Title: What Did You Do To Your PENTON Today?
Post by: Dennis Jones on July 15, 2011, 01:35:05 PM
I want to start a thread where we can share/show off what we have done with our Pentons. It may be putting on new tires, painting your tank, ripping up a race track, or coming across that unobtainium part you've been searching for.

Post up what you've done and let's see if we can keep this on page one.

I'll start it off [8D]

My Jackpiner used to see a lot of AHRMA cross country and reunion ride action but has just been sitting lately and the carb clogged up. While I had it off to clean I got the idea to paint the engine center cases, while still in the bike[8]

I'm sure I could have pulled the engine in less time than it took to mask it off but everything else looked pretty good and if I would have pulled it I would have felt compelled to do everything to it again.

Here it is with the masking removed, not bad. I'll post another picture when I get it all back together.

OK, your turn now. Let's see what you're doing.

I worked until about 11:30 last night mounting new tires and doing some finishing touches on my 250 Penton to get it ready for Mid Ohio...

...AND THEN I GAVE IT AWAY!!!

Well, sort of....

Former National Hare Scramble and GNCC Champion, Doug Blackwell, is going to ride a couple of Kent's bike this year at Mid Ohio. Kent's bikes aren't completely ready, and since my bike is, I gave it to Doug so that he'll know what he's getting himself in to.:D This will Doug's first time at vintage racing.

I worked on a used Bing purchased for the Jackpiner today.  Issues found are part of the pilot jet broken where it was probably torqued too tightly.  Half of the head is gone but at least the jet opening is not affected.  The side idle adjustment screw had been replaced with a bolt which had the tip ground to a point.  Attempted to replace it with a correct spare only to find the original threads had stripped and this slightly larger bolt put in its place.  We'll see if I can get things sorted, get the Amal off, get this on, and get the Jackpiner running well for putzing at VMD [V]

Keith,

Amazing work! This is the ex-Settles bike I rode right? Did you send off the rims to be re-chromed or did you find some new? I still need to bring you that original rear sprocket the next time I'm in P'cola, might be next weekend.

OK Guys, we,re letting this thread slip back too far. I know some of you have done something to your Penton. Let's hear about it, even if it is just washing off the Mid-Ohio mud.

I cleaded my carb (2 years of sitting makes quite a mess) and put it back on and painted my airbox and installed it.

Great topic Dennis.  I wanted to reply before VMD, but we were in the middle of our typical, wait-til-June-to-start-building-bikes mode.  These photos are from the night before I left for Mid-Ohio.  The 75K 400 was a bare frame one week before the photo and the 79K 175 in the rear was a bare frame just 3 days before the photo was taken.  Kevin, Gary, and I spent some long hours on these bikes and, fortunately, they all came together in time and performed very well at VMD.  Our matching 125 was at James' shop when these photos were taken and I need compliment him on the fine job he does maintaining it as well.

The fourth picture is of new team member, 17-year-old Nicole Hays, who was very excited to see her ride for the first time!

Kent,
I just love those tanks.
Can you, or some of the other guys give me some history on these tanks?

Where did they come from, are they still available, etc?

Do they hold up well, some of the older aluminum tanks on vintage bikes seem to crack at the seams fairly easily after all these years.

Thanks.

Dennis,

Super idea starting this thread, thanks !!!!

Last night I loaded up an early Steel Tanker along with a "72" Jackpiner and set up a little display at a local weekly car cruise that was featuring Jeep & Off Road vehicles, a Penton banner attached to a tree provided a great backdrop and drew some nice comments. This cruise features a different make, model or segment of vehicles each week, this weekly event is gigantic with thousands of attendees each week.
http://www.starlitecarcruise.com/

It was a very rewarding evening with many stories from folks who had a Penton at one time, or had wanted one, or used to race against them....each of these folks had something in common, the smile on their face and twinkle in their eyes as they spotted the bikes, these folks kept a smile on my face all night long :)

A number of young kids were amazed at what a dirt bike looked like " back then", a very well dressed lady started to stare at the Steel Tanker from a distance and walked right up to it and just stared at it, as she left I asked what had caught her eye about the Penton, " the signature on the gas tank" she replied, John Penton had signed the tank awhile back.

There were some folks who had never heard of a Penton and were quite interested in it's heritage, many folks were amazed to learn that John Penton lived about 2 hours away in Amherst, one guy thought for sure that John Penton was an European...

But, the one question that was asked most frequently by folks who knew what they were looking at was, " DO YOU KNOW "CRAZY" JAKE FISCHER" ? You have to remember that in the Pittsburgh and surrounding area "Crazy" Jake has in some way touched most every off road motorcyclist of our era in some way, if only in the stories that are told of his exploits.

It was a great evening and I, like many others who were in attendance at the cruise, enjoyed being back in nineteen seventy something :D

Paul

I removed the engine from the MC5 400 and put it in the 74.5 chassis in preparation for possibly riding it next weekend at the Michigan ISDT race. I definitely would not make the cut for the Czechoslovakian ISDT team, it took me 4 hours to get it swapped. :D

I still have to put petcocks on the tank, swap on the correct shocks, try the big flywheel I got and swap on the MC5 wheels.

Lloyd,

The tanks we use are Hi-Point accessories that were offered back in the day.  There were many different versions available and they even came in an array of colors.  Unfortunately, they are getting pretty scarce/pricey these days.

We elected to use them when we first started building race bikes because they're very durable...the added benefits are they tolerate any kind of fuel and they look good.  The only modification I make is pressing a flanged hole into the front mount area and using Husqvarna mounts with a through-bolt.  Here's a scan from an old Hi-Point catalog:

This is my first post here and I can not seem to figure out how to attach pictures, maybe someone can help.

I just finished restoring a 73 Jackpiner 175 and am getting ready to restore my 72 Wassell but still having to much fun riding it from time to time. And I want to thank Al for all the parts for the resto on the Jackpiner, and also lots of the parts for the Wassell so far.

