Greetings to all,
'Obviously new to the site, I am about to embark on restoring my 6 Day ser.# v416.(//) I'm hoping I got a couple of pics in here but if history is any teacher I did not. At any rate what I have here is my own bike that I'd bought used in '70. Having sold it to a cousin somewhere around '75, he in turn sold it to another cousin, who eventually put it under his deck covered with a tarp for 20+ yrs.
Fifteen yrs. ago cousin #2 called and asked if I'd like to come and get it which of course I did and lo and behold here's my old Penton, looking scruffy but with the same tires, cables, and everything. Just like I'd seen it last.
A quick 'spank up' and I was riding it again! That was the good part of the story. From there it went into an unused stall in the barn and sat for 15 yrs. (shame on me) neglected but always on my project list. Well, it's time, and here I am.
I do have the great good fortune to be pals with a guy who's wrenched and raced the old stuff and still works in the same dealership the bike was sold out of in '68. Plus another pal who is arguably one of the best custom motorcycle painters anywhere. I know because I worked for him for 5 yrs. doing all his moulding and prep work. Helpful things indeed.
I've been cruising thru the forums and suppliers as I put together my parts list, which has been very helpful, although I can't help but notice the steel tankers are getting a bit tough to find stuff for. No real shocker there.
The present plan is to get it up and running again before breaking it down for the cosmetics. Compression is great, spark is great, fuel/carb stuff = trouble in paradise. No 'show stoppers' but it might as well be done now as when everything's all pretty again.
At any rate, let the games begin! 'Hopefully the pics went up.
Cheers....!

I seem to be having trouble getting pics up (as usual). I tried the click and drag from my documents, the same from my Penton pic file, and the insert image icon from the toolbar to no avail.
I'd really like to see what you guys think of the handlebars on this bike. I haven't seen them on any of the bikes on the site. They're narrow, with a pretty steeply curved cross support and I'm pretty sure they came on the bike. Thought's, suggestions, direction would be welcome on either topic.
Thanks in advance,
Fred

Click return to album...easiest way for me, then put cursor on picture and 4 links will appear.
Left click on the bottom link which starts with (img), then right click on it and select copy.
Open a new tab opr browser window, got to message board and paste the code in your text on a new line for each picture, and post your message and you are finished. Mike

Well Randy, I might have gotten it (?) Things went well 'till the the right click on img whereby I got a different window with no copy option. Resorting to a 'punt', I clicked and drug the codes to the post which appears to have worked. Here we go..., fingers crossed ! V416 in the light of day after 15 yrs.

Sorry Fred, I cannot access your photos. When I click on the web address you posted, it just takes me to Photobucket's Home Page.
Tony
Hi Fred,
I was able to unscramble the direct links to 4 photos in the link that you posted, and I'm able to see your bike, but the photos are so small you can't really see the bars. I can see that it has the correct pipe, shocks, long chain guard, and short air box.
But there's some issue with the direct links, and every time I tried to post the pictures here, there is a message that pops up saying, "Your image was linked incorrectly, please visit your account for the correct link". Maybe a fellow Pogger with a little more computer savvy than me can figure them out.
Here are the direct links:
http://photobucket.com/albums/o687/bnkate/th_DSC00764.jpg
http://photobucket.com/albums/o687/bnkate/th_DSC00765.jpg
http://photobucket.com/albums/o687/bnkate/th_DSC00772.jpg
http://photobucket.com/albums/o687/bnkate/th_DSC00771.jpg
The only way I'm able to see the photos is by opening a new web browser and then manually type the link into the address bar.
Try this:
http://photobucket.com/albums/o687/bnkate
Dale Fisher
Penton Owners Group - Memberships
Facebook - Cheney Twinshock Racing Group - Administrator
1970 Six-Day 125
1971 Six-Day 125 (Dave Fisher's)
1973 Jackpiner 175
1974 Berkshire 100
And some silly other bikes...
It still does not work. The links that Gary Roach listed do not work either, but if you eliminate the following from Gary's links they work. ie - http://photobucket.com/albums/o687/bnkate/th_DSC00772.jpg you have to eliminate "th_" from each link. Then you can view the photos.
It is not the way it should work, it is a work around.
Tony
I ran the photos through ImageShack and finally got them to work.

