Title: 1971 ISDT Rider(s) ID.
Post by: Dale Fisher on July 16, 2011, 04:47:38 AM
This picture came in from one of my British friends.  He is asking for the identification of the riders in the picture.  It would have been taken "pre-scrutineering" and three of the four faces are hidden.  Based on the large name on the helmet to foreground rider might be Dane.  Short name left Tom Penton perhaps?  Cranke in the back?

Dale,

Once again an interesting photo.  It is important to figure the year as the riders vary in each year. My guess from the Shell sign in the background, the fact that one of your British friends has the photo, and the new riding jackets that the picture was taken at the Isle of Mann at the 1971 event.

If the year is indeed 1971, I don't have any info or pictures indicating that Carl rode that year. Carl's info in the ISDT reunion ride program indicates that he started ISDT competition in 1972. In 1972 Tom did not ride as he could not get leave from the service.

In the JP book it states that in 1971 the CMF model was first ridden by the US team, as well as a prototype model of the soon to be released KTM engine. If you look at the engine on the bike on the left it is indeed a KTM powered machine.

If it is indeed 1971 Carl is not the rider in the rear. I do agree that the front rider looks to be Dane, the rider on the KTM powered machine looks to have a military jacket on and Tom wore those quite a bit.

That leaves the rear rider, Lars Larsson, Gene Cannaday, Dave Mungenast, Mike Lewis, Dick Burleson and Charlie Vincent are listed as riding Pentons in 1971. My guess is that it is Dave.

You mention 4 riders, if you are including the guy in the blue coveralls I think he is a KTM person checking on the KTM engine.

Just my findings, any other thoughts are welcome to chime in...

Thanks for posting the picture.

Paul

Rider in the rear appears too tall to be Mike Lewis and from what we can see of his face I can say that it is NOT Mike Lewis.

My vote for the man in the back is Dave Mungenast Sr. Probably one of the nicest, most down to earth motorcycle heroes I ever had the privilege to know.

Looking at the face of the third rider, it looks more like Lars Larson then Dave M.  No offence to Lars. But Dave was a much more handsome fellow and a fashion plate who would most likly not have donned blue jeans at an event like this.

As always, this is only my most humble opinion. :D

See you all at VMD.

See you down Old Dusty.

Apologies for not being able to count.[:I]  It was very early when I put it on. The pictures is from 1971 and came from Brian Catt who took photographs and a number of the ISDT events.

Note too that there are no numbers on the bikes, and that the unidentified riders don't appear to be fully dressed for racing. The machines look brand new & are clean.

Perhaps this photo was taken on a "break in" or setup day prior to the race.

These could even be some of the "pre-runners" that teams were not supposed to have...

There were always quite a number of US riders that attended & rode the course without entering the race as members of the "Hi point Tours" that John used to put on. I knew a couple dealers that rode entire 6 day courses multiple times in a week but were never entered or scored.

I remember now - they were called "support riders". Unsung heroes from the ISDT teams.
