Title: '96 KTM exc hot running question
Post by: Mike Hufnagel on October 22, 2012, 07:57:34 PM
My friends 96 300 mxc doesn't like to start when it gets hot but when it cools down it does. Pulled the plug and it was fouled.(running a ngk bp9es I believe. not sure of the correct plug designation, but it was a 9, which seems a little cold to me) Anyway, Comp was fine, 147 psi, and reeds were good.

Any thoughts?

Haven't got into the carb yet, which I suspect is the problem. and the air screw was 2.25 turns out.

Hi Mike, Does this KTM have the origional ignition? This seems like a stator failure but could be as simple or inexpensive as a wire connector or sparkplug cap. The heat may be adding resistance to the system or expanding the already loose electrical connections. You may want to check resistance between stator wires when bike is cold, then ride the bike and check resistance while engine is hot. 1996 stators were subject to fail every couple seasons from my experience.

Black +  Red -  = 1.7 k
Red +  Black -  = 1.7 k
Black + Green -  = 165 ohms + or- 20 ohms
green + Black -  = 165 ohms + or - 20 ohms
Red + Green -   = 1.7 k + or - .2 ohms
green + Red -   = 1.7 k + or - .2 ohms
Yellow + Yellow - = 1.0 ohms + or - .5 ohms
  This should help,

Here's what I got

Black-red = 1.156k
black - green = 132 ohms
red-green = 1.269k
yellow-yellow= 2.68 nf

Doesn't look good, does it?
