Title: John Penton Film Project Relaunched!
Post by: mxfiles on November 16, 2012, 10:23:08 AM
Good morning Poggers (is this a term for you fine folks?)

Thought I would let you all know if you haven't been notified by Kickstarter that our relaunch is live. Please take time to check out the new video and pledge if you can. We have 60 days this time and half as much to raise since we are going for production hard costs to get the story "in the can".

We could also use help in spreading the word. We need some "Evangelists" out there to help push to everyone they know who might care and support.

Thanks again and have a nice weekend!

Best,

Todd

Hi fellow Poggers,
This is the second time around for this project. With the changes that were made this is doable and it's time to "git-er done".

I am exited about Todd going over to KTM in Austria to do some of his filming. This is something that is out of the range of our POG volunteers to do and it needs to be done now. The clock is ticking. Al Born, Leroy Winters, Dane Leimbach, Dave Mungenast, Rod Bush, Ted Penton, Bill Penton, Ike Penton, Erik Trunkenpolz and Fritz Dengel are all gone. They all played a role in the John Penton story and thank goodness for Ed Youngblood coming around when he did and wrote the "John Penton and the Off-Road Motorcycle Revolution" book. He was able to capture their stories in print. Now is the time to record the stories on video where we can watch and hear those involved. This is a positive uplifting story that the world needs to see and hear.

I have made my pledge to get this funding going. I know that some of you will not be able help out on this because of financial challenges you are facing in this tough economy. This means that the rest of us will need to dig a little deeper to compensate and I encourage you to do so.

I agree with Al, the goal is much lower and Todd has 60 days this time to hit the mark.  Get the word out to every one you can and make your donation early.  On kickstarter people seem to jump on when they see a project is marching towards it goal.  Maybe some none bikers will help!

Thanks Al and Ken!

We're plugging away..."getting traction"as we all say. We had some great discussions with new potential backers at the AMA Hall of Fame Legends event in Las Vegas last weekend. I'm pretty optimistic we'll get there!

Here is the promo card we were passing out during the bike show on Saturday:

Have a nice Thanksgiving all and we look forward to your continued support!

It looks like the pledge drive to get the John Penton Story funded is gaining traction like a new 450 x 18 Metzler on a tacky MX track.

I have made my pledge and I encourage others to do the same. Pledge amounts start at $ 10.00 and run as high as $ 10,000.00 and two folks have already made $ 10,000.00 pledges.

I am pretty sure that most of you reading this have been around John Penton a time or two.  You know how his enthiesium is infectious and how passionate he is about the history of the Penton Sportcycle and motorcycling in general, do you not agree that it would be awesome to have the Penton story captured in a documentary so others can feel his passion and hear the Penton story?

How many of us have seen John Penton patiently talk with folks and sign autograph after autograph at VMD and many other venues, never turning ANYONE away, ALWAYS making time for others. How many modern so-called heroes would do the same?

Many folks have mailed John Penton items to sign, gas tanks, number plates, route arrows and many other items, John always makes time to take care of every request. NOW is the time for us to repay John Penton for all he has done for us, starting at only $ 10.00.

I know that meeting John Penton back in 1968 changed my life, and my life is much better for having met John Penton, how about you ?

Please post the information about the fund raising for the John Penton documentary on other websites that you feel would be  appropriate, we need to network through out the vintage community as much as possible, actually, even many of the modern MC websites could also be very beneficial to the cause....

Thank you,
Paul

Hi All!

Thanks again for everyone's support! I don't think it matters to everyone but I realized the other day that I can officially be a member of the Penton Owners Group because I have a Penton! (not in perfect condition...yet...check pics below). So today, I filled out the form and sent in 5 years worth of being a Pogger!

I'll feel better now banging on you all to keep pushing on the movie... :)

More than likely this bike will be put back together and used as a recreation scene prop for the Penton film. I did it though!

Have a good week all!

