Title: Cylinder sleeves - KTM engine
Post by: rob w on May 17, 2012, 08:26:26 AM
Someone told me you do not press the cylinder sleeve out of a '73 - '79 KTM for removal. That they have to be machined out.

Is this true ?

Thanks,
Bob

That is not true. I am not a machinist, but when I sent 250 and 400 cylinders to be resleeved to Forest Stahl, he heated them up and pressed the old sleeves out. When I received the resleeved cylinders, the old sleeves were returned with them. I still have a couple of used sleeves on my work shelf.
The 175 (6 fin) cylinders are the ones that have to be machined out. These were throw away cylinders and I had replacement sleeves made up to fit them. The opening must be carefully machined to fit the diameter of the new sleeve which is then press fit into the opening.

I sorta thunk so. Thank you Alan for your knowledge, and clearing that up for me.
