Dale,
Thanks for posting the rresults.  It is sad when you look at the hometowns that most of them are very close to the race location.  This indicates to me that not many people know abut this Championship or do not care?  Either case is sad.  Thanks for the pictures you take Dale.

I heard that Fredette and Cory B DNF'd their Hare Scramble races - this contributed to Adam Giddings getting the Off-Road Vintage Grand Championship (on his Pentons!).  But did Cory DNF or just lose a bunch of time? The AMA article says he bent his shifter.

Gary Ellis put quite a whuppin' on the PV ranks - oh wait, no he didn't.  He was last seen taking somebody else's Penton Hare Scrambler out on the course after putting a bullet thru the head of his 175 GS.  No word on whether he "borrowed" the 250 or borrowed the 250...:D

And finally - kudos to Tim Ferguson, who hails from my AHRMA region. He almost won the new (I didn't hear about THIS title...) SENIOR Vintage Off-Road Grand Championship.  Rides a BSA Victor 441 like it's a Combat Wombat, by gawd.

No one cares Ron. With all due respect to Cory and Adam, that "championship" is a joke. I'm sure glad the AMA "saved" vintage racing for us.

I for one think that the ones who don't care, don't show up. Racing and fun is just that. If AMA or AHRMA do the event I will ride just to ride.Wish more racers would feel this way. Later Gary

Gary, I fill the same way. Seems that some people can always put a negative spin on things. I race for the fun of it and to hang out with my friends. I could care less who is putting on the race or where its at. I can have fun anywhere.

The AMA doesn't even inspect the bikes to make sure they are legal in the class they are competing. I heard that the people running the races didn't even know anything about motorcycles. Sad but the AMA should have left the racing to be run by AHRMA. And to call a single race a national championship is a joke. IMO
This comment was posted on the VINDURO forum:
"Yes AMA was lost and I told them about it. When I got there on Thurs and asked about the races on Fri and everyone I asked said "oh there is races on Fri?" It just went down from there. Was no tech inspections,no check points, and the flagger/scoring was on a fast turn that was ran like a beginner club. No discounts for racing or running more classes. Very disorganized place."

Anyway, When I go to VMD it isn't for the racing. It is the displays and swap meet. I also always enjoy seeing my friends and hanging out at the POG tent.

Gary and Gene,

I dont care who puts on the race either, I only race for fun too, all I care about is what quality event I get in return for my money and time. I've got similar problems with Diamond Dons, AHRMA's biggest race. EVERY year the scoring is royally messed up, EVERY YEAR. And dont even get me started on the horrible MX "track" (and I use that term very loosely) at the Barber event.

Let me ask you this. Do you really think the event you got last weekend was to the standard you should expect from an AMA National Championship?

Brian, I don't know if I would name it "National Championship", Maybe AMA should name it something else. I still think its a very good event. The only problem I had with the event was the gate fee, but things change. This economy has messed up every thing. I heard there were not as many venders this year. Half of the venders are out of business. I started not to go myself, but a friend needed a bike hauled up to Mid-Ohio. Then another friend needed a bike hauled back to NC. So I went. I only race cross country and ride trials so I think Mid-Ohio, DDs, Barber all are great events. I going to Mt.fest this weekend, my next great adventure!!!!  I hope all you guys come up there.
Also, AMA brought in the guys from Log Road to lay out a new MX track. I didn't ride it, but it looked the best Mid-Ohio has had.

Let me first qualify my comments by stating that I've been an AMA life member for 25+ years and I've been an AHRMA member since the very early days.  I've seen the ups and downs of both organizations, I have very dedicated friends in both organizations, and I will continue to be very supportive of both organizations.

