Title: plastic clarke gas tanks
Post by: chicagojerry on April 10, 2012, 10:00:57 PM
hi all. anyone ever tried putting a clarke plastic mc5 tank on a high breather frame? i recently picked up 250 HS for chuck cooper in ok and i think the tank was one of these but i'm not 100% sure.it sat up a little higher in the back but it seemed to fit alright. if they do indeed fit it may be another option to the dilemma of alcohol laden gas in fiberglass tanks. thanks for any input...    chijer

Seems to me there was some discussion on this topic a couple of years ago, I don't  think it will fit, something about the angle of the backbone being flatter on the highbreather. but then I could be wrong..it would be cool if it did.

i know a stock fiberglass tank will not work, i've tried it. but if the tank on chuck cooper's was indeed a clarke mc5 tank, it fit, although it sat up slightly in the back.  i may have to try one to find out for sure..    i was hoping to hear definitive confirmation one way or the other here.    chi jer

I've used the Clarke MC5 tank on a high-breather.
Because it does sit up high at the back, I substituted a layer of inner tube instead of the standard foam, between the tank and the frame. I also used a heat gun to soften up the plastic so that it sits down on the frame as much as possible.
Otherwise no big issues, it has worked for me for a lot of years now.

Gave mine a fit; the only way to look right would be (remove) or heat gunn[B)][:0] the back edge that jacks the tank up in the back, but some of the frame rails might show under the tank around petcocks. ho-kee po-kee.:(

I would like to put a plastic tank on my '73 six days.  Does anyone know of a tank that will work?  Does Clarke make a tank that will fit this bike?  I am not familiar with the high breather frame.

Thanks!

I have a Hoss plastic tank.  Same sort of issues -- it fits but doesnt reallyfit!

I think I have it for sale on here somewhere -- it is big and ugly orange but otherwise nice.:):)