And this last weekend I just finished painting a 71 125 Six-day gas tank that is now on my shelf with some other vintage gas tanks.

I straightened and welded up the most bent and twisted swing arm I have ever seen. The right side was bent and twisted up about an inch. Which twisted the left side. And there was a giant crack on the right side just behind the cross brace. Couldn't remember at first how it could have got so bad, then I remembered that I had looped that thing at speed more than once. That explained the bent forks too. ;)

I took my playbike, 72 sixday, to Wildwood raceways fun day. A great turnout, Team Pentovarna was there in force and lots of other riders as well. My brother, his son and some of his sons friends all rode about 4 hrs. I was the slowest. It was a great day with prizes being awarded for various comps and one young fella who looked to be about 6 won a new minicycle. Good Day!

Well, technically it's not "my Penton", but I've got a 78 400 in the garage waiting for Dan McEntee to come pick up.  I pieced it together this morning to a)make it easier to transport and b) to get a list of missing parts for Dan so he's got a little advance notice of what he'll need to complete the bike.  Some stuff is the normal bits and pieces hanging around the garage and some will require the expertise of Al Buehner.  But the bike is 98% complete and kicks over with good compression.  A relaxing couple of hours in the garage!  Now to get to MY projects!  :)

Today I began the process of getting my '74 Jackpiner in shape for the Combs, AR ISDTRR.  After the Rose City event, I felt it was time to give it some TLC.  So today I checked the compression: 130 psi (is that good?), pulled the end cap off the exhaust (first time I've ever done that), to inspect the packing and for carbon build up.  I'll pull the motor tomorrow and get ready for some deeper prodding. Hopefully everything will be happy inside and I can focus on the chassis soon.

Is the before picture from the POG meeting at the AMA a few years back? If so, man there were a lot of Piners there including mine.

You're over the hill now Dale. Frame prep is my least favorite part of restoring a bike. It takes an incredible amount of time and work to do it right, I always get a second wind in a project when I bolt those first parts back on a good as new frame :D

I ordered a White tank form Clarke Engineering for my flat track project. Also I am adapting a Yamaha WR450 rear wheel to it.

Just had a KTM dropped of at my shop that the guy thought I needed. Ran the numbers (frame starts with 901- and motor starts 9-521) and it looks to be a 1979 KTM 175 GS80 from what I can tell. The motor is all together and seems to be in good shape with great compression, the frame is clean and in great shape, the rest is in a box but looks to be all there. Should be easy to get back together and running again.

Well, I had the opportunity to buy a 1975 Jackpiner, along with a 1980 KTM 250 GS to restore.  The bikes have been sitting since the mid 80's, so it was the usual old gas in the tank and carb.  I decided to work on the 175 first; cleaned the carb and tank, put fresh gas in it, four kicks, and the bike started right up!  I took that as a good sign of things to come!  If it wasn't pouring out today, I was going to ride the bike around the yard.... maybe later on.....  pictures to come soon.  Jl

Cut and ground off all the brackets on my 400 Penton swingarm. Then adapted a 2007 Yamaha 450WR wheel to it with a rear disk. Going to be a nice flat tracker. I am hoping the tank I ordered from Clarke Mfg. is going to fit. If not I guess I am going to have to modify the frame to fit the tank.

I'm just glad the new owner really appreciated it and it went to a good home.

Tore down my next 73 Jackpiner for resto.  Now begins the cleaning of mud and crud (not the fun part).  This thing still has the original Metzlers on it with no cracks.  I hope to be able to get them off and salvage them for re-install.

Good luck with that Keith. You'll probably need more muscle then luck. Hopefully they'll come off easy for you.
I'm out of work for a few weeks (sprained ankle) and got a set of ceriani 35mm forks all rebuilt yesterday, painted the front and rear PP fenders bone white, cleaned up some of the leather products, and installed the ignition coil. I got numerous parts cleaned up and ready to paint next week.  Now I'm looking at 3 sets of Akron rims for 74-75 250 scramblers and those huge boriani tires on there.
I started this 250 project in September of 2010, and haven't touched it since.  The wheels scared me away [V]

That 79 KTM 175 that was dropped off at my shop a month ago in a box is all back together now with everything but the gas tank. I am still working on repainting it. Should have the tank done next week and then it is time to ride...... It is always fun when you get a bike in a box, it's like a puzzle putting it back together and this one was missing the swingarm pivot bolt so had to have one machined, we made it out of an old Rolls Royce axle.
I would post a picture but can't seem to figure out how on this site

Got reunited with an old friend. Welcome back W430ST :D

This is the very first Penton/Wassell trials bike I owned. I won an AHRMA championship riding the 2 line with it and made the cover of Vintage Views with it in 2001.

Then like a dummy [8] I sold it to build a better bike many years ago. Getting it back is like stepping into a time machine as it has been sitting on display in an office all these years and is exactly like I sold it.

I got my new project bike started yesterday.  I cleaned the carb, pulled the head to check the cylinder, put some fresh gas in a very clean tank, 10 kicks later, it was running!  Very cool!  It bogs down at very low RPM's, but once I got past that, it ran pretty well.  Suspension feels okay, and it shifts really clean and firm.  I am planning on riding this bike as is for the remainder of this year, and then do a rebuild later this fall.

Not exactly today. But this season.
I know most of you folks aren't in to Observed Trials, and it isn't as popular as Motocross or Enduros, but I enjoy it. I have a couple Vintage Trials bikes, including a Yamaha, an Ossa, a Saracen and my Penton.
This season I rode the Penton exclusively and, for what it's worth, I won the New England Trials Association's 'Vintage Class' Championship.
Year end point results were posted today and .... well, I'm pretty happy. I love my Penton, and every event I go to, it gets plenty of attention.
Thanks to all the folks from this group that helped me out finding parts and answering questions.

