Post by: Lloyd Boland on February 09, 2011, 09:16:03 PM
It is that time again for the SoCal contigency to show up at Glen Helen.  I hear bad weather is again forecasted: cloudy, low to mid 70's, 7 mph winds.  I expect to see Bill on the Penton, Chris on the KTM, Garrett on the KTM and Fred on the Penton to show up.  I hope Victor is feeling better and hopefuly we will see him again soon.

I hope all is well with you guys and hope to see you on Sunday.

Today, Feb.10, 2011, I woke up to our coldest day of Winter so far at minus two degrees, and minus ten wind chill.   This has been one of our most mild Ohio Winters in a long time.   I hope all you West Coast riders have a great time in that mid-70's season opener.  If you see Victor (an old Ohio boy) tell him Joe said "Hi".    Joe

Oh yea!!!! I clean forgot to post something on this race.  Good job Lloyd.  I'll be there.

After watching the news about the weather back east, I didn't want to say anything about the weather.

You know the guys laying out the tracks have been getting better and better.  They always amaze me on what they come up with.

Ric,
Schedule posted on americanretrocross.org.
Next race March 27 at Competitive Edge in Hesperia, then April 17 at Glen Helen.
Both are good tracks, both are usually prepared well for vintage, but I prefer Glen Helen.

The closest I ever got to racing in Socal was a place called Santa Maria,(a long time ago) a nice sand track. I loved the track, It had a drop off at the top of the hill that was nearly straight down, about as steep as the elevator shaft at Holister hills but three times longer.
In the first corner some knuckle head T boned me, Usually if I do not get a good start I head for the out side of the corner and I usually can pick off a bunch of guys that get tangled up in the first corner.. So here I am on the outside near the back of the crowd and this nut nails me... so I picked my bike up and started it and I get moving but I am way behind everyone else, part of the track got really dusty and I was trying to remember were the track went and all I could see was riders way up in front of me. so I made for the shortest route and wham! I am on the ground. I flew over the handle bars.. There was a fallen tree, about two feet thick and they cut a section out and the track ran thru it...It was just not my day... too bad too, cause it was in a cool place and I would had loved to go back. I am sure that track is gone now..

Thom,
Santa Maria is just north of Santa Barbara.  I never road up there or heard of any track that way.  What year did you ride there?  There was another pretty famous track called Baymare back in the day.  The track was on the edge of Moorpark.  Moorpark also had another track called Muntz Moorpark.  (I was told it was named after a local radio/sterio business, but never confirmed.) Both of these tracks, along with Indian Dunes, Saddleback and now Carslbad are all gone.  Too bad.
Hope you make it down south one day.

Hey Thom and Lloyd,Wasn't that Santa Maria track called Spillway Park or Spill way MX?
Lloyd,I'll probably opt for Glen Helen just cause the track looks so awesome in the pics.Is the Marty Tripes revenge thing happening at the ARX races or are they a seperate deal?Hope to get out for one soon before the heat sets in.Thanks for the info.

Here's the web site for the schedule http://www.americanretrocross.org/Schedule_Results.php
I use to like Competitive Edge more than Glen Helen, but the track prep has been so good at Glen Helen Since the Oct race,  I like them both.

This is the Competitive Edge Track Last Sept.

Another cool thing.  This year, the moto's have been pretty full.

Ric, I got an email from ARX indicating that the MT 100s will be at the Comp Edge races and maybe some other races once the TBA dates are cleared up.  Spillway MX was the name of the track in Santa Maria.

Ric,
I don't see anything for 3/19 or 3/20.  The next So. Cal. vintage race is 3/27 at Competitive Edge.  Web site again is http://www.americanretrocross.org/  It looks like the Marty Tripes 100cc Revenge Challenge will also be held at the same time.

They usually do a pretty good job at Comp Edge preparing the track.  I am not sure if I will be able to make this event due to sched conflict, but maybe.  I think Garrett will be there for sure.

Lloyd.

Later,
           Ric
P.S.-Regarding my last question, calvmx, marty's 100 revenge, and arx are different clubs and you guys do just the arx or both arx and calvmx?Which do you prefer? Thanks again.Ric

Ric,
The 3/12/11 race at Perris is a different group, CalVMX.  Good guys.  I think they usually run at Perris, Borona, some Glen Helen and maybe a couple other southern california tracks, more toward San Diego.  Hope to see you at either the 4/17 race at Glen Helen or the 5/22 race at Competitive Edge.

You may get 50 bikes on the line at Diamond Don's but there will probably only be 5-10 that are true 100cc machines. :D[8D][}:)][8D][xx(][:o)]    I know you guys will have a great time.  DD is the best!  :)[:p]:DWish I could be there ...[V]

Ric,,, Sorry about the late reply,,,,  Been busy workin and that is a good thing.

I only Race ARX and don't even look for any other race group to race with.  This is just a once a month fix to get the blood pumping.  I'm really pretty terrible and I find it alot safer to go once a month out to the track, than I do to ride out my front door.

Alot of the ARX guys race CalVMX.  Usally their races are on Saturday.  The Marty Tripes thing comes and goes whenever.  I don't know how the folks find out about those.

All I know is the ARX thing is a blast!  Good People, Tracks, and times.

The offer still stands if any POGers are in SoCal, call up and we'll do lunch or something.

Ric,
Penton fast guy Bruce McDougal will be there racing one of my 1983 YZ100. He is riding it till he gets his 100 Berkie ready. He says he rather ride the vintage class on a Penton and stop Tommy Croft on the Hodaka from winning the year end title:-)

The racing was fantastic today!  No rain, but a little windy cross wise of the track.  The 1st few times flying over the back jump the bike would get blown sideways.  I couldn't figure it out and thought maybe somewhere I bent the frame.

Anyways,  Lloyd, Bill L, and Myself all won.

You guys going to Diamond Don's will love the 100's

Ric, We were looking for ya!  Hope everything is OK.

I'm not sure who won the 100's. I was gated when they finished  All I know is Scott Burnsworth was in a couple of my races on a early Ossa 250.  He went by me so freekin fast in the toughest part of the track,  I wanted to pull over and watch.

No dis-respect to our Nation's Founding Fathers, but this is when I realized "All men are NOT created equal"  How do they do it????

It was kinda funny watching all the 100's start. The start was a long steep uphill, so they were slow to get rolling, but, after the 1st turn it was a long steep downhill and WHAM,  they were off to the races.

Alot of big names.  I actually wanted to go get some Autographs, but I figured this would look to stupid, A grown 54 year old man asking for Autographs.
