Title: petcock rebuild
Post by: harrO on February 16, 2011, 08:03:43 PM
I'm working on petcocks from a '69 steeltank. It's apparent the replacement 3 hole rubber washers are thinner (.011 in.)  than original. Will this be a problem or can I continue with the assembly?  Thanks for your attention...Harry

Harry
there is different thickness gaskets, but even with the right gasket there has to be enough spring pressure to make them seal. It drove me crazy with one set I had. I took them apart and put them back together ten times before I figured it out. I found a spring of the same diameter at the local hardware store and cut a piece just the right size and it fixed the problem. I have seen no mention of the petcock springs being worn out before on this forum, But I can say for a fact that it was the problem with a set that I had.

Doug...I guess what threw me were the three brass stubs positioned in the body of the petcock. They surely would scratch the rotating (lever) when using the thinner washer and cause more problems. Thanks for the tip on swapping out the spring but first I would have to shorten/grind those stubs. Do you recall the stubs I'm referring  to in any of your rebuilds? I'm sure they were absent on my first rebuild of another set. Thanks again for your input.  Harry

call Domi Racer and ask for a set of Italian petcock rebuild gaskets. They are the right thickness and will work great. With these, the little brass stubs won't stick out.

BBeck, Do you know if they make the gaskets for the large petcocks.. They look just like the petcocks on the Pentons but the gaskets are quite a bit larger...
