Post by: Gary Roach on August 06, 2011, 12:25:26 AM
The Six Days starts on Monday morning in Kotka, Finland.

Here's a link to the official 2011 ISDE site:
http://www.isde2011.com/

Here's a link to live scoring that will hopefully be up and running on Monday:
http://www.fim-isde-live.info/
(Finland is 7 hours ahead of us in the EST time zone.)

Here's a link to Steve Berkner's website that already has a lot of photos on it, plus it has helmet cam videos of the American chase rider pre riding the test sections (pretty cool!). Steve also does interviews, and has links to other websites:

Here's a direct link to his photos:

Here's a cool photo of Cory B getting ready to go test ride his dirt bike:

If I'm reading it correctly, it looks like Cory is 32nd overall and 18th in his class after the first day.

That looks right to me Mick.  His times on tests 5-8, which I believe are repeats of 1-4 in a different order, are looking really good.  It also appears he is the 4th American, behind Caselli, Bobbitt, and Abbott.

Looks like Cory should have been on the Trophy team even if he is young enough for the Junior team, he is really laying it down. Sounds like its pretty tight, rained a little and its slick, should be good conditions for him. I'm a little disappointed to see those non-traditional color helmets again this year.

I agree about the non-traditional helmets. Speaking about helmets, I got an email Friday from Cory's Mom. She said that when they arrived in Finland and collected their luggage, the bag that had Cory's helmet in it was missing.

Check out this email out that she sent me on Saturday:

Hi Gary!  The bag arrived today with some guy from Germany.
>> Believe it or not, the bag had no tags and he saw it at the
>> airport and opened it up.  The only things that had a name on
>> it was Cory's helmet and Leatt brace. He is a tire
>> dealer from Germany and he actually delivered it to us at the
>> Parc ferme'!
>>
>> How awesome is that?

I got another email from Val this morning:

> Hi GR,
>
> Well day 1 is done. Word on the street is that it is by far
> the hardest 1st day in a Six Days.
> (according to Fredette and Casseli, anyway). Cory did fine though.
> No problems at all really.  Ian Blythe got pulled over and got a
> speeding ticket, then broke a clutch, then broke a shifter,
> then took a nasty digger and dislocated his shoulder!  Cody
> Schafer just struggled all day after breaking a chain.  We
> are all impounded and I think they are all ready to go
> tomorrow so it is a long way from over.
>
> Update your tomorrow night!
>
> Rain again tomorrow!!!
>
> Val

Day 2 is over, and it looks like Cory had another pretty uneventful day. He's still sits 32nd OA, and 16th in class. All of the U.S. Women riders are out. Counting the number of riders who started out on Monday, and the amount that finished today, it looks like 62 riders have dropped out already.

Here are some videos:

My cousin is Destry Abbott and here is a link to his website where his wife is posting updates:

http://destryabbott.invisionzone.com/index.php?s=1109e457be35e982f033bf0b7bf4f2a7&showforum=3

For those of you on Facebook, you can also follow his updates there.

I know he rides the "other brand", but I have to give him credit for riding as hard as he does at 39. Go team USA (looks like they moved up to third overall today!)

Yeah, that's great to to hear about the Trophy Team. The Junior Team moved up to 5th today.

That's cool that Destry is your cousin. Looks like he's riding really good. Check out this neat photo that I found of him from Day 1 on this website:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/moottoriliitto/

Destry is a good dude. I raced against him back when we were both kids in D37 desert races, or I should say, we lined up on the start then he rode away and left me.

Fredette and Cassilli were not at Czecho 1982.  A hill about 18 miles out took out a ton of riders.  That was where Barry Higgins gave up. It took out Every water cooled bike entered. It also took out Joachim Sauer the German star that now works at KTM. Day one was Extremely tough and Day 4 took out over half of those left.  The rest was just tough. Mud holes and about 3 hills to push up between every check point (or is tht Czech point ?).  Here is a video of that event and the video makes it look easy. LOL. Sorry but it is in Slovik language. Over 17 minutes.

I do feel that those who finish this ISDE will have something to be extremely proud of.  A REAL ISDE EVENT !  Glad to see the ISDE get back to being an Endurance event.

Cory is really flying, I suspected that the slippery, rooty, and wet conditions would play into the hands of a kid from Ohio. :)

He is consistently setting 2nd and 3rd fastest US times in the tests for day 3. I think our Trophy team would be in the hunt for the overall if he had been on that team instead of the Junior. I dont know the current rule, did he have to race the Junior because of his age, or could he have ridden for the Trophy team?

Cory is still laying down 2nd and 3rd fastest US times behind Bobbitt and Caselli, and Caselli is leading E2 by almost 4 minutes looks like he is 5th or 6th overall. Bobbitt is 7th in E2, Abbott is 13th and Cory is 14th in E2. Barring disaster Caselli should win E2. Has an American ever won an ISDE class before?

No, there's no rule against him riding on the Trophy Team. The Teams are selected by the AMA ISDE Advisory Committee.

So, I don't know if they felt that Cory did not have enough ISDE experience to ride on the Trophy Team (this is Cory's 3rd year, and the Committee has selected riders to ride on the Trophy Team with no ISDE experience at all, or they wanted to try and have a strong Junior Team.

It doesnt make sense to me Gary, its not like Cory is an unknown, even if this is only his 3rd ISDE he is a proven winner. I could see it a couple of years ago when the Junior team had Cory, Bobbitt and maybe Jarrett when the almost won, but this year it seems like Cory should have been an obvious choice for the Trophy team, especially in Finland where the conditions were not going to be dry/desert like the last 3-4 years. I've never even heard of the other three guys on the Junior team, which does not mean they arent great riders, and they ARE doing well in the Junior competition. With the times Cory is throwing down it seems like it was a mistake to leave him off the Trophy team. IMO of course.

EDIT: I just looked at the overall classification after day 4, Cory would be the 3rd placed rider on the Trophy team, 30th overall, if he had been on there.

It doesn't look like anything changed in the standings after Day 4. I got an email from Cory's Mom today, and she said that Cory had to ride 3 of the tests with a brake problem, and that explains why his test scores were down.

Kurt Caselli had a great day, winning 3 of the 6 tests.

Check out this Day 4 update with a photo of Tom Penton: http://www.enduro360.com/2011/08/11/gone-racing/2011-isde-finland-day-4-results/

Both the Trophy and Junior teams are still in tact, and with 2 days to go, anything can happen.

Dick Lague from IGNITION3 sent this email about viewing some of their footage from the event.

Paul

IGNITION3 is currently in Kotka Finland covering the International Six Days Enduro.

We have some great video on line that we thought you might like to see.

The ISDE is an off-road enduro motorcycle event that we have shot since 2002.  The competitors ride 200 + miles per day and have to do all their own maintenance, as well as going VERY FAST on the special tests.  A DVD will be released by IGNITION3 in November 2011.

Jon and Jeff are in Finland cranking out daily video updates in HD that we are posting our our site //www.isde.tv   along with the text and photo reports.  We think you will enjoy them.

The video updates are also on our YouTube site @ //www.Youtube.com/ignition3

If this can help you, please feel free to link or embed this videos in your site.

Let me know if you have any questions or need any help.

Uh oh, Cory is not showing up in the last test for day 5. I hope Cory is OK and its just a bike problem. Caselli also had a bad couple of tests and dropped a lot of time. Destry Abbott has a hole in his swingarm from the chain going right through the slider and into the arm. Sounds like a TRUE ISDE the way they were 20-30 years ago.
