Title: Octane Boost
Post by: derek martin on July 19, 2011, 10:15:18 PM
I've just scored a really nice fiberglass tank for my 74.5 250 which up to this point I've only had fitted with a plastic tank (Windsor maybe?). In all my newer and older 2 strokes I've been running PJ1 Octane Booster at 1 1/2 Oz. per gallon of 92 Octane pump gas with Amsoil at 50:1 with good results for quit some time. What I'm wondering is if the PJ1 Octane Booster (mostly tolulene) will eat the fiberglass tank? I don't believe this tank has been treated with any sealant inside. I've recently found a local source for 92 Octane straight pump gas (non-ethanol) which is what the Penton currently runs mixed as above with the plastic tank.

Just use non ethanol gas in your fiberglass tanks. Go to race gas if you need a higher octane fuel. I use race gas in all my bikes. I burn 30 gal a year and buy it 5 gal at a time from a speed shop.

Toluene will damage fiberglass. I run 50/50 whatever flavor 110 leaded I can find and the highest octane (currently 90) non ethanol pump fuel I can find.

Thanks fellows - I wasn't for sure about the octane booster's effect on the fiberglass tank.

The way you are mixing the octane booster it shouldn't hurt your tank. Race gas contains a high volume of Toulene up to 25% or more.  So a few ounces won't hurt. Just don't put it in straight. Alcohol will cause more damage.