Brian, you've made your views on VMD known in 2009...again in 2010, and again in 2011...I think we get your point by now.  How you feel knowledgeable enough to comment on an event you don't attend is beyond me, but to each his own.  What's really ludicrous though, is thinking you have the privilege to sit behind your keyboard and speak for everyone by saying "no one cares".  I hate to break this to you, but a hell of a lot of people DO care.  Try Jack Penton, who was in charge of the whole event and worked extremely hard for lord knows how long preparing for it.  He has some wonderful ideas for growing the event as well and I have nothing but admiration for his efforts.  Museum board member and POGer Don Rosene and Museum board member Tom White fly in from Alaska and California and spend the weekend calling the motocross races in the 100 degree weather.  Alex Moroz brought the Legends and Heroes of Motocross rig.  Jeff Fredette competed in the hare scramble last year and came back this year as the event Grand Marshal.  He also made a run at the Grand Championship this year and, despite some mechanical difficulties, was having a great time whenever we spoke.  You're telling us none of these people care?

The Mastin family worked very hard to provide us with a hare scramble course.  The Log Road folks worked very hard to provide us with an excellent motocross track, despite the heat and rain.  After the motos on Saturday, many of the racers attended a spaghetti dinner to help raise money for the ISDE efforts of Mandi Mastin and Cory Buttrick.  I suppose none of these people care either?

And the pits full of bikes and racers...certainly none of them care right?  Our team worked on bikes for months to get ready for this event...and we had two new members, 17 year old Nicole Hays and 24 year old Josh Gaitten, who are now hooked on vintage racing, Penton's, and the whole POG experience.  And don't forget the hundreds of people that flowed through our pits over the weekend, wishing us well and complimenting us on our efforts...many of them are right here on the message board, so I'm sure they're grateful that you spoke for them when you said "no one cares".

We've been racing vintage bikes since the 90's and we've attended Mid-Ohio every year since then as well.  We've been there during our AHRMA championship runs, during years where we only had one or two people competing, during the years when they had to cap entries at 500, and during all of the years there wasn't an AMA Championship.  It's vintage racing Brian...no big trophies...no big paychecks...no Cycle News covers...no FIM World Championships.  We all get together every year to have fun racing our old bikes and hang out with our friends...it's that simple.  Don't doubt for a second that every single one of us cares.

Bob, the harescrambler Gary borrowed was mine.  I ran the bike in the vintae cc race, then when Gary broke a ring on his bike he asked me and I said yes to him riding a couple laps of the PV.  After all, he built the engine and it's rock-solid!  I rode it really easy because it was fresh with only 15 minutes on it before the race, and I haven't ridden the bike in three years, so Gary gave me his opinion of it, too.  I need to gear it down a little, but otherwise the new engine and 34 Mikuni were great!I'm going to look into the modern peg modification that Gary Roach talked about, but other than that, let's go racing!

As far as the race itself, the course was typical Mid-Ohio and I enjoyed it.  As far as the organization of the day and politics, well, I'm a paid life-member of 30 years myself, and we all have seen bad promoters.  I've said it before, support both the AMA and AHRMA or we all lose.  Nuff said.

Mick

It was my first trip to VMD.  I planned on racing all 3 days on 3 different bikes.  Let me say that I was amazed !   By many things.
The huge facility.  The huge swap meet.  The large number of people who came thru the gates.  We put 65 miles on our scooter riding just on the mid-ohio grounds in 3 days !    And even though we were there for 3 days, we still didnt get to meet all of ya'all...
The CC event was a good course, that offered what I thought was a very nice layout with nice trails and variety.  My day started out well, with a good holeshot, riding Supersenior A,Even though they started all the A class's together, I managed to run 4th overall amongst the youngsters.  At least for a while.  I probably should have remembered that 60 year olds shouldnt run the pace of those "kids".. <G>
On the 2nd lap, I had the front end wash out in a fast corner and went down hard.  Getting up quickly, so as to not lose any positions, i found out that my Middle finger wouldnt work and Hurt like the blazes.  I could not use the front brake at all and had to change my grip to even hang on to the bike.    I stopped in the pit area and removed my glove and found the finger bent oddly.  Thinking I had dis-located the finger, I had several people try to pull it straight.  No Go...   So back out on the course...  Only to crash again.   Not using front brakes for me, doesnt work well...  Crashed a 3rd time.  By now, I was super frusterated, Over heated and tired.
2 more attempts in the pits to straighten the finger out only cost me more time and set me back further.  So just soldier on and finish.
3rd place.

