Title: Jack Piner 175
Post by: ronharris on November 11, 2012, 08:52:37 PM
Hi all
New to the board and happy to have a place to come and talk Pentons. I just purchased a 74 Jack Piner That I am restoring and a 250. What are some of the things to look for that are on a JP bike. The tank was blue but does not have the indentation at the rear of the tank like I have seen on line with a lot of the JP bikes.
What exactly identifies a JP 175? Also will be getting another 400 with a orange frame That is missing some parts. I want to restore these correct.

Thank you all for your help
Ron

Hi Ron, Welcome to the group.

Engine Identification
To determine the year of a KTM engine, you need to find the engine number. For this, look for the numbers stamped on the engine case, just below the bottom cooling fin of the cylinder, on the ignition side of the engine.  The engine number is coded with the first digit determining the year and the next two digits determining what size the engine is, and the last 5 digits would be the serial number.  If the first digit is a "3" then the year is 1973, a "4" would be 1974, and so forth.  If the second and third digit is one of the following, this would be the engine size:  51=125cc, 52=175cc, 54=250cc, 55=400cc. Thus a engine number beginning with 654 would indicate that it is a 1976 250cc.

If its a 74.5 it might have a "watermelon" tank which does not have the knee indentions like the "toaster" tank.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the reply. I have the years for the two bikes. they are both 1974. The 175 is supposed to be a Jack Piner. I need to know  how to identify a Jack Piner bike. It was painted and I have restored the paint I want to make sure everything else on the bike is correct.

The only thing that identifies it as a 175 is the frame and engine numbers, the rest of the bike other than gelcoat color is identical from 175-400 and could be easily switched. The Jackpiner (175) was supposed to be blue, but I have seen many many Pentons with the wrong color tank and airbox for the size bike it actually was. Get us the frame and engine numbers and we can verify that it actually is a 175.

Thanks everyone. That is the one I was looking for Rob. I matches that bike exactly. Now I need to get to replacing a few parts (fenders, grips, cables) mine has an enduro light (built in to the number plate). That might have been swapped out at some point. Where were these pictures taken. Would like to visit.

Unfortunately, for a visit, they were taken in the motorcycle equivalent of Brigadoon.

Hello,  It looks like the setting for the Penton display was at the AMA Museum in Ohio.    joe

Isn't there a big vintage race in Ohio? Would like to get to that this year. Still trying to figure out what this orange 400 Penton I am getting is. I'm thinking of keeping that one to ride. Need to find some parts for that one though. Some of them were stolen.

The big Vintage race in Ohio is called Mid Ohio, usually in July, always at the Mid Ohio sports car complex and everybody here has been there at 1 time or another.