Hi Steve, I'd mount tires if I had some. I'm having a hard time deciding on tires. It's not easy finding a decent 3.50 . On the Monarks there's not enough room for anything wider, when using the chain guard.
On the Penton it will probably be a 4.10 Cheng Shin C755, a 4.10 Duro, or maybe a 100/100 Pirelli Scorpion. For show they need to look correct, and for riding they need to work best - and I'm not sure there's a perfect solution for either.

If you are interested, I can get the rear cone sections made.  You would have to weld them together on your pipe.  If interested, let me know.  I can get the 125 and 175 pipe cones.

Your rear frame loop is bent WAY upward. That might help your seat sag also.

James,
Here is a pic I borrowed of a Mint 400 with a similar frame that shows the proper rear frame loop and rear fender position so that the seat base lays flat and doesn't warp, as it appears in your Jackpiner pic. Mike

Found a tank on eBay to put on my brother's original Jackpiner he bought in September 1973.  Tested for leaks, now need to strip and paint and get it running.  Has spark and compression, but hasn't run in 33 years!

Mick, is that the original motor?  I noticed it is painted silver, and I have been looking into engine colors vs engine numbers and year models. Most 73's had black motors, and supposedly 74's changed to silver, yet your pic is a 73 with silver motor.  Just curious.

Keith, I'm pretty sure it was a black motor originally.  My brother was notorious about taking his bikes in the basement during the winter and "updating" them to look more like the newer models.  I haven't tried scratching paint to investigate, but one thing I noticed is the vibration dampeners between the cylinder fins are also silver, a pretty sure tip that the cylinder was painted.

I went for a short ride today after church. Probably 30 -35 miles. Sun's shining and temp around 38.  Lots of frozen spots and ice. Sun had made the top 1/4 inch greasy in the sunny spots.  Fun!!!

If I am not mistaken, a Sept. 1973 dated bike (frame serial number) would have been a 74 model, however if the purchase date was Sept. 73, it may well have been a 73 model.

Checked the build clock on the engine cases of my brother's Jackpiner, 11/72, and scratched a few places on the center cases and cylinder, definitely black underneath.  Most likely a '73 model.

That looks like something that I'd try to fab, and then end up with about 25 "prototypes" scattered over the workbench before finally getting one right!

No need to give me one for free. I'm willing to send you whatever you think's fair. I would like one, though. I like the idea of having the cable held tight and not moving around. I sent you an email with my address and contact info. Thx.

Another good day here in Illinois, +55 and windy, got my 1977 Penton GS-125 frame sand blasted, and ready to paint. Also worked on steel-tanker rear fender, polished and ready to remount. Also had to dig up water line and repair, that went well but still sucked.  Dave

Finished re-doing the wheels for the JP today.  Spokes blasted, primed, painted.  Hubs blasted, polished.  Rims re-chromed.  These were the first wheels I have ever laced, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought.  One important note for others: The rear wheels have two different spokes, inner and outer, similar to the fronts.  The Penton parts book lists only one spoke for the rear.  The book is wrong.  I caught this before I got too far, when some of the outers didn't want to line up with the nipple holes.
Wheels before:

Rigging a brakelamp switch for a bike I am pulling together.  I figured I would post this as there are not a lot of good photos on how to mount these.  This is just a ZKW switch, available from Al B. with a little bracket to hold it in place, and allow for adjustments as you adjust your brakes.

yeah, well, i am brand new to POG and the Forums and this thread has given me a great "window" into the kind of folks who enjoy pentons. i am convinced motorcycle brand allegiance is diagnostic. Being a Guzzi and old Triumph guy before buying the 1977 250 GS6 which now occupies my spare time as it comes apart and goes together again according to Al Buehner's manuals and parts books, i am an example of my own theory. just measured the .040 head room mandated and wonder how many other people have been tempted to cheat a few thousandths for a little extra zoom. Alas, good sense wins out. . .look forward to getting to know you people.

Not sure if this qualifies as what I did to my Penton today...but I just finished up a bike (74 Six Day) for another member and he is headed down my way tomorrow to pick up.  Been working on this one since New Years eve and overall I am very happy with the results, I would post a picture, but I have not sent him any photos of the completed project yet ;), so I will have to wait till tomorrow to do that.   Now that I think about it, I actually did do something to mine today... I finally found a 40-404 vaporizer (gotta thank Doug Bridges for the lead on that) and re-jetted for that and CAM2.  Amazing difference, tomorrow I will get to put it through the paces and see if any other tweaks are in order.

(http://s1173.photobucket.com/albums/r590/sfdemo/?action=view¤t=P1010268.jpg)I finally have my 72 Jackpiner back on two wheels.

I bought it at the Medina swapmeet from President Paul.  To say it was rough is kind.  Before pictures to follow.

Stripped the engine (it was fairly easy as it was out and the top end off).  Some oxidization from sitting without oil, all in all good shape except for the clutch plates solidly fused as one.  Cylinder cleaned up pretty good with a hone, but went with a new piston (teflon coated), fresh bore and Bore Tech carbide impregnation.  Assembly coming up.

With the engine down to pieces, I started on the frame.  Based upon the condition, I decided to use Ace Powdercoating in Green Township since I saw their work at the Medina Swapmeet.  Crazy enough, they actually had two Penton frames for powdercoating the same week.  The only real hitch with the frame clean up was that the swingarm did not want to come apart.  I heated it up good, got the pivot to loosen up, but not out.  It had to be cut out of the frame and then pounded from the swingarm.

Of course, I don't have to say it.  Bushings are NOT available, but I did get a replacement pivot from eBay.  I found a super secret vintage car place the ended up making me a really nice set from modern materials for $45!

I picked up a nice used set of blue and white (what other color for a Jackpiner?) Works Performance shocks from eBay from our friend, Will Stoner since the bike had 1 1/2 shocks on it at the time I got it.

