Title: Starting the KTM 250
Post by: Gary Smith on April 16, 2012, 10:28:25 PM
My bike has a bing with no choke. It has a lever on the bars that controls a small slide in the main slide. How the heck do I use this system? to start the bike. Gary Smith

The slide in the carb is actually a choke. When the cable is slack, the internal slide chokes the carb, and when it is tightened by turning the lever, the choke is off. This system is generally used more for richening up the mixture when a long hi-speed run is made to keep from burning up the piston. The rubber tipped tickler on the Bing carb is used to start the bike, just hold it down until gas trickles out of the carb onto the ground or engine, then kick it like you mean it, and it should start right up! Thanks mike, do you know if there is some sort of bushing that goes between the big air boot and the small rubber transition behind the carb? Gary

Gary.....First, Welcome to the magical world of Pentonia.

Second, if you don't have a manual and parts catalog for your bike, I suggest you contact Al Buehner. He will take care of you.

Gary,
I don't have a chassis manual for the 82 KTM, but it seems like I have seen a rubber bushing in the diagram for some of the models within the early 80's. Mike

The way they did the air boot on this bike makes me feel that there must have been changes in the bike when they were in production. My bike was built in Jan.82 Anyway I have all the manuals and they dont show the transition. Gary Smith

Gary,

In double checking my parts lists, there is no rubber spacer (adapter) that fits onto the intake (mouth) of the Bing carb. The air boot stretches over it and held in place with a clamp.

The MX250 has a large long air boot.
The GS250 has a small short air boot.