Best,

Todd

Hi Todd,
Let us be the first to "officially" welcome you to the group and thank you for your efforts to create a film about the Penton's and the Penton brand. We have made our pledge to this important project and are looking forward with anticipation to its completion. We are evangelizing our off road friends to get them to support it (with money!) as well.
It looks like you have an important piece of off road motorcycle history in your possession and you should fill out the "steel tanker questionaire" available through the home page. We feel that this information will be invaluable to many Penton owners and everyone with a steel tanked Penton should fill it out and send it in before the deadline.
Thanks once again - Mike and Karen Schulz

Thanks Mike!

Will do...rumor has it from the guy I bought the bike from ($600 on Craigs List. Good deal?) was that the bike belonged to a girl friend of Malcolm Smith...I'll have to ask him about that Hah!

I look forward to getting it going to use a prop for recreation footage in the movie.

Best,

Todd

Paul---just checked V 1134

Is it rare?
Title: John Penton Film Project Relaunched!
Post by: Paul Danik on November 27, 2012, 08:22:57 PM
Sure is rare, it used to belong to Malclom Smiths girlfriend :)

All kidding aside, it is a Penton Steel Tanker, that in itself makes it a relatively rare machine.  In general terms it would be considered an early 1969 model, although Penton did not have definitive yearly models, it has the early cast iron cylinder and a number of other items that were found on the earlier machines, as well as not having some later model gussets and brackets. You will start to get your Steel Tanker education as you fill out your Steel Tanker questionnaire that Bill Smith has put together with the help of Doug Wilford and few others.  The information gathered is being analyzed by Bill and will be made available shortly to help tell the Penton Steel Tanker story and provide guidance for folks wanting to ID their machine as well as do "correct" restorations. Thanks in advance for taking the time to fill out the questionnaire.

Hi Todd,
I would say that your Craigslist find was a good deal! It looks like you only need to find some fenders, number plates, an air box, and the correct heat shield and with a lot of TLC, repair or replacement of worn out parts you will have a valuable, not easy to replace part of off road history. You are starting out with a much more complete bike than I do usually:)Check out the vendors list on the home page for the missing parts. Oh, the stories our bikes could tell about their previous owners, the events that they were used in, and the fun that was had if only they could talk!:DBest wishes on your rebuild and film project.

In just a weeks time the John Penton documentary film pledge drive has gone from 141 Backers pledging $48,125 to 176 Backers pledging  $66,995, with a goal of  $150,000. The pledge drive is gaining momentum like a Mint 400 on an uphill powerline special test :)

If the pledges keep coming in at this rate the pledge drive will be very, very close to attaining it's $ 150,000 goal, let's make it happen.

There are still 26 days left in the pledge drive, pledges can range from $ 10.00 to $ 10,000 with no monies changing hands unless the $150,000 goal is met...making a pledge only take a few minutes, but the satisfaction of knowing that you helped to make the John Penton documentary film project a reality will last a lifetime.

Just click on this link to make your pledge.

Over Halfway There!!!!

Pog-meisters,

Yesterday we received (2), yes (2) $10,000 pledges including one from KTM USA (We love those guys!), pushing the number closing in on $78,000 with 25 days left. This is essentially like starting the last campaign with $78,000 but only having to raise $150,000 not $275,000. Great news!

We only have (1) $10,000 level left but (14) $5,000 left...If we can get to $100,000 quickly, motivating a few deep pockets will be easier along with all of us regular Joe's (which we love) with $10, $25, $50 to be part of the project.

A few other things going on:

• Getting ready to release a series (5) of short videos from the interviews with John, Jack and Dane. These are only 1-2 minutes long about a specific story that will be included in the final film. Some neat stuff you all will like. Maybe as early as the next 2-3 days. We'll release a video every few days leading up to the final days. (Need everyone to forward and promote links!)