I checked the fork seals, changed the oil and reassembled the frame, cleaning and re-installing stock bearing in the head.  On the way, I removed all the paint from the triple trees, leaving them in polished aluminum.  Replaced the bars with vintage bend chrome bars (stock bars were bent) since I plan on riding it.  I managed to change the front tire on my own with no punctures but lost interest in changing the rear tire.  I took it to a local shop and met none other than Robbie Bush!  He was stoked to see a Penton wheel in the shop.

So, now I have a roller with new tires and a really nice looking powder coated frame, brake pedal, swingarm and skidplate.  I also re-installed the airbox after cleaning it up and put on a new front fender.

Some of the pieces were hard to install because other than the parts diagram, I have never seen one up close.  I will post some after pictures soon, too.

Sorry this is so long, but I had to get up to date.  I would like to thank all the POG members who have given advise, Paul Danik, Al Buehner, Terry Everett, Will Stoner, Bill Orth, Robbie, Ace Powdercoating and everyone I may have forgotten.

I also joined POG with my friend Jim and had a great time at the meeting on March 1st.

I think I have most of what I need to complete the build, but will have the trial of building an unfamiliar motor next month. Watch for my posts and heckle if necessary.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to upload pictures here?
Thanks
Rob

Thanks once again to Bill Orth for facilitating a delivery from Colorado to Diamond Don's.  It made a great pit bike and drew a considerable number of looks, interest, and questions.

My brother's new/old 1971 Penton has safely returned to Michigan [8D]

It wasn't today, it was last Thursday.  I got my 76 MC5 ready to race (or so I thought...).  The usual stuff: clean/grease hub internals and brakes, clean carb, clean/lube controls, replace fuel lines.  And the new stuff: 38mm Zokes and clamps, side-pull Magura, DC plastics panels with new stickies/numbers. For a very short while, she was this "purty":

Dale,I ended up with this one (less the orange bodywork). This was Tom Benolkins bike. The engine has a lot of trick stuff-i put blue gp tank, sidecovers and white fenders on it to see how it looked and like it better but still don't know if i can get past the gold frame(sorry Tom!).When it's done + back together i'll post a pic.

Recent spare time work on my 74.5 250; 1) replaced fork seals, 15w six inches from top and put on a set of Seal Savers, 2) cut off old tweaked rear frame loop and welded on replacement from Parmabike (nice piece), 3) fitted up a pretty nice fiberglass tank parking the big plastic tank I was using, 4) changed transmission oil (Honda CR trans oil) and cleaned air filter, and 5) fitted a new set of S12XC tires . I need to put a cover over the Penton because whenever I go out to the barn to get something I end up spending a bunch of time standing around staring at this old prize - a common problem I'd venture a guess.

I felt so bad about not making it to VMD this year that I uncovered all three of my vintage bikes, prepped them, cranked them up and rode them around the neighborhood. Not nearly as exciting as being at VMD, but at least the sound and smell of the 2-strokes get the juices flowing. Hope everyone enjoyed VMD.

Finally completed the 1974 Jackpiner project that I started with my daughter.  Due to a few personal obligations and delays the project was on the back burner for awhile but we finally got her done.

We started with a pile of parts and put another Penton back on the track (soon to be).  As you can see it's not 100% period correct but it was a blast buidling with my daughter and it incorporates a little bit of us!

A lot of thanks go out to this forum and the POG members.  This is truly a unique group or should I say family! Not to forget anyone but special thanks to Chicago Jerry, Gary Ellis, Al Buehner, Larry Perkins, Tom Brosius...

While home recovering very well from Embilical Hernia surgery that took place on Tuesday, Oct. 2nd, I have started the process of readying the parts of my 1978 KTM GS-6 250, which Gary Ellis rebuilt the engine, for assembly, while also assembling my 74 CR250M Elsinore. A lot of credit goes to my Son Steven for helping me lift the Elsinore engine and install it in the frame, and also for him & his cousins' Clayton & Nic for helping me with Media Blasting the frames and swingarms prior to painting the frames, as I am still on a 10 LB. lifting restriction, at least until my appointment this coming Thursday. These bikes may be for sale, depending on how long it is until I am released from restricted duty, and can hopefully find employment closer to home that actually has insurance for a change. Mike

Purchased the 77 KTM 250 GS from Gary Ellis earlier this summer (Thanks again Gary!!), and took the bike on it maiden voyage this past Sunday on a beautiful old school euro style GP track in Leesburg, VA.  It's the first time I've ever truly rode a Penton at race speeds and it was magnificent...Absolutely amazed by the motor and handling...I'm about 99.2% sure the all of my Maicos (dare I say it) will be mothballed for the next few years.

Purchased the 81 KTM 250 GS "back" from the previous owner.  I believe I sold this bike in 2009, and I instantly had seller's remorse. I raced it one time at a national and finished in the top three with bad tires, no less. I brought it home, put new tires, tubes, and replaced the Bing with a 36mm Mikuni, took it for a trail ride and then... I sold it[?][?][?][xx(][xx(]...I really don't know why I did it, but I instantly regretted it. Absolutely loved this bike, and so 6 months later I asked the new owner (Thanks Tim!) if I could by it back, and to my surprise he said yes. He said he would store it for me, and just to let him know when I was ready to pick it up...Well I finally got it back this Summer...Very glad to have them both back home, and I will never make that mistake again.

