Title: 'Piner Motor swaping
Post by: wfopete on August 22, 2011, 12:10:31 PM
I'm thinking about putting a different motor in my 74 Jackpiner next year.  Probably a 250 but a 400 isn't out of the question.  Are these swaps pretty much a "bolt in" affair or is there quite a bit of fabricating & massaging work involved?

For those of you that have done this, how did you like the results?

the motor will bolt right in. but as i recall you have the earlier model with the 32 mm forks and full width rear wheel. you should at least probably try to find a set of 35 forks. they can take the additional faster riding better. i don't know of anyone who has run the full width hub on the back with a 250 or larger but i gues its doable. remember that you will need to swap out your carb and pipe too.      chi jer

I have most of a 400 available that I'm possibly looking to sell.  I have all of the motor, pipe, carb, frame tank etc.  Shoot me an email if you want more details / info.

I ran into a few issues on mine. I have GEM reeds & a Mikuni on it though and that caused most of the fitment problems.

Mike,

How does your 75's motor work (before/after) with the GEM/Mikuni set up? How does that motor compare to your 82 model (I believe KTM went to a reed valve set up that year)?

I have a 81 GS250 and was thinking of putting an 82 cylinder/intake on it because of the reed valve.

The bike hits really hard. It also has an ACE pipe on it. There's almost no bottom end. Would be a great mx motor, but I'm a woods rider. I'm going to put a "torque" pipe on it and an 11 oz. flywheel weight on the PVL to tame it down a bit and make more woods worthy.  So I would say it's a lot more peaky than the 82. (which by the way, I'm stuffing one of my 495 motors into)

Pete,

Take that description, and magnify it x10 and you have the description of the 400 power delivery. Wicked fast if you can harness it, but it takes the skills of someone like Carl Cranke, or Cory Buttrick to effectively ride one in the woods. I dont possess that skill level.