• Looks like a couple of newspapers are getting involved in the story based on a press release we sent out. The Chronicle-Telegram for Lorain County and Amherst News are working on stories.

• We are getting ready to send specific email to over 300 KTM dealers in the USA to support the project and be able to use the final film in screenings for their local market and club/store promotion and charities

• I have people in Hollywood looking at getting the film in real theaters for at least one night or weekend

• I have approached a major cable TV network about airing the film once completed.

• I have contacted Diamond Don Rainey to use his Riverfront National in April as a backdrop to shoot some re-creation scenes of John's enduro runs because of the vast number of historic enduro bikes that will race there in his beautiful countryside. Will probably be doing more at Mid-Ohio.

When (not if) the Project on Kickstarter is successful:

1) We will be arranging to head east for a research trip, interviewing important characters and Pog members to get all the correct storylines and possible on-camera interview subjects lined up. The IMS Show in Cleveland may be the first stop for us to meet and talk to you all.

2) Once we have all the characters lined up, we will begin looking at the calendar for possible shoot trips taking into account people's schedules, weather, etc. for long travel shoots.

3) Shooting will take place in Ohio, Texas, Oregon, Idaho, Northern and Southern California and Europe. The Europe trip (maybe 2) will be a big one because we'll need to carefully schedule the trip for the KTM stories and interviews in Austria, the Alpinestars story in Italy, plus Germany, the UK, (Russia-Gennady Moiseev?) and I'm sure more that will come up. In Europe we also want to capture the european culture and look to make a strong contrast to the US side of the story.

4) We should be done shooting by the Fall with what I'm guessing could be 50-75 interviews and hundreds of hours of footage to start going through. From there, we start to  craft our final story, adding pick-up shoots, sourcing and organizing archival materials, etc.

5) The final 4-5 mos will be spent writing, editing, working with Lyle Lovett on his narration and music, etc. to have a completed movie by May-June of 2014.

6) A long ride on my Yamaha Super Tenere, some fly-fishing and a beer for the Producer..:)

But, we have to get to this January 14th finish line first and we need everyone's help to pledge (if you haven't) and push the project to others to pledge. Remember as little as $1 can be pledged!

Oh, yeah and we came up with this nice Certificate of Support below that everyone will get to hang on their wall. We'll send a PDF for people to print out.

So, everyone get out there and pledge and push on your facebook pages, emails, twitter accounts, etc.  The movie will be a great promotion or fundraising piece for local dealers and motorcycle clubs in cities all over the US and abroad and we'll make it available!

Merry Chrismas all and look for those fun videos coming up!

Best,

Todd

In the past week the pledge drive for the John Penton documentary film has gone from 176 Backers pledging $66,995, to 212 backers pledging $83,136, with 19 days left to reach the $ 150,000 goal.

If pledges keep coming in at that rate, the fund raising goal will be in sight when the white flag waves..... Please post info about this pledge drive anywhere you think it might help, we need to get this project funded and capture the John Penton story in a documentary.

I spoke with Todd this morning and we discussed how great it will be to get the Penton story told by folks like Kalman Cseh who was employed by KTM when John Penton first visited them ,and was very instrumental in the dealings between KTM and John Penton during the Penton era, and beyond. Any of you who were on hand when we had Kalman as our special guest at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum meeting a few years back know just how involved Kalman was, he gave a wonderful and very informative presentation to the assembled group at our meeting.

Be sure to watch this clip from what Todd has already gotten in the can.

Thanks Paul!

I have set a goal for us to reach or exceed $100K by Saturday, Midnight and am pounding emails and phone. (Feels like a political campaign...Hah).

Confirmed yesterday that Bob Hannah is pledging and Malcolm Smith is increasing his pledge from last time! Also reached across the pond to Europe and some web sites for Vintage Enduro and Motocross groups over there to spread the word.

Also reached out to AMA Management and AHRMA Management to get some email blasts, web banners, etc. for the next 3 weeks.

