At least I'm starting to get the kinks worked out of this bike but have a clutch problem at the moment. It's not fully disengaging. You can feel it want to pull with the clutch lever pulled in and in gear. and I cannot even attepmt to start the bike in gear.
I got the bike on it's side and I am ready to go through the clutch to check for warpage, etc.
I did find an old post about setting up the clutch with a dial indicator and using synthetic atf. Would the ATF be the kind used in a Ford or a different car? (I know they uised to be different back in the day.
Any other tips that might help?
Also, If I do need clutch plates (fiber or steel) does anybody have any?
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
Chicago Jerry can line you out on the nut spring tension thing. But even dialed in the KTM motor is not primary kick and you can not start them in gear.

hi mike. good talking to you yesterday. stay in touch to let me know how that works....` chi jer
Jerry,
Worked out fine. Without taking the ez pull off yet, the drag is almost non existant, barley a hint. (sorry about the barley instead of barely, I used to brew beer).
But will do that next. but I have a slight other problem. Carb related though. See other topic.

PS.
The pull is a bit harder now, but no problems.
Thanks!

Typical issue for ez-pull owners. Very sensitive to adjustment. Synthetic ATF can help reduce clutch drag, it's a popular choice even for modern bikes.

But what type or would it matter? I remember there being several types of ATF. Found this online.
"There are several types: Dexron II, Dexron III, Type F, Mercon, Mercon V, Chrysler 7176 and several varieties of Chrysler ATF-Plus. All are "friction-modified" lubricants except Type F. Dexron II and Mercon have similar additive packages as do Dexron III and Mercon V"
Also what about bearing, gear wear & frequncy of changing the oil?
On my modern 300, I'm using Amsoil, I change the gear box alomst every other ride.

We always used Type "F" back in the day.

I'm flushing out my KTM300 gear box with some cheap ATF stuff for one ride, then I'll put in a higher end ATF. I don't worry about bearing or gear wear. Think about your truck or car, automactics have plenty of gears and bearings that run in the stuff for 100,000 miles+. Synthetic ATF is just that much better as it can withstand higher temps without breaking down. I change mine once or twice a year unless I suspect H2O contamination (like the guy on the home page).