I got to spend a long day in the garage and had the longest work  session on my '73 Hare Scrambler than I've had since I picked up the project. Frame has been pained, hubs painted, new tires mounted, new shocks, new bars, spruced up the fenders, repaired the air box, and stripped the paint off the tank to expose the pretty yellow color. I didn't do all of this today, but did get enough done to assemble some pieces of the puzzle.  Got a ways to go on this project but it sure is nice to mock up things and get to see what it may look like when finished. I'm only good enough on the computer to take photos and email them Mike Winters:D ! So mike, if you see this could you post a photo of the bike when you get a chance? There is a "before" photo on another thread.
   Thanks a lot,

Although the 78 GS-6 hasn't gained a lot in the way of progress because of low funding and colder than normal shop conditions, The Non-Penton project 74 CR250M Elsinore did, since I already had most of the parts for it. Now if I could just come up with that elusive original chain guide without having to sell the farm to pay for it, LOL. Why someone can't reproduce such a simple piece is beyond my comprehension. One just sold on eBay for over $200. Mike

Thanks Sean, I'm pretty happy with the progress in spite of all my past whining:D Chrome went out two weeks ago, wheels and hubs should be out by next wk, and paint is all done except for the pinstriping on the tank. Something gets done everyday.
'Better get cracking on your ST's though! If you listen closely you can hear the available parts drying up.[V]  Cheers, Fred

74 1/2 250 hadn't been started since July of last year. Rolled her out of the barn, added fuel, worked the tickler for a spell, kicked her once; up she lit and settled into a nice idle. I should have expected nothing less after all it is a Penton.

With the help of Vance Smith the new/old Mudlark W-257ST came up from the basement this weekend.  It came home through a snow storm on MLK day in January and I promptly tucked it away.  Sadly, the claimed spark wasn't present and Vance diagnosed it has stator output but the coil, ground, or kill button need to be looked at further.

Mike,
Good diagnosis ;)
After disconnecting the kill, replacing the ground wire, trying a different coil, I turned my attention to the points.  A little points dressing action and some electrical cleaner and wah-la.  Now running like a champ :D:D:D

I stared longingly at my poor husk of a Penton and almost cried because of just hooowwwww much work it's going to take to bring her back to life. Fixing to have to sell off a BUNCH of my old racers and non-racers to fund this one..

I got my Penton dirty over the weekend racing at Devil's Ridge in NC.  Only a few Pentons there, but it was a lot of fun. I saw an interesting Can Am 125 motor in a CMF (250 frame I think).  I managed a 3rd place and had the normal shake down problems of a newly assembled motorcycle.  Bolts loosening, seat falling off at an inopportune time ect.

I don't know if they're still available, but I used to buy a Carborundum product called Flex-Stones, which were great for cleaning up points, and lasted forever.  With minimum residue, that and a little non-petroleum base quality points cleaner was all you needed, especially on two-strokes, where timing is critical.  Of course today, many wrenches don't even know what "points" are.  Cheers.:D

Cheers Dale,

I didn't put the motor together, it' how it came from the states. i will investigate tonight! Riding it on the weekend at a Vinduro event, so don;t want any nasty surprises. i think it has some piston noise, but i will cure that after this weekend.

Cheers,

I got my Penton/Wassell Trials out and gassed it up, it's probably been close to a year since I've had it out. It fired off after a few kicks and I had a nice ride :D

After the ride it got a good powerwash in order to begin a re-restoration. This was the first Penton I ever restored and that was in 1997. I've sure learned a lot since then as I keep finding things I did then and have to laugh. For the life of me I don't know why I reused the Witworth fasteners [8]

Hi Everyone, We're Roger and Mary Boardwine from Blue Ridge Virginia. Today I finally uncovered the Berkshire for some shots of it before any cleaning.I have been collecting and trading bikes for my whole life. I thought getting a 77 GS6 175 several years ago was great, then I had the opportunity to buy some of Mark's Cycle Sales remaining bikes and parts Penton KTM Hodaka). Great Huh? Well then at Lake Sugar Tree as Fred Guidi and I shook hands on a deal up pulls a pick up truck carrying a 1970 Penton Berkshire that rocked my world. It just could not be that fresh. Tank with overspray inside? I have joined the group and look forward to being a part of Penton's future!

Mr. Penton, Thank you, well done, and hang tough
Your sign that I dreamt under as a child now hangs above my collection.

This is what I started with in June and the end result last weekend
Thanks to Gooddirt and Larry Winter and Al Buehner for parts and advice, and also everybody who answered my questions while restoring

The correct pipe is still something I am looking for if anyone has one available let me know

The MC5 400 is next to be restored and will be in the Penton orange

Maurice, Michael Thompson, a very good friend of mine bought a very very late 1977 mc5 at mid-ohio that has the exact same angled pipe with the dent in it for frame rail clearance like the 77-78 GS6 style pipe that you have, and it uses the downturn manifold, so it's possible the frame mounts in very late 77 also are repositioned. Really like that '74 and like the fact that you are not going to paint anything.  Only original once!  Also interested in the fact that it has a red toaster tank. -Thought all '74-75's were fitted with the watermellon tank and '73 was the only year for the toaster tank (yellow)on a 250.??

It was pretty common for '74, '75 KTM's in Europe to still have 'toaster' tanks. More so than here, where we had 'watermelon' enduro tanks. Maybe that was more of a U.S. thing.

So do you think I might have a missing-link here.

Thanks John, yeah pretty cool eh? Totally different perches that accept the orange/or grey adjusting stars, and little pegs to secure the dust boots. They're not listed in the 1977 Hi-Point catalog, but are in the 1982 catalog.(don't have the years in-between) So they're from some time between '78 and '82. Even though they remind me of an earlier era.

Hey Rob! You see that little glass bead on top of the headlight? It's the high beam indicator lense. HAs anybody found any kind of replacememnt for those? I just need something to fill the hole and look about right, I don't know if I'll ever get high and low beam working, but will get at least a basic headlight working, and need something to fill the hole. I was taking the old one out so I could do some metal work, blasting and painting to the bucket, and it shattered on me. I haven't had time to really check, but I'm hoping a kids Lite Bright toy peg fits, and a can reshape one of those to fill the need.
Nice looking levers and adjusters! No problem finding those in the dark!
  Type at you later,

Dan,

I've been building this 73 Jackpiner which came with a modified pipe that has a super trap forrestry approved silencer on the end of it.  I thought I would leave the pipe as is so it would be legal in areas that require spark arrestors, but it needed a heat shield.  I fabricated this from stainless steel to look similar to the originals but made it tapered to fit the cone shape of the pipe.
This is without the heat shield:

Absolutely beautiful  :D

Did you do the paint work, any specifics you want to share with folks hoping to tackle such a project?

