me to keep track of it all for them? The same government already gets the biggest chunk of our checks than ever before in history and wastes more than they ever have. I love this country but I have no doubt in my heart that if the founding Fathers could see where we are they would say, "We must revolt."

Thanks Mark P. for your post. I know that you are wearing a badge and your job is to protect. You see the people everyday that refuse to conform and will break into my house for $10 and tear up $5000 just to be mean. Thanks for wearing the badge and protecting us. I for one just wish the people we send to Washington would not spend what they don't have?? Sounds simple to me....but after all I am a simple person that lives in a simple State (Texas).

Mark P is 2000% correct. Larry is correct also. I personally am Incorporated and have a CPA, FEIN#, State Sales Tax#, and pay state & federal income tax on my sales, so its business as usual for me. However, in the vintage motorcycle community, hobbyists will ultimately be affected the most by this new law. Many of these sellers that are collecting online payments as supplemental income will simply go away... it doesn't matter where they sell online, if they collect money electronically, they're included. My guess is that vintage motorcycles & parts are going to get way harder to find, which will drive prices much higher. Mark P is right on something else too... VMD and other swap meets will be next. You can bet that it's coming sooner than later! Our current government is taking the nut & bolts of vintage motorcycling to a whole new level... one that really sucks. TG
Loop holes and alternatives are bound to arise.
I work for a Corvette parts wholesale supplier that also sets up at 5-6 Corvette shows each year with 5000+ parts and sells retail at those shows. We already have to collect state tax at 2/3 of those shows because of the enforcement of tax laws. Soon they will enforce the others, one of which is a 10% tax. It is hard enough to maintain enough sales at the smaller shows because since we are a smaller company with less overhead, we sell for less than the bigger guys, which some have backed out of shows because of the tax enforcement and only distribute catalogs and take orders at the shows, while we bring a semi trailer and displays chocked full of parts. Hog wash, if you had to sit and write that tax check every 1/4 or every year your view would be a bit different. What they (the media and Government) do is convince people that those evil rich people are getting money given to them by extending the Bush era tax rates because they are "not paid for" WTF? It is our money first until we are extorted out of it "for the common good", funny lots of people are in jail for the same activity only it was called racketeering for private folk. Social Secrurity is nothing more than a scheme like Bernie Mahdoff pulled, he's doing 150 years, the federal government is now thinking up more ways to tax (rob) us by way of using force under the tax codes to make us buy healthcare?
One last thing, those evil rich people that are wrecking the county by making money are the ones that hire people, not some guy making 20k a year and living on Government cheese.
Cut income taxes or use flat taxes, freeze and cut Government spending 10% across the board and the budget is balanced by 2018.
