is there any way to test a tank coil. i have a 73 jackpiner . don't know if the coil is getting weak or what. used to be a one or two kick starter. now ten or fifteen kick hot or cold. the coil is a red wire coil. thanks for the help.

Have you checked and cleaned all of your ground connections, IE,. engine to frame mounts included? I run a separate ground wire from the engine to the coil mount bracket, so the ignition does not have to rely on a good engine to frame ground connection, which helps reliability a lot. Mike

I noticed the same thing last summer and I added an additional ground wire from the coil directly to the engine. spark color improved immediatly.. also I went to a fine wire spark plug that helped too.. these old ignitions need all the help we can muster.

Periodical removal and cleaning of the stator plate to engine case contact area behind the ignition stator is also good preventative maintenence. In the future, I plan on running a smaller extra ground wire directly from the stator plate to the coil ground bracket. Mike