I have a very close cousin to that machine, V401.
Looks like all it needs is the missing stinger on the end of the expansion chamber. joe
Great! Thanks you guys for hashing out the pic problem for me. It's no doubt obvious now that my computer skills are rudimentary at best. Also, apologies for the delayed response.
Re: the last posts, yes, it is mercifully still all there. The stinger was lost back when I was riding it, a victim of laying over against the side of my pickup. 'Easy fix although I'll have to find a replacement piece of material from memory. It seems it was something like 4" long (?).
Re: V401, these bikes may have been on the 'line' at the same time. You appear to have me beat by 15 units :-( Is yours restored or a survivor?
Currently I'm trying to coax my choke cable assembly out of the carb (corrosion in there) so as to break down the whole thing for a dip in the carb cleaner. It's fighting me. Then I'll need to find a replacement rubber boot for between the carb and air cleaner box too at some point.
By the way, 'anyone recognize those handlebars? They were on there when I first got the bike in '70 but may well be aftermarket. When I filled out the steel tank survey I couldn't answer as to whether I had a MX or enduro and thought the bars might have been a key. (?)
At any rate, thanks again for the pic solution and I'll check back in later in the day.
Cheers, Fred

Thanks Sean, It is a nice survivor huh? No one's more amazed than me that I got it back after all those years and I'd bet a months pay once I get the fuel system cleaned out it'll fire right up just like it always did. I remember running it into water once that was way deeper than I'd thought (up to my butt) and after I'd drug it up out of that hole I pulled the plug out, turned the bike upside down, cranked it to pump out the water, and went on my way.
Now that I've said that I hope I didn't jinx myself (chuckle). I see you have two of the same .....Cool, very cool! Fred

Fred, hi and a late welcome to the POG,
you are killing me :-))
i have V1346 Berkshire and V1646 Six-Days
i would love to have your V416 or something close to that low # :-))
Mr. Danik is holding my low # bike for me, maybe someday i will get it - LOL -
hey, i have W483ST Penton/Wassell Trials and there are less than 1000 of those made, i guess they were a big seller - LOL -
enough said, if someone finds a low # 1968 S/Tkr. let me know :-))

Sean I couldn't agree more, and having ridden in that mid 60's thru mid 70 dirt bike era and having known a lot of those old marques from then, I did then and do now believe the steel tankers to be the best looking of the lot. Not that others lacked or even exceeded in other ways, but those pretty steel tanks, even back then, set them off. And then there was that snotty BRAAAP BAP BAP BAP from that stinger.
In truth, while as I'd mentioned in the first post, I want to get V416 back up and running before it's broke down for resto. I just really also want to hear it again before that long process begins (It's been 15 yrs). But that's just a personal/nostalgia thing. I've been going through the posts gathering info. and once I get fuel through it again it'll fire. Then the breakdown begins. Fred

Checkcrew, thanks for the welcome! But I have to say if I'm killing you with the V416 then we're dying together. A few posts prior to yours gives us both Rocket with V401, and Sean with a V098 or '99.

Well Sean, like a pal of mine always says "there's nothing left to do but do it":D. I've been wringing my hands and grinding my teeth going thru the old forums and photo archives and I think you have a leg up if you do 098/099 first. I mean, how many 'other' parts did they have to use up when less than 100 bikes had been produced? It's probably not that simple, but it sure is a nice thought.., no?
V416 OneMoreTime
Over much debate in my mind and with some of my dirt bike buddies around Indy I think V099 will have a new home next weekend. Another POGer and myself have pretty much come to a trade. We do have the clause to offer it to me first if he ever sells it, but I think he'll enjoy it for a long time after she's restored. I pick up my V214 in March so that will get some much needed time and love. I'll get pictures of her once she is back home.