A big collector here in So. Cal will also be making a pledge and a few others I believe.

We just got to keep up the momentum!

Good morning!

I thought I would include some statistics from the Kickstarter site. The first is a graph to show the sales curve as we get close to the deadline. We had a good week and it's going in the right direction...needs to keep going...

The second is a report that Kickstarter shows WHERE the pledges are coming from, how many and what percentage they make up of the total so far.

It would be awesome to see the referrals from pentonusa.org increase. Don't know if it could but one would think with 400+ pog members it could be at the top of that report.

Remember, as little as $1 can be pledged and your name is on the list but NO AMOUNTS ARE SHOWN.

Thanks to all that have supported and spreading the word! I'm already thinking about my trip to visit the POG group at the IMS show in Cleveland to begin our research for the film.

Have a nice weekend all!

Okay, we set a goal and exceeded it with our $100K by 12/29 with $104,756. And now a new goal...$125K by end of New Year's Day, 11:59pst.

Possible? We have to try! We'll be working the phone, internet, etc. to make sure the effort is there but could use your Poggers help.

Pledge if you haven't (and can) and get others on-board. As little as $1 to get your name on the list!

I heard from Alpinestars last night and am optimistic we'll see something substantial from them to join KTM USA!

Thanks for everyone's support!

Todd,
I've been working the Facebook KTM Racing page with the project, the updates, and numerous photos.  That fan page alone represents over 906,000 likes [:p]  I also received a check from a California POG member in the amount of $100.00 made out to the Kickstart Project.  Not entirely sure on how to apply it but I'll think of something :)

Thrown,
There are a number of members who may be reluctant to establish the required Amazon account and many do not even have email.

Thanks Dale!

Yeah, I have some people that couldn't do the Amazon thing and just want to give us a check...Problem is, you have to have a separate email account for each pledge account if the person's name is to be listed.

The same Amazon account can pay for more than one pledge but to get the names listed you need a bunch of separate emails...

What could be done is, if the people don't care about being listed and just want to help, the POG could take the $100 and then INCREASE the POG pledge. You guys can keep track of those types and we will honor the rewards for those people.

I would think that most Poggers will want to purchase a DVD or download in the future anyway, and with $25 and $50 rewards, you are basically just PRE-PAYING for something you will purchase in the future.

Make sense?

Thanks for posting on the KTM page I may post something there and pay to "promote" it so all 906,000 people see it.

My wife had a Amazon acct so I did mine there but I would have rather paid by PayPal. So would a lot of others.

Thanks Dwight! Yeah, we wished KS would do PayPal too but it doesn't take too long to set up an account.

We just crested $110,000 thanks to folks like you making the effort!

312 backers, $118,151 pledged of the $150,000 goal with 12 days to go...

If my math is correct, pledges totaling $31,849.00 over the next 12 days are needed to reach the $ 150,000 goal. The final check is in sight, but we need to keep plugging away, just like in a nasty, muddy, greasy, slimy, rutted, cold, wet, winter hare scrambles :)

There is no 2nd. place in this drive / event, we either win or we lose. Please keep spreading the word to any of the individuals or groups that might help to make the John Penton documentary film a reality.

Signing up to make a pledge is very easy, I did it myself without the help of any of my grandkids, so it must be simple. A pledge is just that, a pledge, no monies exchange hands unless the goal is reached.

In this short piece, Jack Penton talks about how his siblings and others in the Ohio area became national and international caliber riders by first, learning to keep up with his dad John, and then with each other.

It is great to slowly go through the list of names of the folks who have pledged their support, they are listed at random, but the last time I looked Dwight Rudder was 2 places ahead of Bob Hannah :D.

Thanks,
Paul

Good job Paul!

Thanks to everyone who has pledged and spread the word. We got our first interested KTM dealer about hosting a screening in their market!

WE NEED MORE OF THESE!

