Title: Steven Winter hospitalized
Post by: 454MRW on June 16, 2012, 10:05:56 AM
Yesterday, my 16 year old son, Steven, ran his dirt bike into a friends bike and suffered an impailment to his right chest area. He is recovering in the ICU at Carle Hospital in Champaign, IL and doing well after having the top 1/3 of his right lung removed. Prayers are welcome at this point, and I will post updates when possible. Thank you, Mike

We are praying also. One of the hazards of living life is, sometimes it is hazardous. We are so glad the impailment / puncture was not on the left side. Take care, Hank and Elaine

They removed the intubation tube around noon on Saturday, and he is making a remarkable recovery so far, already eating, talking, and in good spirits, with full memory of the events, and worried about the condition of the bike, (like that mattered, geez).
Stevens cousin Nic, who was at Mid Ohio last year and is going again this year, actually is the hero who immediately picked him up while semi conscious and carried him back to the house on our 4 wheeler where I drove him to meet the ambulance while Nic held a cold compress on his open chest wound and ultimately saved his life. The ambulance also transported him to meet a Medivac copter in record time. The doctor says he should have a full recovery and the removed portion of his lung and ribs should not cause him any future problems.
I have a lot of people to thank including all of you for your prayers and well wishes. Thank you all so very much. Words simply can not express my gratitude...Mike

That is really good news, Being a Dad is one of the things I am most thankful for.  When my daughter had to have her gall bladder removed it was very stressful for all of us. I realize that is nothing compared to what some of you have endured. still I am thankful..Not that I think I am special because I am not, I am thankful for all of my life, the good the bad and everywhere in between. I am thank everyone on this board too.

This afternoon Steven was moved from the ICU into what they are referring to as the "step down room" one floor down room 6612, which although resembles the ICU with the same equipment, has a lot more recovery rooms and the visitation restrictions is lighter. He has stood and walked around the bed and is eating more solid food and although he has a sligtly higher temperature, they say it is all managable. He has blown a repeated 500 on the air volume test, which is what they are looking for to start out with.
Nic got to go to the hospital with me and see him today. What a reunion! They are more like brothers than Cousins. I am so thankful! Mike

Thanks Bawb.
Today Steven was moved to the North Tower Pediatrics floor 8 room 8456, and the first actual Doctor that I have seen (while I was there) besides the surgeon that operated on him, referred to him as that "Miracle Boy", so I guess they are as impressed as I have been. He ate some Roast Beef and mashed potatoes and was feeling good, although very sore with reduced pain meds taken orally now, and no fever, another very good sign. I will get to visit with him tomorrow afternoon and them work will take me away to the Corvette show near Chicago for the rest of the week and weekend, but its only a 3 hour drive from him, so I will probably visit him again on Thursday evening if I can get away in time. If he hadn't shown such a remarkable recovery, I would not be working, believe me. Mike

that is really great news, just after my Son was born... 87' they put him into ICU  "baby style" and I can remembering how helpless I felt. I could not hold him or even touch him. It was horrible.. I was sure glad when we got to take him home.. what a relief.. Glad to hear the good news for you too.. Keep the Faith, we will continue to pray, of course.