Headed back to the camp area and my wife doused me with cold wet towels and helped get my body temps down.. I was weak and dizzy.   I heard there were a lot of people who had had to go to the medical center.

I went to the med center to have them look at the finger and get it splinted.  The doctor there said I most likely had a ruptured tendon and possible bone pulled loose from the finger. (he was almost spot on).

I thought I might be still able to race sat. or at least Sunday.
But each day, the pain was such that even a mere touch of the finger was pretty bad.  I have raced in pain before, ran the entire ISDE in Germany with a broken collarbone in 3 places, so racing in pain isnt anything new to me,  but I felt it wasnt worth risking the use of the finger at this point.
I was really bummed, as the Log road guys had built a really nice MX track, that I enjoyed riding and was looking forward to racing on.

Back home, I got x-rayed and found out the big knuckle was broken and the tendon on the end of my finger had pulled a piece of bone loose from the end of the finger.   I have to go see a hand specialist next week.   It was a smart thing to not race with it.

So the rest of my week-end did not go as planned, but I still enjoyed watching some great races.  Got to go thru the worlds largest swap meet and pick up some great deals.
Got to attend my 1st POG meeting and meet more great Penton owners!
And got a big surprise when my wife Sharon presented me with a Super nice Berkshire that she had bought from Ollie Martin! (the only problem is, its too nice to race!)

Yes, we will be back to VMD.   In fact, I have talked my Dad and a whole bunch of other people that they should go next year as well.

I'll carry a more than a few fond memories from the event.

Friday my wife was "enlisted" to help Dale B. with the POG lunch preparation.  For her help she was presented and proudly sported her official helper chef's hat presented by Dale.

Saturday evening/Sunday morning the Bean's almost looked beaming every time they were near the Berkshire bought from Ollie.  Bob's wife gave a very cautious eye to those who ventured near afraid someone was going to knock it over.

Sunday morning meeting Fred Hayes and his wife were a bonus.  My wife decided to give a bowl and some water to a theraphy dog that was panting heavily and had come with their friend.  As my wife sat down for a bit JP sat down next to her and began discussing the Penton family pets <priceless>.

All politics aside... The VMD event should be about keeping the sport alive, the people, and supporting the Penton Owners Group.

I got lucky a few years ago when Hodaka was the honored motorcycle. The Hodaka folks arranged for a truck to transport bikes from the west coast back to Mid Ohio for around $300. The company I work for has a plant in the Chicago area (Deans and Maries Dressings and Dips)that I arranged a visit to after the weekend (free airfare). I hooked up with my friend who has Bultacos and we drove over from there. It was a great weekend and was extremely affordable all said and done. Wish I could pull of that deal again!

Dick Mann and his west coast buddies used to do a deal where Jim Cameron would pull a trailer with the bikes and gear from the west coast to the eastern events.  They showed up a few times at the Ohio Valley BSA Owners Club trials back when it was an AHRMA national, plus numerous other events.

Jim Cameron was one heck of a nice guy, it was great to sit around in the evening and listen to those guys tell of the Big Bear run, Catalina Island, as well as many other historic events that I used to read about as a kid. The first time I looked towards the announcers stand and saw Dick Mann standing there I was thinking I needed to clean my glasses :)

There was a west coast rider that came with them that rode a big 500 single in the trials, I think it was a Royal Enfield, he sure put on a riding school for all in attendance.

It would be great to see more of you west coast guys at the event, but the time and expense involved is considerable.  Just keep in mind that Father Time keeps ticking away....

Just looked at the photos - great stuff.  I have to admit I find the PUCH in the final photo one of the prettiest bikes I've seen.  I mentioned Tim Ferguson earlier - he is actually on a "high pipe" Elsinore in one the photos.  Very Fast.

Mick - thanks for the "inside" info on Gary Ellis' TWO laps of the XC course, which I understand was run backwards this year.  That would have been fun and different for sure.  Glad to hear ya got a good motor out of the deal. ;)