Again, great job.

The pictures didn't seem to carry the color very well, but the frame's silver and the yellow paintcodes I got from gooddirt a while back, and they matched several original engine braces that I had perfectly.  The blue came from the paint supplier taking another non-faded gel coat tank and matching the color using some fancy machine.  All blue, silver, and yellow paints are Shopline single stage urethane over either epoxy or rattle can primers (one worked as good as the other).  Engine paint is PJ1 Satin Black engine and case rattle cans (matches the original perfectly). All components were cleaned to bare metal (glass bead metal, gentle stripper fiberglass) before finishing.  The motor rebuild was performed by following the steps in the Penton repair manual.   A couple of special tools were made with the help of my work's machinist.  Some parts were zinc plated using the Kevin Donovan posted description of how to set-up your own zinc plating operation.  The wheels were a pair of original NOS raedellis that someone had still on the shelf.  I have also sent rims off for re-plating, which looked nice, but isn't cheap.  I wanted to use correct high-shouldered steel rims rather than aluminum rims since this model came with steel.  Spokes were bare metal cleaned, metal etch primered, Duplicolor silver caliper paint sprayed, all baked in oven after priming and silver.

Hope this helps,

Keith Meatyard

Al, I did not.  I attended and graduated from University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL.  If you know of a Meatyard up there, they are probably related, as there aren't many of us

I have a 74 JP that is the runner, for trail riding, but I probably won't race anywhere serious due to several medical issues.  I do, however, enjoy working in the shop restoring the bikes.

I've been working on the race restoration of my $100 craigslist 1972 Six Days.

Well, I have completed the engine, all new seals, shifting adjusted by Jerry Birky @ Penton Racing Products, fresh hone, new rings and ready to drop in the frame. He also worked his magic welding up some cracked aluminum pieces.
//

The carb, airbox and most of the pieces are ready to put back together.  The frame is getting a couple of welds fixed and will be ready for paint. Since it was apart to start with,

I will have to hunt for the nuts and bolts as they are all mixed together. My only major projects besides assembly is replacing the fork seals and cleaning/painting the exhaust pipe.

The rims are cleaned and ready for the tires.

The fuel tank is ready to go on also.  I polished it up and rebuilt the petcocks with a new cap gasket.

Stephen, the low mounts and the rear fender are from Sammy Miller Products. The mounts are for an Ossa MAR, you have to modify the mount holes some but they work fine. A couple years ago a guy on ebay had the front fenders and had several, I think I bought five and this is my last one.

Lew, this is the first Penton Trials I bought and restoring it (again) and parking it with the Jackpiner I used to chase you around the AHRMA cross country series is about all there is to being back at it.

The short version of the story Uncle Ronnie is talking about is I bought this bike as a project, rebuilt it, rode it several years in AHRMA trials, won a championship on it in 2001 (even with the 6B motor) riding the 2 line, then sold it to ride a 152 kitted Wassell.

After about eight years or so a very gracious POG member let me buy it  back from them. It had been on display in an office the whole time and it was like a time machine, exactly like I sold it.

I only have two Pentons now, this one and the one in the first post of this thread and I hope to never have to sell either.

Hey Hank,

James stocks Dunlop Geomax MX51, so that's what we've been using recently.  When Adam was Maxxis sponsored we used Maxxis Cross SI, and when Cory B. was Michelin sponsored, he preferred a variety of Michelin's with mousse inserts.  Before that, Kevin and Gary rode on Michelin M12's and S12's depending on the terrain.  That's my $.02 on tires...kind of like the whole premix/fuel debate...everyone has their preferences.

Good to hear from you...hope you guys are keeping warm over there!

Almost a motorcycle again.  If it wasn't so damn cold, it would be rolling. The wheels are pre-assembled and ready to go on, as are the tank and seat.  One good day above freezing (or at least 25!), it would be good to go.

Kent, what do you mean you "blueprinted" the hubs?  I know what blueprinting an engine means, but not the hubs.  Can only assume it will help a vintage bike stop better, and that's a good thing!

Thought I would add some pics from my steeltanker restoration to get this topic back going again.  Re-doing a 71 Six Day.
Couldn't find footpegs, so I made them from flatbar:(http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad77/Meatyard_photos/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/FootPegs5_zps4060b663.jpg) (http://s923.photobucket.com/user/Meatyard_photos/media/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/FootPegs5_zps4060b663.jpg.html)
The tank was already nicely painted but didn't have the black stripe, so I did some tedious taping and painted the stipes on.  Here's before stripe and after:(http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad77/Meatyard_photos/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/gastankbeforestripe_zpse6a3fe53.jpg) (http://s923.photobucket.com/user/Meatyard_photos/media/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/gastankbeforestripe_zpse6a3fe53.jpg.html)
Now after adding the stripe:(http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad77/Meatyard_photos/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/GasTank2-Copy_zps3358db69.jpg) (http://s923.photobucket.com/user/Meatyard_photos/media/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/GasTank2-Copy_zps3358db69.jpg.html)
Some detail work on the mag cover serial number tag that had been previuosly glass beaded.  Before:(http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad77/Meatyard_photos/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/cover-mag2_zps6ea7cf25.jpg) (http://s923.photobucket.com/user/Meatyard_photos/media/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/cover-mag2_zps6ea7cf25.jpg.html)
After detailing the tag:(http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad77/Meatyard_photos/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/cover-mag3_zpsc45edf86.jpg) (http://s923.photobucket.com/user/Meatyard_photos/media/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/cover-mag3_zpsc45edf86.jpg.html)
Frame being painted:(http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad77/Meatyard_photos/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/Painting2_zpsc3d2ba8e.jpg) (http://s923.photobucket.com/user/Meatyard_photos/media/Penton%20Project%202010/71%20Steeltanker%202014/Painting2_zpsc3d2ba8e.jpg.html)

This is the bike that I am needing the original handlebars for.
Gotta be somebody out there that can help me get this thing completed by selling me a pair of bars.