Also, today Ricky "Bad Boy" Johnson joined his old nemesis Bob "Hurricane" Hannah and "Bad Brad" Lackey with a pledge.

Where are the off-road, woods champions? How to we reach them? Can't let the just the "moto guys" get the glory!  (I know Malcolm Smith is coming in though)

Gotta go and keep pounding the keyboard turning over rocks...

Todd

Within site of $10,000 to go!

Hi all! We are getting sooooo close!

446
backers
$139,573
pledged of $150,000 goal
5 days to go

I've already started re-reading Ed's book, talking with Paul D. on when to head to Amherst for research interviews, etc. Heck, even reached out to the Russian Motorcycle Federation on how to get ahold of Gennady Moiseev on a possible interview about winning the World Championships on a KTM.

We had a good weekend at the Anaheim Supercross meeting with Alpinestars who will make a nice pledge and KTM who has already pledged the max but wants to start thinking about ways to use the film when it's done.

If some of you are thinking "What happens if we reach the goal and there is more time left?"

Well, we keep seeking pledges because if you all remember, this is ONLY FOR PRODUCTION. or "getting it in the can" as they say in Hollywood. We still will have to post-produce the project with editing, music, graphics, etc. Usually post is about equal to production. I know we'll have some sponsors come in for 2014 but every little bit helps!

Keep pledging Poggers and spreading the word!

As little as $1 gets your name on the list!

Thx!

That is awesome news...:D

You know reaching the $ 150,000 goal sure is impressive, but to me seeing that 480 folks came together to pledge their support of the John Penton documentry film speaks volumes of the love and support that each pledger has for the Penton family, motorcycle, and of course for John Penton. And all well earned I must say:)

Job well done to all.

Dale,

This is better than wakin' up by having se-....errr....my bad...Sorry!

WE'RE THERE!!!!!

What a nice surprise this morning and thanks to everyone who pledged and spread the word! I thought I would include "the graph" for everyone for posterity sakes!

Big thanks to Alpinestars and the the Mazzarolo Family for putting us over the top! And of course Acerbis joined KTM USA this week for a unified support from the industry!

Though we are doing a little happy dance over in "Cali" right now, we'll be hard at it to make sure the next 3+ days are productive with building on this momentum.

Remember, all this campaign was to get the movie shot or "in the can" as they say in the biz. We'll still have needs for "post-production" which is months of editing, graphics, music, mixing, archive handling, etc. Soooo...every little bit helps.

I know of some big chunks still to come in.

But for now, let's relax a minute enjoy that we will begin working on this FOR SURE and keep plugging!

Hey maybe we should set a new goal for 500 backers! or how bout 750?

:)

Thanks again Poggers!

Hi All!

Success! Thanks to all the Poggers and the rest of the 562 backers of the film project! We look forward to getting started and meeting some of you guys.

As we get into this we'll posting occasionally on updates and news.

I would like to put out there that we will be needing all kinds of Penton photos, (old), home movies, vhs copies of home movies, race coverage, articles, stories, ads, etc, etc. as we get into this. Please, as you find things, put them in a place that when we might need stuff they are easily accessible.

You guys can't fathom how much archival materials will need for this movie. Hundreds of photographs...hundreds.

Thank you so much again and we will stay in touch!

Best,

Todd

How do the folks who are just now hearing of this project donate. Can that be done through Kickstarter or is there some other way of taking donations.

Al,

Good morning! We have had several requests for people who still want to contribute and we'll be setting up a method for those who want to contribute and receive the same rewards as the Kickstarter backers. The Kickstarter process is a limited time thing by design and we can't go back through there.

We'll keep ya posted.

For now, you can send a check made out to:

Pipeline Digital Media
406 E. Commonwealth Ave. Unit 1
Fullerton, CA 92832

Attn: John Penton Story

Include "John Penton Story" in your reference area of your check.

We will keep track of you and others to send the rewards to based on your check amount,

Thank you for your support.

Best,

Todd
