Title: PVL
Post by: fastwillie8568 on October 11, 2012, 05:09:25 PM
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons fo installing a PVL on a 1974 Jackpiner, what can I expect and how hard is it to install?

I installed a PVL on my Yamaha MX250 in a short time (less than two hours).  Worked great, not difficult at all.  Chicago Jerry has them on his bikes and again, no problem.  The hardest part on my application was getting the timing dialed in.  Usually much faster response time, less flywheel effect.

I have one on my 250 piner (with a 12 0z. flywheel) and will be putting one on my 495. Very Easy to install, and it can be a wee bit tricky to set the timing.

Mike- please report back on impressions if you put a PVL on a 495. I have the stock twin coil/twin plug Motoplat and stock Bing. I'm guessing the PVL might have a slightly lighter flywheel weight and be a bit quicker revving.

You will love the PVL on your Piner. The bottom end is over built for 175 cc's so the PVL will let it rev faster with no loss of low end power.

If your moto-splat is not dead now it will be.

Penton Racing products also offers a selection of 5 diffrent rotor weights for the PVL ignition. These weights are made of brass & simply install to the outside of the rotor using 4 allen screws. Rotor weight choices are from 6,8,11,14,&17 ounces alowing a broad range of tunability for diffrent track conditions and rider preferance for power delivery.

I have a PVL on a maico and it has worked fine, and I found it really easy to instal and time, way easier than a motoplat.. If I could have put a Motoplat on the 74 maico, I would have done it, only because a motoplat creates spark at a lower RPM then a PVL does.

I'm using the 11oz. flywheel right now and it definatly made a difference for woods riding. Doesn't stall as easy amd much more managable in a woods setting.

Have yet to get a pvl for the 495. That may be awhile. Drums are more important right now.

I prefer the bare PVL rotor with no flywheel weight for 175s and smaller. Its easier for it to fall off the pipe, but much much easier to get it back on the pipe. 250s and bigger I like the biggest weight.