Outstanding as always Bob. That rear brake pedal is a work of art for an inexpensive bike when new.

New front and rear wheel bearings, new fork seals and oil, and replaced the 10-year-old Kendas with modern tires; first modern tires I've ever had on a vintage bike.  They're used, but in much better shape than the Kendas were.

In a rare weekend of no family commitments or obligations, I decided to tinker around in the garage.  Today I pulled out my 77 Penton 250 GS6 for a little pre-race maintenance. The KTM to the left to is a 78 KTM 400 MC5 with an Enduro Kit.  Started both bikes and rode them around the yard. Both started easy and are running great.

(http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b554/Skoalman47/Vintage%20Motorcycles/77PentonSEP2014a_zps02a7f555.jpg) (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/Skoalman47/media/Vintage%20Motorcycles/77PentonSEP2014a_zps02a7f555.jpg.html)

Yesterday, I worked on my recently completed restored 1969 Maico 360 MC and a freshened up stock 71 Maico 400 MC/GS.  Wasn't happy with the 40+ year old Bings on the bikes, so I experimented on both of them with a very fresh 36mm Mikuni VM.  Bottomline: The Maicos were much easier to start, idled better, and had better low to mid range.  So last night, I ordered a new 36mm Mikuni and will be installing on the 360 in the very near future.

Kevin, I just cleaned the tank and waxed it. I could buff it and get it a little nicer, which I may do. It does have a few digs on the top. But it looks pretty good the way it is. The build date is Feb 73. They must have had some 72 frames left. My buddy has a 73 and it has the same stand mount. I cleaned the frame, it has some scratches and worn paint but it's not bad. The wheels have some surface rust that won't come out along with some surface rust on the spokes too. All in all it's in decent shape.

My wife, Cathy, is film captain for the John Penton Story here in Tucson.  Wednesday evening we went to a vintage bike night at the local pub to try and sell the remaining tickets for the show.  We were talking to some of the old MX riders and we started talking about the Nationals coming to Tucson in a few weeks.  We had arranged the movie to coincide with the race to get more people involved.  Our new friends let Cathy know the track they plan to run the Natl's at will be open for practice tomorrow, Sunday.  That's all Cathy needed to hear and the next thing out of her mouth was, "Which bike can I ride?"

So back to what I did to my Penton today? ...... Get it ready for the wife and the Natl's!

You may have to remove the skid plate prior to inserting the pipe in, in  a rotating twisting motion. The front fender may be a factor also, but I'm not sure on that one. You can always take the airbox loose and then reassemble it to provide a little extra clearance, because it is a tight fit. Mike

Thanks for the tip. The pipe is not binding at the skip plate but the two down-tubes of the frame (behind engine). There isn't enough room to rotate it. If you look carefully you can see that the bolts holding the airbox are already out. I thought about that too but that didn't fix the issue.

Thanks again

Andreas

I know my jackpiner pipe has to be screwed out.It took about 1 1/2 rotations to get it out.  And Mike is right, the fender is in the way. On my 74 250 I had to remove the airbox to get the pipe in.
The bike looks awesome tho.  Good job!!!

Just picked up this 250 MC5.  Frame #550-03573 engine #6-5412042.  The frame ID guide stops at 1977 and I was told this is a '78.  What do the numbers say?  Also, the date clock is blurry; I can't tell if it says 1976 or 1978.  Is there a way to tell from the numbers?  You can see from the second picture why the bike was taken apart.  How would you guys go about getting the ignition off?

Mick,
In my opinion you have a late 76 engine, possibly used in early 77. All 76-77 MC-5's used the 550- frame numbers, and the engine is 12,042 which was most likely built in late 76 (6-5412042). I have not seen 76's with a serial number higher than around 3000, and your is 3573, so i would guess the bike is an actual 77, so look at the rear seat rails and compare them to this thread:

Good question, because I have a late 77 MC5 rolling chassis with an orange frame, and Gary has at least one orange frame with dual position footpegs. I wonder if that coincides with the time that John signed it over. The 78 MC5's have 855- serial numbers. Mike

DO not put the bike in gear unless you like damaged trans gears, but the air wrench will loosen the nut without having the bike in gear. Remember, loosen clockwise not counter clockwise. Mike

Mike, the center insert threads are good, but unfortunately my puller is not and I need to get a new one.  I've got to go see Gary in a couple weeks so I'll wait until then to pull the broken flywheel off.  I think this bike will run soon.  Thanks for the advice!

Started my winter project the other night, an early 72 Six Day that I had picked up a long time back.  Anyway, bike came with a 125/6A and the cases were trashed from a chain drop and there was also a hole right through the right side center case where there is a blind bearing.  I am guessing someone got a little too aggressive trying to "tap" out the blind bearing.   Initially, I was just going to replace the bottom end with a 6B I had hanging around, but decided to try and save these cases.  So the pictures below show the repair process.

This is the right inner case with a big chunk taken out from a chain drop

Notice the extra hole below the counter shaft hole.

Fixed both of those issues and did it without melting into the blind bearing race under patch.

Next issue was the magneto cover, nice big chunk missing.

So I took a piece of aluminum flat stock and with lots of tedious grinding got it to fit just right.

Welded in the cover patch

Then I decided to plug up the speedo pickup hole as I have no intention of using it.

