Title: Chain size
Post by: Michael Hickey on January 31, 2011, 03:37:03 PM
Can someone tell me the chain size I should be running on my Hare Scrambler? I now know that it is not a 520.

Thanks,
Michael

Michael,
What year Harescrambler? Some of the old ones could have had 530 on them. Most guys change them over to 520.

There are 520 and 530 sprockets.  Seems like in "The Day" we used to run Industrial 50 chain which was like 530 width I think.

my MC5 came with a 530 chain but several years ago I changed to a 520 chain, of course I changed the sprockets too,,, Al B was able to get me set up.. I have a rear sprocket that is a 525 but that is an odd duck and I have never seen another like..

I switched to a 520 on my 78 MC5 from 530. Remember to add a spacer on the countershaft sprocket!

Yea, several years ago I was looking for a new chain and found this 525 sprocket and then I found out that it was odd so I set it aside and bought a new set of sprockets and chain.
I just did some checking. I took a new chunk of 520 chain and checked it agains the stock sprocket(530), of course it was was too narrow and then I tried to put it on the 525 chain and it almost went on but not quite, it set about half way off the teeth.. I have no idea why I still have it, quess I have trouble letting go of things...From the look of that odd sprocket, it looks like it has been around for a long time so I figure that someone thought it might be a better choice than a stock chain and sprockets.. If I recall it use to be that a 520 was too small to handle the power of a 250 or bigger bike.