V099 is changing hands? That had to involve some serious pondering. 'Sounds like it's going to a good home, and the first refusal caveat had to smooth the decision making process, that and having it stay within POG. 'Sounds good. I'd of walked around with a knotted brow for a few days as I'm sure you did, but I gotta say, it sounds OK.
Plus.., with v214 you've still got me beat by 202 bikes[8D]. 'Looking forward to some pics of it!

Thanks gents. I know there are a few things amiss (those fenders) etc. but here and there along the way I'd just hit a brick wall. Those handlebars are obviously wrong but they were on the bike in 1970 when I bought it and I always liked them so they're original to me I guess.
The jacket hanging behind the bike I'd gotten when I was 16 (I'm 61) and I thought I'd add it to the pic just for fun.
I've learned a tremendous amount not only about my old bike but also about the whole Penton story. Due not only to the hands-on part, but also from the help and info gathered here at POG and Ed Youngblood's book. What a great project this has been!
Thanks again for the attaboy's.., Fred

Mike and Dennis, thank you both very much! And to all who've helped me out these past 9 months thank you all too. I know I've been MIA the past month or so but that was due to using the search function here at POG for my last 8 or 10 queries, each of which provided the info. I needed at the time.
Rereading this thread from 11/14/12, my very first post here at POG, I gave a brief rundown of V416's history with me beginning in 1970.
What I feel is of importance, and haven't mentioned prior, is that V416 will pass to my eldest son when I go 'toe's up'. He is a far more accomplished mechanic than I ever was or ever will be, plus, he has his own brief 'history' with the Penton, and so having heard all my stories, cousin's stories, and his own memories, will insure that with his own concerns and attachments coupled with my work these past months, V416 be ready to stand another 45 yrs. I'm pretty darn satisfied with that.
I'm kind of hoping that makes up for those nasty fenders.
Cheers, Fred

Thanks Sean, I figured I'd hear from you:D My Penton and I are getting 'broke in' together since I haven't been on it for almost 23 yrs. and it's just great. I'd forgotten what a light quick bike it was. The first few times out I felt like a complete stranger on it. 'Starting to get my sea legs back though. Why on earth did I wait so long?
By the way, you did save yourself at least one of your ST's, no? It sounds like your collection's going thru an overhaul. Fred

Fred,
Your bike looks great! It provides me motivation to get some of my projects moving.
I was lucky enough to take custody of Sean's bikes for a while.
V 213 is now together, running and totally complete with all its correct parts (thanks to help from the great POG membership!).
V 99 is in the "parts gathering" phase. I have most of the unobtainable parts at this point and hope to start in on the restoration in the near future.
Sean,
If you are ever in the neighborhood, swing in and take a spin.
Shane
Well Shane, thanks for checking in and also for the pat on the head on my project. It's good to hear Sean's V213 is up and going and 099 is on it's way close behind. I'd like to see these two bikes in some pics somewhere along the line after hearing about them from Sean over these past 8 or 9 months.
And Sean, I'd get over to Shane's at some point and take that 'spin' he's offering. I've been pushing V416 and myself a bit more the last few times out and each time out it sinks in a bit more why I liked this bike so much back in 'olden times'.
'Loud little devil though with that stinger! [8D]
Cheers, Fred

Gent's, just for fun here's a pic of my grand daughter on V416 a few weeks back. 'Never been on a bike of any kind in her life up to that point. Her dad put her on the seat and she immediately leaned forward, grabbed the handlebars, fumbled around for a place to put her feet like she'd done it before, and just after I took the pic, say's "PUSH ME!".
I just may have a third generation lining up for my old bike after all, and my own mini version of the Penton Future Project.:D
'Just thought you all might get a chuckle out of it.
