That appears to be a 1980 420 MC80 KTM that obviously needs a lot of work. Hard to put a value on it in parts. Mike

Stephen,
If you go to ebay and search under "completed auctions" for the individual pieces then you can see what other parts have attracted. You will need to pay very careful attention to condition, and account for the fact that it is only a rough guess since lots of factors affect why someone is willing to enter a transaction, and many of them are not necessarily rational and therefore not good predictors. Forget about "buy it now" asking prices they are useless for this purpose-- you want completed transactions.:D
Factor in whether you want to disassemble, pack, ship, list, deal with emails, complaints, questions, etc. It will take a little time but your own research will lead you to about as good a guide as anyone else and within the limitations stated above it will be verifiable. It goes without saying that the sum of these prices do not equate to the value of a partially disassembled bike in the yard, which I'd expect to be lower by a wide margin. Good luck!:)

Looks to be fairly complete, minus tank and seat. Make someone a nice project start, or you could parts it out. It's probably worth more in parts than as a whole, unless you find someone who wants that particular unit. If I was more into the "big bore" units, I'd take a shot at it, but it doesn't fit in my group.
I'll start. $400 and I can pick it up Saturday morning.

Take the $400 and run. Bought my '79 420 for $200, motor all together and ran good once old gas drained out. Original bore, tight. This pipe a lot better though, but mine had a gas tank. Guy had it on Craigslist 2 months, started at $500.
GREAT evo bike and great power, a favorite now. Just won't bring a lot of $s when race ready and all sorted, so tough to start with too much in it.
Wow !! so whats the story with the 1980 250 that went for $3500 on the eeee- bay:D guess he should have paid.......????
Richard you have e-mail...Thanks-

Big Mac, Your story of the 1979 KTM 420 for $200 is similar to mine. I bought a 1973 Penton 125 with "locked engine" on Ebay. I made an 18hr round trip to pick it up, spend a night in a hotel, and it took me two days. I had to disassemble the bike to put it in the car trunk and back seat. The ignition side cover was missing, so I thought I'd just squirt a little WD-40 in the spark plug hole to lube the "rusty" cylinder. I grabbed the motoplat, and with a little twist, the engine rotated over. The seller's jaw dropped about a foot. As always, whenever a bike is not running, the buyer takes a BIG chance on the purchase. Locked up can mean an engine disaster, too. Joe
$600.00 $500 bucks takes it with or w/o delivery to this year's VMD @ Mid-Ohio. Yup...free delivery to VMD!
It's a great bike with really good usable power...you'll love it when you get it done and dialed in. Great for MX or off-road.
I'd send the shocks off to Steve Marpes, and check with Flash at //www.sunriseKTM.com for a 420 core motor that's complete and see if you can trade this box-o-motor for parts credit, or find one off eBay if you can. Pipe looks salvageable and are hard to find/spendy. DC Plastics has tank skins and body parts. Won't take that much to get it done. My 495 came to me in worse shape with more missing parts.
Here's what you can look forward to--no more come-from-behind, pick off the easy backmarkers racing...

Hi MAC- Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement. If I can find the time I may keep it but I prefer the earlier CMF Pentons. I'm hoping someone in the POG will be interested in this 420. I think the price is right and I'm including delivery to this years VMD!
I was pitching it for your prospective buyers who need to get brave and step up! Free delivery? What a deal. Had to drive an hour each way to land my 420 project--twice.
Time to stop toe draggin. Here's all the rest you need to bring a super KTM back to Maico-slayer and have spare parts to boot... from Mark's Vintage Swapmeet:

KTM 1980 420 MX parts
What i have is mostly complete 1980 KTM 420MXer, i bought to restore, it had problems, so i pulled the motor out & basically lost interest in restoring it. I'd be interested in selling the whole
bike (apart) or just motor complete or broken down into parts, along with thing else as an assembly or in parts. I haven't taken pictures of anything yet , but if email me or call me.
1)Complete MX engine, this was a running engine, before i pulled it out. Transmission won't shift higher then 2rd gear, i believe it a shifting fork problem. Never split cases to find out what's what because the bike had many other bad parts not related to the engine,& i decide Not restore the bike because of this. $300 or b/o Motor has tight lower end bearings, good crank seals & good compression...parts part parts etc etc
See details at http://www.vintagemx.us/cgi-bin/swapmeet.cgi

Hi Mike, Yes it's available... You can e-mail me at
[email protected]
I might have a interest in the rolling bike as it sits along with the exhaust pipe and silencer for $200.00 The engine, carb, plastics etc and other items in the boxes you could keep and Ebay or sell to others to make up your price difference. Just a thought. Call me @ 724-757-1946 if you would like to discuss.
Thanks,
Bob
Thom Green- Call up old CanAm George (Beasley?) in Seattle and tell him to buy this 420 project and figure out how to ship it. He was interested in a deal on my 420 at April's race and looking high and low for one. Worth the shipping hassle to get it out west for a hard to find prize year and model.
Stephen,
I spoke with some other POG members and perhaps my offer can be sweetened a little. I have a possible taker for the engine parts and items that are not of interest to me so....maybe we can make something work. We will still need it brought to VMD, but can pay you in advance. Please contact me on my cell or email me at:
[email protected] so we can discuss.
Thanks,
Bob
