Title: Carb Cleaning with Pine Sol
Post by: 454MRW on October 24, 2011, 07:48:33 PM
While reading some posts on Thumper Talk tonight at work, just passing the time, (you guys won't tell, right?) I ran across a post about soaking a carb in Pine Sol for 1-3 days with great results, and don't remember if this has ever been mentioned here. Mike

Simple Green would work much better and cheaper.

Which Simple Green product are you referring to? I looked and found most to be twice as expensive as Pine Sol, 16 oz @ $2.75 or 2 liter refil @ $5.96 vs 48-60 oz of Pine Sol @ $2.97 or 100 oz, which is almost 3 liters for $5.47
What am I missing? Mike

You don't have to use Simple Green full strength, 50/50 is strong but for a soak 25%SG and 75% water would work well. Gets cheaper as it gets more diluted.

I use a %50/50 mix for most grease removal and it only soaks in for a few minutes. Think what a 3 day soak would do. And a gallon of simple green is about $10 and it seems Pine sol is about $6-8 gallon. So it may be a wash (pardon the pun) as far as price. But Simple green is made for grease removal and is great for washing your bike. I use it on all my bikes. I will dull polished magnesium, but so does everything else including water.

I was just passing the tip along from Thumpertalk and Marks Swap meet. I actually have some Pine Sol at home that I may try on a crusty old 79 CR250R carb that came with the crusty old CR250R I picked up this summer to see how it does. I may eventually have to compare the effectiveness of the two products.
I hope the "Uncle Sam's" version of the Simple Green didn't cost taxpayers as much as the legendary $50 hammers of yore, lol. Mike