Still has a few small porosity spots but I will just use a skim coat of Marine-Tex on those and some hand sanding before painting.  Spent most of the afternoon working on this but at least I will be able to keep the original engine with the bike.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi All, my wonderful wife bought me a GoPro video camera for Christmas and I've been having a ton of fun playing with it shooting footage of our dogs, wrestling practice and this example of my first motorcycle riding.  It's on a 3/4 mile long track on our property. If things go well maybe we can have a spring play-day when winter breaks.  Photobucket is the host site and I'm not sure which image to use, so this might take a couple of attempts.  Hope you enjoy watching as much as I did making:

I can never figure out how to post photos on here, but I did just build up a 1256B race bike, and I went a bit nuts on the motor! Yamaha RD 400 rod, '88 Honda CR125 piston, removed liner, bored out cylinder block for aluminum liner, Nicasil plated, added four boost transfer ports and two boost exhaust ports, shortened and enlarged intake port to 32mm, mounted 32mm Mikuni, PVL digital ignition, shortened pipe by removing all of the straight belly section, cut the transmission gears for better shifting(by far!!), installed my last set of reproduction straight cut primary gears, and to top it off, made a billet cylinder head with a centered, 3/4" reach plug. Started it for the first time last week, and it shrieks!! Couldn't ride it because tank is being painted, but just by the sound and response of the engine, I know it will fly! Can't wait to ride it.

Picked up these to two crusty critters last fall and managed to cobble together one decent rider from the two of them.  Did the last shakedown run yesterday and I can finally declare it race ready.

First race of the 2017 NETRA Vintage Season, is next Saturday.  Budget build, not a beauty queen but it should be a solid runner.

I'm trying to match the frame color to my 1977 GS6 175cc Penton, which is gray. But all the cans I've been getting are not right. Anybody know who could help?

Just pickup a 1977 Penton GS6 175cc

Just rebuilt fuel petcocks and put new crank seal in. Looking to rebuild the marzocchi rear shocks any ideas for kits?

The seals are readily available at a place that sells seals.  "Rocket" Rod Gorzny, a member here, rebuilds them and is reasonable.

Productive weekend.  Five pack ready to load for VMD with a couple of hours spent washing and scrubbing 1/2 of the club 24' trailer.  Cleaning the second half should be a little easier plus putting the bench back in some sense of order [V]  Only six more projects to go with three hopefully ready for next years 50 something. This was one of my favorite POG threads and would like to see some renewed activity.  I know you are working on something, somewhere  :p   Should be finishing up getting the Cheney Sachs running and then on to a 72 CMF build.

Note on the picture add - sizing 3.MB - would not add manually but it did take it using the drag and drop feature.

Good idea Dale to bring this thread back to the top. I'm currently building a 75 Jackpiner and 75 Harescrambler that have been patiently waiting their turn out in the shop to receive some love. Also freshening up my 74.5 Mint 400. I'll be thinning these three from my Penton herd once completed. If anyone has an interest in buying any of these three bikes please don't hesitate to contact me through the site. Thanks for looking.

Well, still haven't figured out how to post photos here, but anyway, I went over my bike (76 MC-5 250) from last weekend's GNCC race.  Everything is looking good, no damage.  I changed the air filter, checked the bolts, chain tension was good so I am set for the next race next weekend in northern GA. I love getting a bike to the point of everything is done, and now I just have to maintain it.

I did nothing to my bike except start it up and let it warm up. I do this several times a year to make sure that it starts up and runs. Because I have not been riding it, it has regular pump gas in the tank that has been in there for 5 or more years. The bike generally starts right up after 2-3 kicks.

NOTE: This bike has
a Hi-Point alloy tank
Lectron carb with alcohol proof float bowl
MZB ignition
Because I have these components on my bike, I am able to get away with keeping old gas in the tanks and getting the bike to run. Do not do this with a stock Penton bike.

It is my desire to take it out and ride it this year when the weather warms up. I will be giving it a good going over to check things out and perhaps give it a good cleaning to remove the Missouri mud off of it from 12 years ago.

Five years ago today, I met this nice young person from Ohio who likes and races motorcycles and wanted a Penton.  So.... I guess this is what "did I do to my Penton" in the past.  The sale of the bike was the first of many great experiences both in person and at the track to follow.

Every project needs to start somewhere.  I can't remember exactly where the '72 frame was acquired.  The seat I am going to use came off another Penton.  It was not original, and I never liked the overstuffed look.  More to follow as spring and warmer weather are around the corner.  Hoping to have it ready and a rider found before VMD 2023.

Today I took the cover off of V416 where it sits parked in the heated 'mud room' and stared at it. It's been two years since I took it out for it's once a year run/leg stretch. Now I don't remember the fuel mix!  In the past I'd mixed a five gallon batch with Golden Sprectro Syn/Pet blend but it's a waste to mix that much for me. I do have 6 oz. of that left, but could I use my Stihl Prem. (50:1) oil and just do a gallon or two of fresh ea. yr. in the future? I have Got to get out this yrs. and limber it up, it's been sitting to long without being ridden. 'Not good. Thanks,  Fred

The Jackpiner I rode as a kid has is badly in need of a rebuild. It came with this aftermarket tank that has gotten badly discolored and I have not been able to get it white again. Even though it is not stock, as far as I am concerned it is the tank that belongs with this bike for now and want to make it work.

PXL_20230525_181812049.jpg

I hear that painting plastic tanks is problematic and painting is not really my thing anyway, so tried wrapping it in vinyl. I am very pleased with how close the blue is to the stock tank color. It should match the side covers and air box just fine.

PXL_20230611_141404243.jpg

It needed to be done in three panels because the vinyl does not like all the sharp curves. Hopefully, the white top will go well with a new set of Preston Petty fenders! Here it is sitting on its frame.

I finally finished my three projects and am ready to sell them all. I'm planning to take all of them to VMD at Mid Ohio next month to sell but if you're in the market before then please let me know. The three bikes are a 75 Jackpiner, 75 250 Harescrambler and a 74.5 400 Mint. I'll be posting details on each of them in the Wanted/For Sale page sometime soon. Thanks for looking !

WOW! I had forgotten about this thread I started a long long time ago. I took my steel tanker out for a ride and had a flat tire so while I had it on the lift I replaced the rear fender with one of Roberto's nice reproductions and a correct tail light mount I got off of ebay.
