Hey Guys.
I'm wondering... Should I take a motor apart, or can I just carefully use a paint stripper with the engine assembled?
I'm concerned about the seals & gaskets...
Thanks, Dave H.
I don't like the idea of paint stripper, especially on Magnesium cases that are prone to corrosion, so after carefully taping up all possible entry points including around seal areas, such as around the crank seal on the ignition side and the countershaft seal area, and shifter and kick starter seaks, I blast the engine with plastic media in my blasting cabinet. The plastic media does not damage the Magnesium or aluminum components. Before painting it is manditory to wash down the engine with carb or brake cleaner to remove any left over traces of oil or contaminant. Mike

Mike,
I was going to ask you a question about painting engines, so this presents itself as timely. Other than blasting with plastic media, how do you treat these cases with primer and or paint?
Also what paint (codes) products do you use on the engine cases?
Thanks,
Tony
I have just recently started using Duplicolor etching primer, DAP1690 which works well on many different surfaces and many different types of top coats. In the past I have mainly used the engine ceramic paint DE1650 aluminum color clear coated with DE1636, but recently have been using the Lacquer DAL1679 silver metallic clear coated with DAL1695 Lacquer, which is not as much humidity and application time sensitive as the ceramic paints, and very close in color for both the frame and engine components, and much easier to touch up if needed. I am looking forward to trying this clear coat which is much more durable than even the Laquer clear and is highly recommended for a durable professional finish that is gas resistant even on gas tanks from what I have read. It is SprayMax Urethane 2K clear coat http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd_2_part_2k_aerosol.cfm Mike
I corrected the silver Lacquer paint part # (DAL 1679).

this is how i do mine, after the cases are ready to paint, first,i use duplicolor engine hi temp engine enamel 500 degree primer. (DE1612) then i use duplicolor hi temp 500# cast coat aluminum enamal(DE1650)these are both available at advance auto. they used to be at autozone too but not anymore, at least not here by me. the only problem is that these don't hold up well to gasoline,(like when you tickle a bing carb) how i resolved this is after painting the duplicolor i then paint the whole shooting match with krylon clear gloss lacquer. (krylon 7032) i usually put on a couple coats of that and it makes it hold so much better to gasoline getting on it. the only place that i can find the krylon clear is at sears/ sears hardware. i hope that helps.. chi jer
As I suspected, a wealth of info... Thanks Guys.

Hey Mike,
Where have you found the silver metallic lacquer (DAL 1979), I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Tom
I get it from my local NAPA auto parts store. It is a little cheaper there than at O'reilly's auto parts that also carry Duplicolor paints. I may have listed the part # incorrectly it is Dal 1679 not 1979. There are a lot of online sources as well. Mike

Thanks Mike,
You had it right in your first post, I messed it up. Anyway, thanks...I found it through NAPA, they ordered it for me.
Tom
I actually went back and corrected it, and noted it at the end of the post so no one else would stumble across it, and wonder what was the right #.
Age has it's benefits, but right now I can't remember what they are, LOL. Mike
